Re: Is running CF on J2EE server more stable?

Hi Guy.

Ok, thanks for all the information, I think I understand that now. I will
have a play around with the JRun J2EE configuration on a test box and see
how it pans out. In the past I have only run CFMX in server configuration
with Apache.

Regards,

Andrew.

Problem with Java object calls

2006-04-11 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi.

I having a problem with a Java object call. It appears that the CF server
does not create the objects exclusively when more than one instance of the
same script is running. I have created a java class to do multi-threaded XML
post to a web service. The java class works fine and everything is great if
you only call the script once. If you call it more that once at the same
time it appears that a new instance is the same as the other instance. Here
is a code segment of how I'm creating the object.

cfscript
obj_PostXML = CreateObject('java', 'MultiThreadedXMLPost').init();
obj_PostXML.executePost(arr_Arguments);
while(obj_PostXML.completedCount LT 2) {}
str_output = obj_PostXML.theData;
/cfscript
cfdump var=#str_output#

Is there anyway to make it exclusive?

Kind regards,

Andrew.

Multithreading within a request

2006-04-06 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi All.

Is it possible to multithread within a single request. For example, I would
like to make multiple http requests to a web service, but at the moment they
run one after the other, taken about 3 seconds each, but if I could run them
both at the same time it would improve the performance of the script
greatly, any ideas on how this could be done?

Kind regards,

Re: Possible Bug: XML Dot Notation

2005-12-22 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi.

Ok, I have found the bug and know what is it. When I was doing the XMLParse
I set the case sensitive attribute to true:

cfset responseData = XMLParse(cfhttp.filecontent, true)

However, even through the case in the cfoutput string is perfect CF throws
an error from the dot notation say the object doesn't exist. Remove the case
sensitive true from the XMLParse, or in the case of the example given by
BSterner, don't added it to the CFXML tag and everything works fine.

This is therefore a bug.

Best Regards

Andrew

Character set conversion

Hi All.

I have a XML string receive from a web service and the string is UTF-16

or can you get the XML Parser to accept UTF-16?

Possible Bug: XML Dot Notation

2005-12-21 Thread Andrew Dixon
 Hi All.

Now, maybe I'm getting this completely wrong but I think there is a bug when
using dot notation with an XML object in both CF6.1 and 7. The XML structure
I have has come from a web service via http using CFHTTP and this an
example:

PkgRS xmlns=http://www.test.com/test; http://www.test.com/testxmlns:xsi=
http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instanceTarget=test
xsi:type=test
SyndicatorInfo SyndicatorId=test/
SessionInfo SessionId=iPQ-J9ikYq39hn89J_puDZEn CreateNewSession=true/
SearchResponse Success=true ModifiedRequest=false
ViewInfo Offset=0 Length=50/
ResultSetInfo SortCode=cost SortAscending=true MaxItems=100
NumItems=1/
PackageHolidays
PackageHoliday ItineraryId=si1003 Supplier=EZJ Country=GB
NumberOfNights=8 LeadInPricePerPassenger=29.98 FlightOnly=true
OneWayOnly=false BookableByFAB=true Currency=GBP BookingChannel=WEB
Flight OriginAirport=LGW DestinationAirport=BFS
DepartureDate=20060202 DepartureTime=0700 ReturnHomeDate=20060210
ReturnHomeTime=2250 ReturnHomeDepartDate=20060210
ReturnHomeDepartTime=2125 ArrivalDate=20060202 ArrivalTime=0830
OutboundFlightNumber=EZY731 ReturnFlightNumber=EZY742
OutboundFlightBasePrice=9.99 ReturnFlightBasePrice=9.99/
/PackageHoliday
/PackageHolidays
/SearchResponse
/PkgRS

If I then try to output the value of the XML Attribute
LeadInPricePerPassenger which is located with the PackageHoliday element
using dot notation I get an error:

cfoutput#responseData.PkgRS.SearchResponse.PackageHolidays.PackageHoliday[1].XmlAttributes.LeadInPricePerPassenger#/cfoutput

Error:

Element PKGRS.SEARCHRESPONSE.PACKAGEHOLIDAYS.PACKAGEHOLIDAY is undefined in
RESPONSEDATA.

However if I output it using associative array (bracket) notation it works
without issue:

cfoutput#responseData[PkgRS][SearchResponse][PackageHolidays][PackageHoliday][1][XmlAttributes][LeadInPricePerPassenger]#/cfoutput

29.98

According the Developing ColdFusion MX Applications documentation from MM
you can:

quote

Similarly, you can use either, or a combination of both, of the following
notation methods:
• Structure (dot) notation, such as mydoc.employee
• Associative array (bracket) notation, such as mydoc[employee]

I have tried the same code on MX6.1 and 7 and get the same error. Am I doing
something completely wrong or is this a CF bug?

Best Regards

Andrew

Problem with CFHTTP

2005-01-21 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi All.

Not sure if anyone else has ever come across this, but we have a site
that uses an external XML feed to provide it with data. We access this
feed using CFHTTP which work fine, however sometimes the provider take
a while to response, 10 - 20 seconds, and when this happens CFHTTP
eats cpu time like crazy. Which then has an impact on are data parsing
time, particular when there are multiple instants of CFHTTP waiting
for a reply while overs are trying to process returned data.

Has anyone else ever come across this problem, or any ideas how to fix it?

Writing a C++ CFX tag for Linux

2005-01-17 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi All.

I need to write a C++ CFX tag for Linux and I've not done one before,
so I thought I would start with a simply Hello World application.
Here the code in the my C++ file...

// Include Standard Librarys (not if they are needed at this point)
#include stdio.h
#include string.h
#include stdlib.h

#include cfx.h// CFX Custom Tag API

// Constants
#define TAG_ERROR_HEADERError occurred in Test tag

extern C
void ProcessTagRequest( CCFXRequest* pRequest )
{
try
{
pRequest-Write( Hello World );
}

// Catch Cold Fusion exceptions re-raise them
catch( CCFXException* e )
{
pRequest-ReThrowException( e ) ;
}

// Catch ALL other exceptions and throw them as
// Cold Fusion exceptions (DO NOT REMOVE! --
// this prevents the server from crashing in
// case of an unexpected exception)
catch( ... )
{
pRequest-ThrowException(
TAG_ERROR_HEADER,
Unexpected error occurred while processing tag. ) ;
}
}

I then compiled this using the following Makefile:

INCLUDE = -I /opt/coldfusionmx/cfx/include
CXX = g++
LD = g++

SRC = request.cc
OBJ = request.o

test.so:$(OBJ)
$(LD) -shared -o test.so $(OBJ)

request.o: request.cc
$(CXX) $(INCLUDE) -c request.cc

clean:
rm -f test.so $(OBJ)

This all compiled ok and create a test.so file. I registered this via
CF Admin as CFX_test and then create a create a script to call
CFX_test:

CFX_test

I then called this script via the browser and all I get is a blank
page. I had asssumed I would see Hello World in the browser, but
nothing. There are no error messages either when compiling,
registering or running the script. Can anyone help point me in the
right direction as I guess I'm doing something completely wrong
somewhere along the way.

Best Regards

Andrew.

Re: XML Variable Issue

2005-01-17 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi.

If you are using it like that you need to .XmlText on the end to get
the XmlText part of the XmlNode.

Config.SiteConfig.SiteSections.UserManager.XmlText

And as it is text and not a boolean value I think you will need to use:

 cfif Config.SiteConfig.SiteSections.UserManager.XmlText IS TRUE

Regular Expression (searching from the end)

2005-01-12 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

I need to find the last occurance of a character in a string. Is there
a way I can use a regular expression to search the string from the end
backwards for the character? Or is there another way I can do it using
a CF function. At the moment I have a conditional loop that uses the
Find() function to search until it returns 0 and then report the
previous value as the last occurance. This works fine, but I feel
there should be a better way.

Thanks

Using XML

2005-01-11 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

We have a busy website that uses a third party XML feed. Basically
what happens is:

1) The visitor completes a form specifying their criteria.
2) A request is sent to the third party for results matching the criteria.
3) The third party response with and XML results feed.

The returned XML contains many elements with elements within them that
also contain multiple sub elements and one of the sub elements also
contains multiple sub elements. For example:

data
   elements
   element
   value11/value1
   value22/value2
   subelements
   subelement
value14/value1
value24/value2
   /subelement
   subelement
value14/value1
value24/value2
   subelement
   /subelements
   anothersubelements
   anothersubelement
value14/value1
value24/value2
   /anothersubelement
   anothersubelement
value14/value1
value24/value2
   anothersubelement
   /anothersubelements
   element
   element
   value11/value1
   value22/value2
   element
   /elements
/data

Personally I think the XML format is messy, but that is out of my
control. At the moment to parse the data into a query so I can create
a results page from I'm doing CFLOOP's within CFLOOP's starting by
looping over each 'element' inside the 'elements' structure and then
working inwards to the 'subelements' and 'anothersubelements' and also
the 'subsubelements' (not show above).

Is this the only way to do this, or is there a better way? This way is
very slow during busy times, but during quite times this is ok. Also
this way is also affected but the number of returned results. The more
results the more loops and therefore the longer it takes.

Thanks in advanced.

Andrew.

Re: File Where DSNs are stored?

They are stored in the neo-query.xml file in the lib directory in the
CF root. You can copy it over if none of the settings need changing.

The query is created by converting an XML data feed from an external
web-service. So there is no way to change it further up the chain as
such. Anyway the work around I'm using is working very well.

Re: QofQ: SELECT DISTINCT

2004-12-31 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Ryan.

That custom tag is no help as I need to DISTINCT on three columns. As
a work around for the moment, I'm creating a table in the mySQL
datasource and then populating it, doing the select and then deleting
the table and it is about 100 times (really) quicker. The QofQ takes
about 2 seconds and the work around takes about 0.02 seconds, which
just seems silly as it is doing so much more work.

Andrew.

QofQ: SELECT DISTINCT

2004-12-30 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi All.

I have some code that does a SELECT DISTINCT on a QofQ and it is
really slow. For example, I have a dataset with about 150 records and
the SELECT DISINCT is taking anything from 2 - 5 seconds to excute.

Any ideas why and how to improve it?

QofQ Problem: Sorting on columns of type java.sql.Types.NULL is not supported.

2004-12-23 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi All.

I have a problem with a Query of a Query. The error I'm getting is:

Query Of Queries runtime error.
Sorting on columns of type java.sql.Types.NULL is not supported.

The code is:

cfquery name=qry_accommodationData dbtype=query
SELECT   *
FROM   qry_accommodationData
ORDER BY #orderBy#, AdultPrice
/cfquery

Most of the time this works fine, but every now and again it gets a
dataset that it has this problem with. I have compared the first row
of a good dataset with the first row of bad dataset and they appear to
be pretty much same, apart from slightly different values. As far as
I'm aware CF uses the first row of the dataset to set the data types
and in both the good and bad datasets none of the columns in the first
have null values.

Anyone got any ideas?

Andrew.

Using a J2EE Application Server

I'm looking for a little bit of information. In what case would you
use CFMX on a J2EE platform? We current have a server using CFMX
Apache on RedHat. What does using the J2EE platform give me and do the
J2EE replace Apache as the webserver or do you still need that?

Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

 The server is Dual Xeon 2Ghz with 4Gb RAM and 80Gb IDE Hard Drive. The

 As far as the comment that was made to you it seems like they are confusing
 J2EE and Apache. Yes you could have CF ride on top of Apache however I don't
 think you can serve it on top of that. I don't think there are connectors
 available to do so. (I did a quick look up for Tomcat, JBoss, Weblogic, or

 I definitely think that if you wanted to do anything on J2EE server I'd
 recommend using JSPs and Servlets.

Re: UK Dedicated Hosting Recomendations?

2004-11-19 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Dan.

We are UK based, but use a US based hosting company (ev1servers.net)
as all UK based hosting companies are a rip-off in comparsion, and it
really doesn't matter where the servers are. EV1 has 24 hour 365 day
support so it doesn't matter if you have a problem when it is 3am in
the US as there is always someone there. Their prices are excellent
and you get loads of bandwidth included (which no UK based provided
tend to do).

Also, we found the three UK providered we used in the past (Virtual
Internet (the worst of the worst), Host Europe and OneAndOne) didn't
provide anywhere near the level of customer service or reliability of
connection that was required.

Best Regards

Andrew.

Re: What does this error mean?

2004-11-19 Thread Andrew Dixon
This is something to do with the RDS server service I believe. The
file doesn't actually exist (at least not on 6.1, even if you have RDS
enabled) but it is referred to in the web.xml configuration file.
Don't think it is anything to wrong about, but it could be someone
probing your machine to see if the RDS service is running.

QofQ Problem

2004-11-18 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

I have a strange QofQ problem. The error message I'm getting is:

USA must be interprettable as a valid number in the current locale.

The column that contains the word USA is a column that contains both
letters and numbers, for example:

10902
10909
USA
HPH
NO2H32

It appears to be something to do with certain data sets are other with
similar data work ok. The original data comes from an XML data feed
that I have transformed into a query and that wish to extract only
some of the data from using a QofQ.

Has anyone else come across that problem??? If so have you got a fix?

BTW, using CFMX6.1 + updater.

Best Regards

Andrew.

Hi Pascal

Thanks for that, inserting the dummy record works. Can I extract the

certain records, is there a CF function to do this?

Andrew.

 If you want to use QofQ, you can insert a bogus record on top with the
 correct data types in it. Just see that you don't extract it.

Re: writing to xml woes

2004-11-13 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Dave.

Ignore the error message, it is not reporting the problem correctly,
it simply means that you have an illegal character somewhere in the
XML. Looking at your code I would say it is the qevents.startDate and
.endDate are they problem contain slashes which would not be allowed.
Try replacing them with - signs like you have the events tag.

Andrew.

Application Variables

2004-11-09 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone

I have an application that is storing information in applications
variables. I need each of this variables to be available for about 1
hour . I have created a application.cfm file with a CFAPPLICATION tag
as follows:

cfapplication  name=theWebSite
applicationTimeout=#CreateTimeSpan(0,1,0,0)#

Will this automatically remove variables after the timeout time if
they are not re-wrote, or will they stay there until the whole
application is not used by anyone for 1 hour?

Thanks

Andrew.

POST HTTP/1.1

Any ideas how I get the other bit into this string?

Out of Memory

2004-10-22 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

We noticed that our CF server service restarted itself twice today,
and then after checking the cfserver.log file, just before the start
up is logged it had the following:

out of memory
autorestart: Restarting process

The server has 1Gb RAM and the JVM setting under CF Admin are set to:

Minimum JVM Heap Size (MB): 512
Maximum JVM Heap Size (MB): 512

Does this error message mean that CF needed more than 512Mb, i.e. we
need to increase the value? or is there something else wrong?

Best Regards

I have the same problem as this and already have the setting -Xms512m

only started with the install of CFMX6.1 Updater. Do you have the

 Actually, I think that the problem doesn't have anything to do with your
 code. I was at a client's site yesterday, and they had the same log errors.
 Their site was crashing frequently, and I think that they were having
 problems with the JVM running out of memory. So, you might want to look into
 that.

 If you are running on top of an app server and you are getting the

 Hi Everyone.

 We noticed that our CF server service restarted itself twice today, and then
 after checking the cfserver.log file, just before the start up is logged it
 had the following:

 out of memory
 autorestart: Restarting process

 The server has 1Gb RAM and the JVM setting under CF Admin are set to:

 Minimum JVM Heap Size (MB): 512
 Maximum JVM Heap Size (MB): 512

 Does this error message mean that CF needed more than 512Mb, i.e. we need to
 increase the value? or is there something else wrong?

 Best Regards

 Andrew.

OT: Field Naming

2004-10-19 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

I'm just starting a major project for a government client and the
first job is to design the database. Is there any recongnised
convention on the naming of database fields. In the past I have always
named them [table_name_field_name] for example: projects_id where the
table is called 'projects' and the field is called 'id'.

Thanks in advanced.

Best Regards

Re: OT: Field Naming

After a quick search on Google I found this:

http://www.ss64.com/orasyntax/naming.html

Which seems like a good little guide. It mentions an ISO standard
(ISO11157) but I had a quick look at this and this appears to be a
more general standard for data type naming.

 None that I know of, but what I do is use plural in general for the
 table names, e.g. categories, posts. After all, we are talking about
 sets here, and it's natural to pluralise them.

 Fields I give the singular form to, so the projects would have a field
 called project_id. The reasoning being that whereas the set contains
 many projects, hence the pluralisation, each tuple refers to just one,
 so it's singular.

 Also, ensure that your CFHTTP calls have timeouts sent lower or equal to the
 timeout set in the CFIDE as setting it above can cause MX to crash/100% CPU.
 It is always best to have a timeout= rather than no timeout as MX will
 wait indefinitely for the page to complete and override the CFIDE and can
 cause 100% CPU.

Relocate but include form fields

2004-10-06 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

I have been given some code by a online payment system company to show
how I redirect someone to there site. The way they have done I have to
include a list of form fields in a form and submit that form a CF
script on my server and that then does some encrpyting of the data and
then redirects to their server. However, I'm not happy with the way it
does the redirect as it requires _javascript_, and as I know from
experiance some people turn _javascript_ off for 'security reasons' and
the like. Here is the their example code:

cfoutput
FORM action="" method=post id=form1 name=Test
 input type=hidden name=VPSProtocol value=2.20
 input type=hidden name=TxType value=PAYMENT
 input type=hidden name=Vendor value=#VendorName#
 input type=hidden name=Crypt value=#Crypt#
/FORM
/cfoutput
script language=_javascript_ type=text/_javascript_
document.Test.submit();
/script

Personally I think this is terrible, so my question is how do I do the
same redirect in CF? Surely I can it some how?

Thanks

Andrew.

CFMX6.1 Updater on Windows 2k. I get exactly the same as you describe using
 your code. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all blow up...

Interestingly though, if I set the day to Tues everything works... Wed
 breaks but Wedn works... Thur works...

Interesting... I guess a Left(dayname, 4) should fix it for you :)

Re: How does CF Mail Server Work?

2004-09-26 Thread Andrew Dixon
AOL do a reserve lookup on the server so you need to have a PTR record
set up for your mail server, otherwise they will reject it. This is
how we fixed our problem with sending stuff to AOL.

Subject: How does CF Mail Server Work?
To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My site sends a fairly large number of emails on a daily basis.In addition
 to newsletters that are sent to subscribers there are notifications of a
 variety of types (message board, requests for info, registrations, etc)

 As the newsletter subscriber list grows I am trying to manage it better by
 unsubscribing users that have email addresses that are no longer valid.I
 have written a script that reads bounced messages, finds the email address,
 matches it against certain tables and takes the appropriate action.This
 part works ok.But I am noticing that all AOL users and large groups of
 other domains are all rejected.The bounced message doesn't say why.Just
 that delivery failed.

 When I send an email via my personal account to an address (AOL) that was
 rejected when it came from the web site it appears to be received ok.The
 two email addresses I am sending from have the same domain so I don't think
 that that whole domain or IP has been blacklisted.

 Also, in the event viewer I see errors like Could not connect to domain
 xxx.com which I don't understand.

 System is Win2000, CFMX 6.1 Enterprise using Windows mail server.

 I realize this question is vague but the gist is this:What is mail server
 doing that needs to connect to a domain in order to delivery an email?
 Could this be what is causing some mails to be rejected?Could a specific
 address be blocked (note:messages that are bounced because of suspected
 spam have a different message) ?

 Thanks.

Hot-fixes

2004-09-24 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

I have been speaking someone at Macromedia about getting a mailing
list set up to alert users about Hot-fixes, and the reason that was
given for not have a list was, and I quote:

With hotfixes, we recommend that you install them only if you need
them. Unlike security bulletins, we expect people to look for a hotfix
to solve a specific problem - not to install every hotfix.

Personally I think this sounds very strange as bug fix is a bug fix
whether you need it or not. Ok I agree that unless you are suffering
from the problem caused by the bug, you are not going to benefit from
the fix straight away, but surely it is still better to have the fix
installed and the bug removed than leave the bug there only to fall
over it some time down the line.

What does everyone else think?

Re: javascript check?

Try setting a cookie using JS then reading that cookie. If you can read
it JS is on, if not JS is off.

But if they have a cookie switched off or a firewall that blocks them
then this will not work. _javascript_ might be on but cookie off. This
is what I use:

In the head tag add this:

script type=text/_javascript_
self.location=/index.cfm?jsenabled=1;
/script
meta http-equiv=refresh content=1;url="">

Then in you code check the value of the jsenabled url variable.

 What makes you think the hotfix has no bugs of its own?

 If something works satisfactorily, you may be better off leaving it as it
 is. Hotfixes address specific problems, but they potentially introduce new
 unknown problems. The best example I can think of is with the database
 drivers. There were all sorts of problems with the database drivers shipped
 with CFMX 6.1, but there are also problems with the newer drivers. For most
 people I've dealt with, the new problems are less serious than the old ones,
 but it hasn't been that way for everyone.

 Granted, some of the hotfixes are very simple, and unlikely to have bugs,
 but this is something you'd want to evaluate on a case-by-case basis.

Re: Converting query to comma separated list

2004-09-23 Thread Andrew Dixon
Why don't you just CFLOOP over the query? You don't need to convert
the query to a comma list to loop over it...

Subject: Converting query to comma separated list
To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My first question, though I suspect this might not be the best
approach . Is it possible to turn a query (cfdirectory in this case)
into a comma separated list?

 The reason I ask is bcos currently I have a hardcoded list of folders
in my action file, and I loop through and pull all the files from
each. Like so...

 cfloop
index = thisItem
list = maps,districtPlans,mgmtPlans

 cfdirectory
name=getAllFiles
action="">
directory=#serverdir##thisItem#
sort=name ASC

 cfquery dbtype=query name=getAllFiles_#thisItem#
SELECT *
FROM getAllFiles
 /cfquery

 /cfloop

 and in the display page something like...
 ol
 cfoutput query=getAllFiles_maps
 #replace(listFirst(name), _,  , ALL)#br /
 /cfoutput
 /ol
 ol
 cfoutput query=getAllFiles_mgmtPlans
 #replace(listFirst(name), _,  , ALL)#br /
 /cfoutput
 /ol etc etc

 This is all working fine. BUT, instead of hardcoding the list, I can
do another directory call like so...

 cfdirectory
 name=getAllFolders
 action="">
 directory=#serverdir#
 sort=name ASC

 which will give me all the folders that are in the above list (ie
maps,districtPlans etc). So, how to get the query to a list so I don't
need to hardcode? OR, is this the wrong approach and is it possible to
use the getAllFolders query directly in some fashion?

 TIA

That look like what I was thinking of. Just make sure that if you are
using an older version of CF (CF4/5 I think) that CFDIRECTORY returned
the . and .. directories, but CFMX doesn't do this. As you say it
works I'm guess you are on CFMX.

Thank you for the swift replies Andrew and Kola,
 and you're right Andrew. I'd already tried something similar, but was making
 it more complicated than necessary. Here's what works

 cfdirectory

directory=#serverdir#
sort=name ASC

 cfloop query = getAllFolders

 cfdirectory
name=getAllFiles
action="">
directory=#serverdir##name#
sort=name ASC

 cfquery dbtype=query name=getAllFiles_#name#
SELECT *
FROM getAllFiles
 /cfquery

 /cfloop

Im trapping a few errors per day which means probably 1-1000 users (or

 Basically if I look at the cgi.query_string it shows

 fuseaction=DisplayNewsamp;ContextID=MSAamp;ID=4324amp;GBT=Main

 vs. what it should be

 fuseaction=DisplayNewsContextID=MSAID=4324GBT=Main

 What would be placing amp; in my URL strings? I simulated the exact steps
 as the user but did not throw an error message. We are both clicking the
 link from same version of lotus notes, launching the same version internet

 setting in the broswer or on the computer, unrelated to the application
 itself. Any insight would be appreciated.

Re: CFCONTENT

2004-09-21 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi.

I believe, but I might be wrong, that it simply changes the HTTP
Header to make the returned CF page appear to be an attached file

neither is the actually location of the file.

Subject: CFCONTENT
To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm looking to use CFCONTENT to provide the various files on my
 website as I am finding hotlinking a bit of a problem at the moment
 and want to stop it.

 I'm hosting on a Windows 2000 Server with IIS5 and CFMX (6.1) and plan
 on using CFCONTENT to check the referring page to make sure it came
 from my own site, the implementation of the code is not a problem, I
 know how I'm going to do that, however my questions concerns how the
 CFCONTENT tag actually works at a low level.
 The files I have on my site vary from 0.5MB to 20 or 30MB so I want to
 be able to estimate what kind of extra overhead I will create when I
 have 20 to 30 files being downloaded at any one time.

 Can anyone explain how the tag works?
 Does the tag create a temp file and tell IIS to return that file?
 (creating more drive access overhead and longer CF execution time)
 is the data to be returned piped to IIS instead? (creating memory
 usage overhead and longer CF execution time)
 or, does CF point IIS to the file that I want returned? (which should
 be the same resource wise as just directly linking to the file in the
 first place)

 Any help on this would be very useful.

 I had looked at Apache as an option for the server to use the
 .htaccess files to prevent hotlinking, however the server also needs
 to run several ASP applications which I've had difficulty getting
 going under Apache.
 Of course if anyone knows of another way to prevent hotlinking, I
 would be grateful to hear it :)

 thanks in advance,
 Stevie

Re: Daily Server re-start with MX 6.1

That is probably why then. There is a problem with CFMX on Windows
2003 where the server service crashes and restarts itself at random.
It happens on our 2003 server about 1 - 3 times a day and there
appears to be nothing you can do about it. See the following CF Forum
post.

http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=2threadid=785970

Although someone marked my post as the answer, it only helps reduce
the frequency of the problem and doesn't get rid of it all together.

Sorry it doesn't really help.

Hi Paul.

You may just simply have not noticed as the server does recover
itself. Open up the 'Event Viewer' under 'Administrative Tools' and
look in the application log and see if there are any entries with the
'Source' of 'Application Error'. If there is open up the details for
that event and see if it says:

Faulting application jrun.exe, version 4.0.3.10455, faulting module
jvm.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00156e55.

If it does then you have the problem as well. Our last entry was today
at 16:38 GMT and prior to that was yesterday at 23:18 GMT. It appears
to be completely random, but if you don't have the problem that I
would consider yourself very lucky as I know many people with this
problem.

Re: cffile write question, sending but not parsing cf code

2004-09-15 Thread Andrew Dixon
Not sure I have understood this right, but I assume the file you are
trying create a CF Script, but remove the database call. In that case,
you can put all your bits of script into a variable and than right
that variable. The script will not be processed by CFFILE, for
example:

cfset pageString = this is some content
cfset pageString = #pageString# cfset a = 1
cffile action="" file=/stories/2004-1234.cfm output=#pageString

This will create the CF script and when called the CF parts will be processed.

Subject: cffile write question, sending but not parsing cf code
To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm using cffile to allow a magazine site to publish articles and not have a
 db call everytime an article is selected. Is there anyway (aside from
 includes) that I can use send up cf code such as CGI.path_info without it
 being parsed when the cffile is being written?

 Example:

 For example /admin/createFile.cfm creates a file called
 /stories/2004-1234.cfm

 I would like CGI.path_info to display

 /stories/2004-1234.cfm not /admin/createFile.cfm

 I also would like to be able to have

 cfset etc... processed when the article is requested by the user and not
 when the CFFILE is executed.

 thx, hope this is understandable

Re: 2d array question

2004-09-15 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi.

Personally I don't see anything different between your first way of
doing it and the second. I would thing that the second way is simply
doing the work CF would be doing behind the scenes anyway. The main
problem you are going to have is that if your code tries to reference
an array element that you have not defined, in this case [2][3] you
will get a CF Error about it not existing. Personally I would say best
practise would be to set the same number of elements in each row of
the array, but leave the one's you are not using blank. So your
example would end up being:

 cfscript
my_test = arrayNew(2);

my_test[1][1] = foo;
my_test[1][2] = bar;
my_test[1][3] = foobar;

my_test[2][1] = foo1;
my_test[2][2] = foo2;
my_test[2][3] = ;
 /cfscript

Then if you try and reference [2][3] you no longer get a CF error.

Andrew.

Subject: 2d array question
To: CF-Talk [EMAIL PROTECTED]

ok...in ColdFusion, a 2d array is a 1d array of 1d arrays.i think
 that's the first sentence in the docs under '2d arrays'.that's all
 well and good.

 i'm curious tho...is there any recommendation regarding the 2nd
 'dimension' being uniform length?for example, if I have the
 following:

 cfscript
my_test = arrayNew(2);

my_test[1][1] = foo;
my_test[1][2] = bar;
my_test[1][3] = foobar;

my_test[2][1] = foo1;
my_test[2][2] = foo2;
 /cfscript

 ... is that 'legal'?or should my_test[2] have a 3rd element in the
 2nd dimension?

 If i'm in a situation where i'm going to have inconsistent numbers of
 elements in the 2nd dimension...is it 'better form' to create 1
 dimensional arrays and then manually create a new array within each, a
 la:

 cfscript
my_test = arrayNew(1);

my_test[1] = arrayNew(1);
my_test[1][2] = foo;
my_test[1][2] = bar;
my_test[1][3] = foobar;

my_test[2] = arrayNew(1);
my_test[2][1] = foo1;
my_test[2][2] = foo2;
 /cfscript

 while the 2nd example is certainly the longer way around, it seems
 cleaner, in that each 'nested array' is created independently of the
 other, and therefore shouldn't care about different lengths.

 maybe i'm just being anal...but i feel like if i create a 2d array,
 then there is a distinct 'relationship' between all of the 2nd
 dimension values...and they should all be of a uniform length.

 is there any 'rule of thumb' as far as this is concerned?

 thx!

CF/Flash Question

2004-09-15 Thread Andrew Dixon
Hi Everyone.

I'm about to create some flash navigation within a website that I'll
need to have pass out the CFID and CFTOKEN session variables, does
anyone know of an easy way to get these variables from within Flash or
would i have to have them passed to the flash movie to start with?

Thanks for the info, but can you give me an example of how to pass the
variables in the Flash parameters and the actionscript to pick them
up. Bit new to Flash.

Thanks.

just have a cfm page set them as variables then deliver them to flash
by any of the available means

 depends on how ur going about it
 one of the easiest ways is to set the variables as normal in flash
the output them with an $ infront of each, the do a loadvar in your
flash movie

We've all said it a million times - don't use the hashes inside a CF tag that
 processes on its own.

 But one thing I've always wondered is why.I know doing this is wrong from
 years of seeing people scream at developers who do it, but I never heard an
 explanation as to what problems this causes.Anyone know the guts behind
 this?

But one thing I've always wondered is why.

 IMHO it's simply logic:
 the purpose of # delimiter is to specify that an _expression_ inside
should be evaluated
 when it is not implied by context.
 Inside a CFIF, the content cannot be something else, then # are just useless.
 Furthermore, I would think that the interpreter will need a couple
more steps to get to the
 same result.

Re: CFHTTP

2004-09-14 Thread Andrew Dixon
That is never going to work as _javascript_ is client-side and CF is
server-side. The CF script runs when the user requests the page. You
will have to do something like get the _javascript_ to call a script on
the server and pass the url entered as a query string on the script
call URL, or do it as a form submission.

I'm trying to get data (title of page) from a url which is passed with
_javascript_. The set (gotolink) seems to work, but cfhttp doesn't seem
to connect. The gotoLink output works also. What's wrong with my code?

 cfset goToLink =
'scriptdocument.write(window.opener.form.link_e.value);/script'

 cfoutputLink = #gotolink#/cfoutput

 cfhttp url="" resolveurl=no/cfhttp
 cfoutput#cfhttp.FileContent#/cfoutput

Re: CFHTTP

2004-09-14 Thread Andrew Dixon
Because when you output it the browser see the script tags and
processes and the document.write writes the output to the browser.
This however is done client-side and not server side. All the CF
server is the script... part and output it to the browser. If you
view the source in the browser you will see.

 Subject: SMTP or Telnet tools?

Hi,

 I'm looking for a way that I can execute a telnet/smtp session from my CF
 code and be able to review the responses from the smtp server for each
 command that is sent.

 For example, something like this:

 Open connection to mail.94percent.com
 send helo command
 read response
 send mail from: command
 read response
 send rcpt to: command
 read response
 send data command
 send data and . on last line to finish the send.

 I would obviously be adding some conditional code in there to take
 appropriate action based on the responses.

 I'm on CF MX 6.1 (updater 3) and have tried to use both IPWorks COM object
 and TCPCLIENT COM object to no avail.My server just freezes when I try to
 create the object.I'm assuming they're not compatible with mx 6.1.

 Any ideas?

 Thanks!

Hi guys,

 I looking for some advice. I have a DB with a table book which contains
 a field keywords. This field will be fill in with word separated by
 comma like (IT, Computer, Coldfusion, CFML, Web). This field can be
 updated and key words can be added or deleted.

 The user will use an UI with a search form where the search criterias
 could be: author, title and keywords for instance.The keywordfield
 will be a multiple select menu.

 My question is to know which one will be the faster to process for the
 application. A verity collection or a classic SQL query which will
 contain the specific keywords?

 Thanks,

Re: CF5.0 and XML

2004-09-09 Thread Andrew Dixon
If you just want to produce an XML file, that is simple. Create the
XML code in a variable and write it to the file system using CFFILE.
The functions in CFMX for XML mainly involved reading it, not writing
it, so they probably wouldn't help you much anyway.

 are a host of great XML-related tags, to make it easy, but what about
 turning a query into XML in CF5.0?

 It is straightforward?Are there any tutorials?

i havent actually played w/ cfscript too much, but in reading about it
briefly i believe its something like this

 for a comma del. list

 cfscript
 var=0; /* not sure if var = 0 if you dont set it first, you can
probably exclude this, but set it to be safe */
 while(VAR lte listlen(yourlist))
 {
var++; // this should work or ...
var=var+1; //
// do stuff
 }
 /cfscript

 for a query

 cfscript
 var=0;
 while(VAR lte query.recordcoount) // might need #query.recordcount#
 {
var++; // this should work or ...
var=var+1; //
// do stuff
 }
 /cfscript
