 Hi Tom,

 To answer your questions:

 Yes, CF is ideal for this project. It's pretty easy to learn, particularly
 if you are familiar with the tag based syntax of HTML. It has a lot of
 functionality 'out of the box', and it's syntax is pretty intuitive.

 You can happily have plain HTML pages and CF pages in the same site.

 You can happily use drop down menus, javascript, infact anything else you
 can put on a webpage and CF at the same time. You could use CF to
 dynamically build your drop down menus on page load for example.

 I've not used Cartweaver, so I can't comment on that specifically, but there
 are a wealth of options for CF based shopping carts.

 You've found a great resource here in the mailing list. Check the Adobe
 developers centre at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/coldfusion/ for a load of
 tutorials, and of course the massive number of communtity sites and blogs
 out there.

 Hope that helps.

 Subject: switching to coldfusion

 Hi

 I recently set up an HTML site using Dreamweaver 8 on a MAC which now needs
 to be converted into an ecommerce site. My background is in graphic design
 (therefore I'm still fairly new to Dreamweaver and
 HTML) and we've slightly ground to a halt and need some advice on which way
 to go next.

 Having trawled through various shopping cart software, we've decided that
 flexibility/customizability is key and therefore opted against a more
 template driven option (hosted cart solutions which all seem quite rigid).
 We've been looking at the software 'Cartweaver' (seems like one of the
 better ones) which gives 3 software options: ASP, Coldfusion or PHP. Having
 read a bit about them I'm leaning towards Coldfusion as they claim it is
 written specifically to ease the learning curve and development time of
 creating dynamic web applications and also because it is a tag-based
 language like HTML.

 Few QUESTIONS really:

 In the opinion of an experienced web developer/programmer, is Coldfusion the
 way to go with this project. Is it really as straight forward as the
 software guys claim it is or is there a chance I will be biting off more
 than I can chew (being of limited experience)?

 Can I keep the existing HTML pages as they are or do I need to re-create
 them in Coldfusion?

 My client is very keen to use drop down menus as an easy means of searching
 through the different product categories. Initially I was looking to create
 these using Fireworks (Javascript) which seemed relatively painless... Is
 this still an option if we opt to go with Coldfusion?

 Any advice hugely appreciated especially on software recommendations and
 decent learning resources.

 Thanks

 Tom

Re: JRun Connector Protocol Error

2007-04-29 Thread Gil Carroll
I also had this issue, with CF 702 and XP Pro, upgrading from CF6. I tried all
the blogs and nothing worked. I reinstalled several times. Nothing. Finally, I
removed CF and IIS and reinstalled them both and it works now.

This is the error I got when trying to upgrade my production Win
2000/IIS server from CF 6 to CF 7:

JRun Connector Protocol Error

I did some googling and tried the applicable suggestions to no avail.
Here's what I tried:
*Make sure all Extension Mappings point to the correct jrun.dll file
*Check the Cache ISAPI Applications setting.
*Restart Services
*Reboot computer
*Change permissions on wsconfig directory (set everyone to full control)

The install log does show 1 NonFatal error, not sure if it is related:
ANT Script Error:
  Status: ERROR
  Additional Notes: ERROR -
configure-dlls.xmlFailed to copy D:\CFusionMX7\lib\cfperfmon_mx.dll to
C:\WINNT\system32\cfperfmon_mx.dll due to
C:\WINNT\system32\cfperfmon_mx.dll (The process cannot access the file
because it is being used by another process)

The jrun log has this message:
2006-10-24 06:41:56 jrISAPI[filter:1884]  Couldn't initialize from
remote server, JRun server(s) probably down.
2006-10-24 06:41:56 jrISAPI[filter:1884]  could not initialize proxy
for 127.0.0.1:51011

This is a dedicated server at CFX Hosting.

After a couple of install attempts, I reverted back to CF 6.
Any ideas on what else to try?

Thanks,

Re: Which Framework do you use... (if any)

2007-04-29 Thread Barney Boisvert
The best tool for the job depends both on the job that you need to do
and your experience/skill. If you need to pound some nails, a
standard hammer will likely be the best tool for the job, and it's an
easy one to learn how to use. But if you need to pound a LOT of
nails, an air-hammer is probably a better choice. It's far more
expensive, a bit harder to use, and certainly more dangerous, but a
lot faster when you have a lot of nails.

The same applies to development frameworks. Different projects and
different developers will different needs and skills, and therefore
the best framework will likely differ as well.

can go with said air-hammer but surely some air-hammers are better than

The framework question is more the general hammer metaphor. All the
frameworks are like different types of hammers for different jobs, not
just different types of air-hammers.

PDF subscribers receive only the PDFs.
Individual issue subscribers receive either the PDF or the print issue,

To cache or not to cache...

2007-04-29 Thread Mike | NZSolutions Ltd
Hi guys,

I am working on an application to list properties. Just wanted some
opinions...

Am I better to create a stored procedure of all listings (the aim is to have
quite a few), then use a query of queries to get relevant listings eg.
feature/general/classfieds

Or am I better to use a standard query to get all listings - cache it using
cachedwithin and use a query of queries each time?

Or am I right off the track - lol!

Regards
Mike

Subject: To cache or not to cache...

Regards
Mike

RE: request timeout

2007-04-29 Thread Dave Watts
 does anyone know how to DYNAMICALLY extend the timeout in
 CFSETTNG for a long data carry by using CFHTTP? say, it takes
 10min - or up to 90min sometime.

You can use the TIMEOUT attribute of CFHTTP to override the normal timeout
of a CFHTTP request, but you will also need to override the timeout of your
page itself using CFSETTING.

But honestly, if it takes ninety minutes to fetch something using CFHTTP,
you probably shouldn't do that. Use something else (like wget) to fetch
files for you if they take that long.

client side and server side validation

2007-04-29 Thread Pete

I want to check on exactly how this should be done.

I have a program and I wish to check as to whether it is being done
correctly.

Baically I have the following in the page:

script language=JavaScript type=text/javascript

function validateFields() {

if
(document.virtucalconsultation.vctitle.value == ) {

alert('Please enter your
title!');

document.virtucalconsultation.vctitle.focus();

return false;

}

return true;

}

/script

Also on the page I have

  form name=virtucalconsultation
action=virtual-consultation_include1.cfm method=post  onsubmit=return
validateFields(this);

  input type=hidden name=vctitle_required value=Your title
is required - please enter your title

And then I have:

tr

  td width=50% class=subHeader align=rightdiv
style=margin: 10px;Title/div/td

  td width=50%div style=margin: 10px;

input class=searchform

type=text

name=vctitle

width=10

maxlength=25

message=Title must be
entered

validateat=onsubmit

  /div/td

/tr

Would appreciate any feedback

I can show the program if required.

Thanks in advance.

Application.cfm (part of the pre-CF7 built-in application framework).
Short of that, Application.cfc with a private method that gets invoked
onRequestStart. This is inferior, I think, but necessary if you need
some of the other Application.cfc hooks (like onSessionEnd).

And let the flame-war begin ;)

Where you have...

remove that and put this on the submit button for the form.

script language=JavaScript type=text/javascript
function validateFields()
{
if (document.virtucalconsultation.vctitle.value == )
{
alert('Please enter your title!');
document.virtucalconsultation.vctitle.focus();
return false;

else

/script

form name=virtucalconsultation action=virtual-consultation_include1.cfm
method=post /
input class=searchform type=text name=vctitle maxlength=25 /

How can I make cfquery stop removing leading 0's??

I think a few fairly high profile people have talked publicly about
using several frameworks. I don't think any real research would

a given set of frameworks and stick with them. Sure, there are always
going to be a few switchers but those really are the outliers in the
community. I know a lot of hardcore Fuseboxers using FB3, for example,
and also a lot of Model-Glue folks using MG1.x. You can hardly accuse
them of fleeting between frameworks!

 There must be one which

Like Dave Watts I'll ask why?... different frameworks suit different
people and different projects. It's not a decision anyone can - or
should - make for you. I liked Zaphods comment about the Accord -
very applicable here.

Ask this question on the FB forums and they'll probably tell you
Fusebox is the answer. Ask it on the MG forums and they'll tell you
Model-Glue. Ask it on the M2 forums and they'll tell you Mach II.

 Which one has the most backing?

Hard to say - they all have active communities and mailing lists.

 The most long-term vision and lifecycle?

Again, hard to say. Most of the frameworks' teams have an idea about
the next two or three releases.
