choosing a CF ecommerce solution...
Good evening group. I have a question about CF ecommerce packages. I am looking for the following features: a.. multiple stores on the same hosting account b.. store owners have their own domain names c.. store owners can administer their own stores, including managing inventory and UI themes d.. content management component allowing store owners to create static pages, such as contact, about us, FAQs, etc e.. some source code available for customization Separate license fees for each store is fine, but of course I would like to keep the investment low if possible. I have done some research on AbleCommerce and it seems like a good option. I am also looking at SiteDirector's Coldfusion shopping cart, but I don't know much about it yet. I am specifically looking at CF solutions because my wife knows ColdFusion, and we may want to customize the apps at a later time. If anyone has comments on the packages I mentioned, or any other packages for that matter, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your help. Foundry Designs Inc. Well...Yes, but touching over 2,000 PC's in 3 locations isn't on my list of things to over the weekend ;) We do have SMS, so we could try to push the change out to the PC's, but historically speaking we haven't had a good track record with SMS... OT: autorun program at logon?
Hey all, This is somewhat off-topic, but I can't find any good lists to post this question to and this is the only list I currently belong to. So, since this is a very active list with lots of helpful, intelligent folks (does it sound like I'm buttering you up? ;)... I've just been asked to create some sort of script/program/webpage/whatever that will automatically pop up on the user's screen when they log in to our network (NT, migrating to W2K soon). It is very simple--just a countdown to the end of this fiscal year. They don't care if it is a real-time countdown or if it is just a display of the number of days to the end of the FY, but they want to make sure that EVERY employee sees it EVERY day, first thing. Well, since I am a ColdFusion person (not so great in other programming venues, though I dabble in Javascript and Java), my first thought was to get the networking team to modify the login script to auto-launch IE (our standard web browser) and have the default page set to a ColdFusion page that I create with the countdown info. The upside of doing it this way is that I can have it done within about 20 minutes. Also, they may want to add graphics and other "marketing" type stuff later. The other requirement is that this program/feature be implementable in all of our locations worldwide. That's why I'm thinking of the CF solution (run on our servers here) as opposed to Java or Javascript, which may be disabled on a user's machine. Then each location would have to modify their login script to point to that CF page. I don't think this is a very "cool" solution--I think it would be cooler to actually create some sort of screensaver or popup utility that updates automatically with the countdown number and runs right on the desktop. But I wouldn't even know where to begin to implement this or what snafus I may run into. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Any thoughts? Opinions? I'm all ears!!! RE: Terrorist and gas shortage
Same situation here (metro Detroit). I filled up at 6:00 p.m., and could barely pull into the station. Gas was 1.57 then. An hour later it was 1.68. This morning on my way to work the same gas station went to 1.76. Relatives in other cities have told me that in some parts of Detroit and neighboring suburbs it has jumped to $5.00 a gallon! We have seen reports on grocery store runs, but I think that that will wane as the initial panic subsides. There really would be no reason to do such a thing, but I think it's human nature. I do find it interesting that when we hear of oil prices going down and wonder why it takes so long for that price drop to be reflected at our gas stations we hear the station owners say "Well, it takes quite awhile for the oil prices to affect our price", but when the prices go UP, we see the price change within a matter of hours. Re: legal question?????
Hi Amanda, Boy, your question sure reminded me of a similar situation where I work. Let me just say, I am NOT an attorney, so I don't know what the ramifications of this would be. I would think that if you were only doing what your management required you to do, you wouldn't be able to be pinned for any wrongdoing. After all, how do YOU know what the data is going to be used for? There have been a couple of occasions where my boss has asked me to pull data out of a database using CF (for a report, data administration, whatever) and I have no idea what the data is being used for, nor do I care. Secondly, what if you refused to include that data? That, I would think, could be considered insubordination, which is cause for termination. Here's my rule of thumb: When in doubt, *get it in writing*! If you really are concerned about it, type up an email outlining your concerns and send it to the powers-that-be that are driving this initiative. That way you have a legal record of where you stand on the issue. If they insist that you build it according to those specs, insist on a written response indicating such. I really doubt that you could be held liable for any terminations based on the application that you were directed to create (though in our increasingly letigious society I suppose anything is possible at this point). The application would run the numbers consistently across the board for all employees, correct? It's just that the numbers entered into the database could cause the skew. In that case, how can you be held responsible for the data entered into the database? Just my two-cents worth ;) Terri Original Message Follows From: Amanda Stern <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: CF-Talk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: legal question? One of the averages I am being asked to report will be a very skewed number and I am concerned because these averages are used to "grade" employees. People have been let go over these numbers. Bottom line is, I do not want to have any numbers on my report that I already know are skewed. I expressed my concern to my employer and they agreed that the numbers will be off but they want it anyways and they say they will take that into consideration. Re: Crystal Reports without cfreport
Hi Todd, Yep, it sure is possible. Here's how we did it, after having no luck with CFREPORT (CF 4.0 Enterprise). It wasn't easy, but we finally figured it out. We pass the CF variables into an ASP page, and then call the CFREPORT from the ASP page. If you go to Crystaldecisions.com and search for a download called ASPXMPS8, it will give you all of the examples you need. Of course, you also need the Web Component Service running on your server as well (so Crystal Reports can serve the report up via the browser). Here are my tips: This is how I passed the information from my page to the ASP page. Note that these are hidden fields only because these values came from my form page. If you have no interim page, you can just send the info directly from your form page: http://ourserver/open_rpt.asp"; method="post"> Note that the field names are named "param1", "param2", etc. This is what you need to name them. Crystal Reports will use whatever is in param1 as its first parameter, whatever is in param2 as its second parameter, etc. The files you will need from the examples on CrystalDecision's site are: open_rpt.asp (the main file--this is where you would change the dsn/pw info) rptserver.asp (I'm no ASP expert, but somehow this file tells ASP how to communicate with Cr. Rpts.) AlwaysRequiredSteps.asp (an include for open_rpt) MoreRequiredSteps.asp (another include for open_rpt) the JavaViewer and/or ActiveX viewer (allows the report to be viewed in the browser). Not being an ASP person, I didn't know how to fix this particular problem, but if you try to pass more parameters/fields than what open_rpt is expecting, you will get an error. Be patient. You will probably get alot of errors until you get this right ;) Original Message Follows From: "Todd Ashworth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: CF-Talk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Crystal Reports without cfreport Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 10:07:09 -0400 Does anyone have an example of connecting to a Crystal Reports report without using cfreport? Re: Next/Previous
Joshua, I like CF_QueryBrowse from the CF Developer's Exchange. It's extremely customizable. It also provides the actual result page numbers at the bottom (1, 2, 3, 4...etc., though I could not get that to work with this tag). The only weird thing I found is that for some reason, I cannot get the Next/Previous links to move over to the right side of my page--weird! But other than that, it works great. I ended up using this tag because I absolutely HAD to be able to use 2 queries in my Next/Previous result set, and this tag allowed me to customize it to do just that. can I combine this query somehow?
Hey group, I'm creating a search interface for my users, and due to the potential number of records being returned by the searches, I really need to use "Next N" browsing to display the returned records. However, since I cannot use more than one query with "Next N" browsing, I either need to find a way to combine my queries into one, or find an alternate navigation method that will allow more than one query in the results. The situation is this: I am pulling almost all of the information from a table called MAIN. However, there is a "Regions" column (VARCHAR) in the table that stores numbers in a comma-delimited format (e.g. '2000,3110,4300'). What I need to do is somehow pull the actual menu item name from the REGIONS reference table to correspond with each ID number in the MAIN.REGION list. BUT, I need to do this all in ONE query to use Next N browsing. So, does anyone have any ideas as to how I can either combine these queries to pull both the information from MAIN and from REGIONS, OR, does anyone have an alternate record navigation idea that would allow me to use multiple queries in the results? Need db advice
Hey all, Need some advice here. I have an app that functions somewhat like an old library card catalog index. It allows users to input market studies with an abstract, as well as the location of the material. The customer (our marketing dept.) wants a reference number to be generated in the format of "Continent/CompanySite/SequenceNumber" so that when records are listed, the users can easily scan the reference numbers and see where the item is located (for example, a reference number of "NA/ABH/21" would indicate that the document is located in Auburn Hills (North America). The 21 is simply the next sequence number from the Oracle DB. Okay, great. Now, when a user inputs a study they have to indicate the continent and the site. No problem. I use Nate's TwoSelectsRelated to populate the site list based on the continent selected. Buuut...if a site isn't listed in the picklist, we need to allow the user to add a new site. Okay, no problem. Buuut...here's the problem--our company has acronyms for each site, all over the world. So Auburn Hills might be ABH, Windsor might be WDR, etc. Because the reference numbers need to include the acronyms, those obviously need to be stored in the database. But, if we allow users to add their own locations, we run into the problem of users either A) using the wrong location acronym, or B) typing duplicate site names into the db. It would be nice if there was one central place where I could find all of the correct acronyms, but unfortunately, they aren't always standard. I thought of using just a numbering schema, but this does not prevent one person from adding location "Auburn Hills" and another from adding "Aubern Hils". I'm a little stuck. Can anyone bring their winch and tow me out? Thanks! Terri ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. select box formatting/validation
Hey all, I have a two-part question that I'm really hoping someone can answer. I have a multiple-select list that is populated from one table in my db. The list is constructed in such a way that there are main categories that each have their own subcategory. Some of those subcategories have their own subcategories. The main categories are all in uppercase, and the subcategories are indented, as appropriate, throughout the list. I don't want users to be able to select every item--I want them to have to select as far as they possibly can within the subcategories. So... QUESTION 1: Is there a way to disable selection ability on certain items within the select box (just don't allow it to be highlighted when clicked), and if so, how? QUESTION 2: How do I conditionally format the look of each of these menu items within this one select list? I have been successful in conditionally changing words to uppercase, or indenting, but I cannot get it to conditionally bold a word, change the font size, add a line break, etc. I've tried style sheets, but you have to actually specify the class in the tag, which won't work. I need to be able to optionally format the tags. I know a DHTML menu or a javascript would be better--that way I could just display the subcategories for selection as appropriate--but the customer really likes being able to see every possible category and subcategory in one box all at once. Thanks in advance for any and all insights! ***By the way, like most, I am not receiving any CF-Talk mail. Could you please cc me on all responses so I can get them immediately? Thanks! (Was:SOLVED: This should be simple--why is it not working?)
Thanks for taking the time to provide this explanation! I had a suspicion that it was something like this, but I was at a loss at determining exactly *why*. This cleared things up beautifully. Also, thanks to Larry J. for your input as well. I am very thankful for all of the helpful people on this list. CF was correct! 2001 is the numeric value of the date 06/23/1905. Here's a quick lesson on numeric date (and time) values DateFormat("6/14/2001", "YY") would output 01 DateFormat("2001", "YY") would view 2001 as the numeric value of a date which would be 2001 days past Dec 30, 1899 or 06/23/1905, hence your returned year value of 1905. If you do a number format on a date such as NumberFormat("6/14/2001") you would get 37,056 returned as the value (37,056 days past Dec. 30, 1899). The same is true for the time which is returned in a decimal format. So if you did NumberFormat(Now(), "_.__") you would get 37056.5117245370. This value equals {ts '2001-06-14 12:16:53'} as a date. Then to convert these back starting with 37056.5117245370... #DateFormat("37056", "mm/dd/yy)# to get 06/14/01 and #TimeFormat(".5117245370", "h:mm tt")# to get 12:16 PM You can also do it with the complete value... #DateFormat("37056.5117245370", "mm/dd/yy)# to get 06/14/01 and #TimeFormat("37056.5117245370", "h:mm tt")# to get 12:16 PM or for code to run in your browser MyValue = #NumberFormat(Now(), "_.__")#; MyDate = #DateFormat(ListFirst(MyValue, "."), "mm/dd/yy")#; /* Be sure to add the decimal back in the first parameter of the TimeFormat() function */ MyTime = #TimeFormat("." & ListLast(MyValue, "."), "h:mm tt")#; Serial Value: #MyValue# Date: #MyDate# (would output 06/14/01 and...) Time: #MyTime# (would output 12:16 PM or the time you run this code) Try it! It really does work quite well. This is an old approach that I think was originally developed in spreadsheet applications. I have used this method with a calendar applications and it's an interesting approach to dealing with dates. It can get confusing, but it is extremely accurate and effective in calculating date differences once you get the hang of it. Better than DateAdd? This is yet to be debated, but at least you have a little more understanding of what was originally happening with your code. HTH, Steve ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. SOLVED: This should be simple--why is it not working?
Okay, I'm a dork. Why do I always try to find the hard way to do things? I spent 2 hours trying to solve my problem. I tried using CreateDate, then DatePart to just get the year, DateFormat, etc. What I SHOULD have just done in the first place is used the "Right" function to just diplay the last two characters of the list_year variable. DOH! So, here's the modified select statement: selected>FY #right(list_year, 2)#/#right(end_fiscal, 2)# --- Hey all, I have a dropdown list that dynamically displays the fiscal years from 1999 up to the present fiscal year (so in this case, just 1999 and 2000. Well, instead of the year being displayed in the list, they want the actual fiscal year to be displayed in the format of 99/00, 00/01, etc. But we would still pass the year as 1999, for example, for fiscal year 99/00. So the option VALUE would be 1999, but the DISPLAY would be FY 99/00. Okay, so that should be simple, right? I should just wrap the variable for display in a format mask like so: FY #dateformat(list_year, 'YY')#/#dateformat(IncrementValue(list_year), 'YY')# Before I even GOT to that point, I just tested it by wrapping list_year in a dateformat function like so: #dateformat(list_year, 'YY')#. RE: Report Solution (long)--My shared experience
Sure. If you have a Crystal Report that is accessed directly through a URL, and not by passing parameters via a web page, and that Crystal Report expects certain input from a user, Crystal Reports will display a series of javascript-like prompts for the user to fill in. So, for example, one of the reports we have might have a series of prompts starting with group name to report on, start month for the fiscal year, end month for the fiscal year, etc. One all of the parameters have been supplied, the report will run. Since we are accessing the Crystal Report via a web page, those parameters are passed automatically from the page to the Crystal Report, so the user is never prompted for them (they would instead be asked for the information from the web page itself). In my situation, my web form only asks for 4 pieces of information: the group to report on, the fiscal year to report on, and the user's NT id and password. In the source code, all of the paramters (ten, in my case) are listed as param1, param2, param3, etc. It just so happens that for param1, I assign the value of #form.group#, because the Crystal report is expecting the group name to be supplied first. Param2 and Param3 are the start month and end month for the fiscal year that the user chose from a dropdown list labled "fiscal year". We'll assume they chose 2001 in this case. In my action page, I use CF functions to take the year 2001 and determine the start and end of that fiscal year (1001 and 0902, in MMYY format). So in the source code you see param2="1001" and param3="0902". The user may be able to look at the source code and see what these values are, but they don't know what I've done to arrive at those numbers or what they stand for. In addition, I have several other hidden fields in that CF template that were not provided by the user's input. So if they looked at the source code, they don't know what param4="1" means, or how it changes the report. Now, I am not suggesting in any way that the users would not be able to figure this out, or that they would not be able to just copy and paste the hidden fields "as is" to generate a report. Sure they could. But, in my case, if they have made it this far to where they are able to view the source code for this page, then they have been granted access to this report anyway. It's important to note that I am dealing strictly with an inTRAnet here, so I'm not as concerned about security hacks. Our biggest concern was hiding the db username and password. I'm pretty sparse on my knowledge of Crystal Reports, but I wonder if you could also specify in the Crystal Report a specific user name and password? I dunno. I'm not sure of the capabilities of Crystal Reports. RE: Report Solution (long)--My shared experience
hmmm. Good question. Yes, I suppose they could do that. Depending on how you set up your Crystal Report, however, you probably could make it more difficult for them to 'guess' what fields the report is expecting. For example, this is what my final CF page has in the source code: http://our.report.server.com/callreport.asp"; METHOD=POST onSubmit="return _CF_checkcontinue(this)"> Since the prompt values are being passed from a template, the report will not prompt the user for any of the needed values when the report displays in the browser. So, even though they may see in the source code that param2 is 1001, they may not figure out that the report is requesting (in MMYY format), the start of the fiscal year for the year that the user chose from the form dropdown list (in this case, 2001). Likewise, there is logic in my CF page to determine the end of the fiscal year, based on their choice (2001) from the previous page. See what I mean? Likewise, for param9/10, they would have no idea what "ALL" indicates, nor would they be able to guess what the other possible values would be. In our case, however, we are granting access to any employee to run any report (hey, I don't call the shots--that's how the group asked me to build it :), so we aren't too concerned with people taking the time to do something like that. The only reason that we are asking for an NT id and password is just so that we can validate that it is, in fact, a valid employee logging on. We may change this somewhere down the line and actually restrict access to certain reports, I don't know. Our whole concern with not exposing the db id/pw was because we didn't want people to be able to bypass reports and gain access to the actual Oracle db. If we DO end up restricting access based on groups somewhere down the road, I will be sure to post an update! :) Good luck! Report Solution (long)--My shared experience
Okay, all. I just spent 4 days tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to pass CF variables to a Crystal Report(8) (while hiding the db userid and password). I searched the archives and the Allaire site and noticed that many other people have been gnashing their teeth over the same topic, so I thought I would share our solution. It's not pretty, and I'm not looking forward to supporting it, but it will do until we can upgrade to 5.0. Is it just me, or does anyone else here feel like sometimes the only solution is to slap some duct tape on the problem? ;) Hopefully this will help someone else out. And, if anyone out there has any other ideas on how this could have been done, I welcome the input. So, here it is... Crystal Reports Case study Goal: To pass user-specified parameters from a ColdFusion web page to Crystal Reports for display through the user's browser. Scenario: ColdFusion Server 4.0 running on NT, IIS4 (we'll call it the CF Server) Trying to access a Crystal report (8) (we'll call it report.rpt) on a DIFFERENT server (we'll call it the report server) that is NOT running CF (IIS4 and the Crystal Reports Web Component Server). Challenge: We needed a way to access and display these reports from ColdFusion without passing the database username/password information in the source code. We also are having users enter their NT userid and password when they request a report, and we are calling an Oracle stored procedure on the CF action page to validate the id/pw. If it's valid, a session id is returned, which we need to pass to the Crystal report. Details:Our first thought was that this project would be simple because we could just pass all of our variables as either URL or hidden form variables. However, I realized that the Crystal report prompts for both a database id and password. I could not pass it as a hidden form variable, because a hidden form field is only hidden from the display, not from the source code. I then thought that we could use Encrypt() to encrypt the userid/pw and pass it in a URL or form variable. This would not work, though, because the Crystal report would have no way to decrypt it. The Encrypt() function would only have been useful to us if we were passing information from a CF page TO another CF page. Not being too familiar with Crystal Reports (I am not creating them--someone else is), I wasn't sure if Crystal Reports even has a similar Decrypt() function. So Why didn't we use the CFREPORT TAG? Well, believe me, I would have liked to. But, no matter what I did, I just could NOT get it to work. Even after combing through the archives and the Allaire site and implementing all of the suggestions, I still kept getting errors like "the report server is too busy" (even though I knew I was the only one on it), "File does not exist or is not in a directory that is accessible to the ColdFusion service" (this one happened whether I was calling the report on the report server, or whether I was calling the report from the SAME directory using an absolute path.), and a host of other errors. Final solution: We ended up creating the actual form in Coldfusion, then using another CF template for the action page. On that page, we called our stored procedure to verify that a valid employee was logging in. If not, an error is displayed indicating such. If so, then a continue button is displayed and all of the fields from the first form are carried over via hidden form fields (minus the db userid/pw). Both of these CF templates are on the CF server, of course. This form on the CF action page (that displays the continue button) submits to an ASP page that is sitting on the report server. That ASP page then passes all of the form fields from the CF page, as well as the database userid/pw to the crystal report (on the report server). TIPS: Go to www.crystaldecisions.com, and in their download area, search for ASPXMPS8. These are all of the ASP examples that you should need. Specifically, we used the "SimpleSetLogonInfo.asp" file as our primary example for doing this, as well as "SimpleParameterFields.asp". Just rename the template and replace their database info with your own. Our variable names were Param1, Param2, Param3, etc., and we were sure to name them as such when we were passing them from the CF template. The Crystal Report will expect the parameters to come in order, so make sure that the first value that you are passing to the report (i.e. Param1) is the first prompt that would pop up in the report (after the db logon and password info). THE GOOD NEWS: According to my MM rep, CF 5.0 will provide complete support for Crystal Reports 8.0. I hope so, because I'm not looking forward to going through this for the dozen or more reports that we're going to have to call! J ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Get the offici

I have tried every syntax I can think of in the CFREPORT tag to point to that .rpt file, but I get the error: "The report file you have specified (mypath) either does not exist or is not accessible to the ColdFusion service. Please verify that the name of the report file is spelled correctly and that the file is located in a directory which is accessible to the ColdFusion service." Okay, so I copied the .rpt file and placed it in the SAME directory as the calling CF template. However, that server does not have the web component service installed, and I keep getting the error that there "is not enough memory to complete the request." If I reach out to the CF server to see what's going on, There is a popup error message that states "file could not be opened." Now, normally I would just install the web component server and that probably would solve it, but my boss has the disk and he is out of town. It's driving me crazy because I KNOW there should be a way to call this template from a different server that is NOT running CF. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance! RE: Printing, page breaks, and heading info
Paul, thanks for the tip. That's a great idea! I think now that what I would prefer to do is have the shipping address/contact info print at the top of *every* page that prints. I just haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Thanks for the help! After head banging by a lot of people, I came up with the following code. When printed from "most" browsers, it prints in what looks like page breaks because of the way browsers try to not break images. If you tie your text content to an image (that is around 80% of the page height) with a table, the browser will print what looks to the user as page breaks. You might need to adjust the height of the spacer, but I think this is the number that worked in Netscape and IE 3 up. Thanks, Carol and Adrian! Since I'm doing alot of complex looping, conditionals and variable setting within my display block (and heck, just cuz I'm lazy today ;), I don't want to go back in and change alot of code. RE: Is this possible?
Ooh, here's where it gets really hairy, though. I neglected to mention in my first post that I am using the CF_TwoSelectsRelated tag. Here's the deal. This is an employee suggestion application. The page I am enhancing is the page where the admin can route the suggestion to the appropriate group and individual. Each group (e.g. HR, HelpDesk, Communications, etc.) has one or more default evaluators assigned to it. The CF_TwoSelects related tag creates a query driven drop-down menu for the departments. Based on what is selected in the first menu, the second menu is then "generated" to display the default evaluator(s) for that group. The users have the option to keep this default value from the second list, or override it and choose a different value. To choose a different evaluator, they can either type in the person's first and last name into the provided text box, or they can click a search button. Clicking that button pulls up a javascript(from another server) box that queries our LDAP (I didn't write it), from which the admin can find the user name, click on the button, and the evaluator's NT id is automatically populated into the text field. My action page checks to see if the value passed is an NT id or a full name, and resolves the full name to the NT id if needed. (The function for the script is in my application.cfm file, since several pages throughout the app use the name picklist.) WHEW! Okay. So, probably more information than anyone cares to think about, but that is what is making this so difficult. Thanks for the code snippets. They are helpful--but does anyone know how I would incorporate them based on the way my page is currently set up? Here is a portion of the code on my page: Proposed Evaluator Group: Default Evaluator ID: Do you wish to use the default Evaluator for this group? Yes, assign to the default Evaluator. No, override this and assign it to: (Enter either the person's first and last name, or search for their NT userid.) Querying NT directory permissions?
Hey all, I apologize in advance if this topic has already been discussed ad nauseum, but I'm not even sure where to begin looking in the archives for this.(I did search, but haven't found anything yet to help me out.) Here's what I need to do. Our department sets up all directories for web publishers within our company. We have an online form that users fill out to request web space, and then someone on our team sets it up. We would like to build an application that will display: --all of the current web sites (i.e. "folders"), --all GROUPS that have permission to access the folder, --all INDIVIDUALS that have permission to access the folder, --the entire CONTENTS of each folder and any file-level permissions, --Disk space usage, --number of files of each type (.doc, .pdf, .xls, etc.) --Any primary and secondary publishers to the site, as well as associated passwords (if possible. Of course this is for our team's eyes only!) We do not want to have to store this information in a database--we want to pull it right off of the NT box itself. I know I can use CFDIRECTORY to display the directory contents, and I can find the number of each file type, but how can I display permissions and disk space? Is that even possible? Publishers all use FrontPage, so we will have one server for all of the FrontPage sites, and a completely separate server for all of our CF apps. If anyone has done something similar I would love to know how you implemented it. Thanks! Terri ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. email attachment woes
Hey group, This is my first foray into sending email attachments via CF. I *almost* have it working correctly. The problem is, if I try to upload a document with a name like (for example) "my_document.doc" and the file doesn't already exist on the server, the file gets uploaded with the name "my_document.doc", but it does not get attached to the email. If I go back and resubmit "my_document.doc", the NAMECONFLICT attribute assigns it a new name. In this case, it DOES get attached to the email. How can I ensure that EVERY attachment specified by a user gets attached? Also, how do I allow for HTML attachments? Here is my code in my action page: ** Email body here... ** Thanks! Migrating to CF 4.5 and W2K?
Hey all, Quick question here. We are planning to migrate from Win NT 4.0 to W2K very soon. We would also (pending approval from purchasing) later like to upgrade to CF 4.5. The long and the short of it is that unfortunately, we only have one box at our disposal to use for our server. Consequently, we have to run both development and production from that one box. (I know, I know...bad idea. But hey, in a perfect world I'd also be 4 inches taller ;) We want to actually have dual environments from this one box. That is, we don't want to have to have development as a subdirectory of the prod area--we want production to have one directory structure, pointing to it via (for example) "INFO.ourinternaldomain.com", and development to have it's own separate directory structure, pointing to it "DEV.ourinternaldomain.com". Will we have to have 2 licenses for this? I'm assuming so, since CF admin only allows you to define one root directory. Does CF 4.5 allow for specifying 2 different root directories? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that we maybe are overlooking (obtaining another server is not an option)? The apps that we build are entirely internal to the company, and range from small department-level apps using Access to large global apps using Oracle. Thanks in advance! RE: Syntax for binding a query?
Oops. Yes, I should have been more specific :) and stipulated "bind variables". I'm talking about improving our db performance by "caching" the best execution paths for the queries. I know 4.5 uses the CFQUERYPARAM tag, but alas, we are still on 4.0. I was hoping that there would be an equivalent way in 4.0 that would be relatively painless, but from what I've found so far, it looks like our only choice would be to used stored procedures to pass the variables to Oracle and allow Oracle to do the rest... To me "binding a query" refers to the action of associating values with variable names when when querying a database. In SQL this is simply done by saying "WHERE columnname = value". Or are you asking about "bind variables" in Oracle PL/SQL? These are local variables in stored procedures or triggers which you declare "VARIABLE variablename datatype" and refer to by saying something like ":variablename := value" Nick ** Information in this email is confidential and may be privileged. RE: CFREPORT and CR8 (Was: OT: I know NOTHING about CR!)
I spoke with a tech rep from Seagate Software (makers of CR), and he corroborated this info--that CFREPORT is no longer supported. The rep told me that CR8 would accomplish what I described in my previous post, but if we didn't want to have anything installed on clients then our only choice would be to save the reports in HTML format. However, since CF cannot directly access report objects, we would have to pass parameters to the rpt file and launch it from there (using the web component server). The problem here, he explained, is that your db username and password would be exposed in the source code. An alternative method would be to use a CFFORM to pass parameters to an ASP template (blasphemy ;) and allow ASP to process it, and then export the results to Excel. Thanks for the info! Re: CFFILE Issue
Yes, I found it strange as well. I would think that for such a MAJOR issue as this one, I would have definitely heard about it before--and there DEFINITELY would have been an article on it somewhere! JFYI, for those of you who have asked--I am using CF 4.0.1 (on NT). I agree fully with your analogy, Billy. I am hoping that there is more to this story. I've seen no major announcement from Allaire, and this seems like a MAJOR issue. You could use a file upload COM object (the way you'd do it in ASP; go to any ASP site to find some). Built-in functionality is ColdFusion's strongest selling point; I really don't want to find out that I have to resort to COM objects (otherwise, I'd use ASP). However, I personally find this unacceptable. File uploading is a major piece of ColdFusion functionality; fixing such a bug should be Priority 1 for Allaire. We paid money for the product expecting it to work. This is a bit analogous to buying a new car, and finding out that the windows don't roll up. Response from the dealership would be, "Um, we're working on that. Just duct tape a trash bag to cover up your window." I suspect that you may have been given incorrect information; if not, I would consider it extremely irresponsible of Allaire to not release this information sooner. I know there's some Allaire folks who monitor the list; could someone from Allaire please address this issue? Otherwise I suspect Allaire will have a few thousand (how many people subscribe to this list?) developers confused and/or misinformed and/or angry. -- Billy Cravens [EMAIL PROTECTED] Terri Stocke wrote: > > Hey all, > > I spoke with an Allaire regional tech rep last week who told me in no > uncertain terms that we should NOT be using the CFFILE tag at all until the > issue they have discovered with it has been resolved. [still unresolved] JavaScript "object expected" error
Thanks to everyone who has patiently helped me thus far! RE: comparing original data with user inputted changes
David, Thanks for taking the time to help me out on this. In fact, I would very much prefer to do the check client-side -- I've only steered clear of it because of my lack of expertise with javascript. I am fiddling around with the example you provided (thanks for taking the time to write that), and came up with the following: function validateForm(){ var registeredCount = #registered.registered_count#; for (i=0;i#classname.class_size#){ alert('The maximum class size is " & #classname.class_size# & "."); return false; } return true;} (I named the form "adminchange".) I keep getting a javascript error "unterminated string constant". I'm assuming that I need to change the "element" placeholder? I know I'm sounding really ignorant here, but not dealing with this every day, I need to lean on some expertise a bit more. I'll be up all night tonight until I get this piece working. They want to put this into production tomorrow morning! Thanks so much for your help! Assuming that the submitted page contains ALL the requests for the class, you don't really care what the current vs. original status is for each item, right? You only care if the total "registered" GT "class size". You could do something like, (pseudo code) get maxClassSize set registeredCount = 0 LOOP formfields IF formfield name is one you're interested in and value = 'registered' increment registeredCount ENDIF ENDLOOP IF registeredCount > maxClassSize abort ENDIF UPDATE DB Of course, the admin is going to be bummed out if you don't return the selected values on the form for them to resubmit. In addition, your server has to spend time processing invalid input. This seems like a good opportunity for some client-side validation. When the user clicks the form Submit button, you could loop through the appropriate form fields and get the "registered" count; you could compare this to the maxClassSize, stored in a hidden form field or a javascript variable . If the value is too high, display an alert, and interrupt the processing. I don't know what your experience is with JavaScript, but it's the same psuedo-code as your CF page. One important piece of JavaScript knowledge is that the form elements form a collection you can loop through. You also need to give the relevant fields a similar prefix. function validateForm(){ var registeredCount = 0; for (i=0;i maxClassSize){ alert('The maximum class size is " & maxClassSize & "."); return false; } return true; } Of course, if you're using VBScript, the syntax is different. Good luck. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. comparing original data with user inputted changes
All, I'm still struggling with this particular piece of funtionality, so I'm reposting... I'm working on a class approval app where employees fill out a form to request management approval to enroll in a company sponsored class. An admin can go in and view all requests for each particular class, and change each request status (registered, wait list, pending approval, not approved, cancelled) via a dropdown list for each record. She can make all of her changes on the one screen, and click submit to update all of the records at once (via a loop in the update query in the action page). Now, I don't want the admin to make the mistake of overbooking the class. So, I pass a hidden field with each record to indicate what the original status was for each record. Then in the action page, I'm trying to compare the original status with the status the user (may have) changed it to. If the admin changed a status to "registered" (represented by the value "1"), then I want the registered_count to increment. I then want to compare the registered_count to the maximum class size. If it has been exceeded, I want to display a CFABORT error message before any data is even written to the database. This is what I've tried so far, but unfortunately, this is still allowing me to register beyond the class capacity: Any suggestions? Thanks! Browser problem?? Grasping at straws here.
Hey all, I just installed CF Ent. 4.0 on my NT4.0 Server (IIS). I verified that the install was successful by running the test query provided by Allaire. I then created a subdirectory under wwwroot for an app that I have been working on at work and placed my .cfm files in a folder called "application" (incidentally, these files work fine on the workplace network). I placed my access db under a directory called "database". I set up the DSN in CF admin and verified it. I also set up the DSN via the ODBC datasource administrator. When I browse to my page via Explorer, the page (i.e. HTML) shows up, but the query-generated dropdown boxes don't have the data displayed. Instead, the CF variables are shown. None of the forms are functional. If I use Netscape 4.7 and try to browse to a .cfm file, I get a "save as" prompt! I seem to recall someone else here having this problem at one time, but I could not find the info on it. I also combed the Knowledgebase, but couldn't find anything. Obviously it's not an install or DSN problem (the test for installation worked, and my DSN was verified). There must be something with my browser setup that's causing this? Or maybe (in the case of the IE problem) some coding errors? Can someone please tell me how to resolve these problems? Thanks! Terri p.s. Yes, all of my variables are wrapped in cfoutput tags. I know the cf code is fine, because I literally took the working pages off of our network at work, threw them on a disk, then brought them home to work on. Any input is greatly appreciated! _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. RE: preventing overbooking of classes
Hi James! Thanks for your response. Well, yes...I could have the coordinator edit one record at a time as you described. I will probably use your suggestion as my last resort, but what we really wanted was a very convenient interface so that the coordinator could update the entire class roster at a glance. The other factor is that if the coordinator sees the updated roster and wants to go back and re-edit her changes, I don't want that form to refresh--I want her to be able to quickly see which fields she had changed previously. Make sense? My boss (all hail the guru programmer ;) suggested that I pass a hidden form field from the form that contains the original value of the registration status for each record. That way, the original value is passed to the action page, AS WELL AS the updated value from the dropdown box. Then I can compare the two fields for each record on my action page before any updates occur. I'm going to give this a try. Stay tuned all, as dealing with these loops sometimes throws me for a loop :))) Thanks, James! You may have already thought of this but want to do it differently, but... What about setting the coordinator's registration process to be able to only approve 1 student at a time? That way, while in the registration admin page, you can display the list of those waiting for approval, plus the number of available slots. The coordinator approves a person, and you give the standard " Mr.X Approved for class Y / approve another person / back to admin main page" type page in return. And when the coordinator says "yeah, I'll approve that other guy" you'll be pulling up your refreshed counts, and if there are no available slots in the class, you can show the appropriate "class full" message, and the person will not be *able* to register more students than class slots. Of course, the downside is if you're working with large classes, or a lot of students. ;> Is this something resembling what you want to do? preventing overbooking of classes
Hi All, Let me say in advance that this will be a lengthy description of my problem, as I believe the more info you have, the better position you will be in to help me... [deep breath] Okay. I have (for the most part) a simple app that allows employees to request approval for training. There is an administrator section that allows the training coordinator to view all of the requests and their status (registered, pending approval, not approved, cancelled, wait list) as well as change their registration status and the approver's name. Here is the form that displays the editable fields generated for each approval request brought up by the search(admin_search_action.cfm). (The records are pulled based upon the class id): #student_name# #student_phone# #student_location# #status_name# Please verify that your changes are correct. When you are ready to save your changes, click: . Now, when this form is displayed on the page, I also query the classes table to determine the maximum number of students the class will allow. I also determine the number of records in the request table that have a registration_status of 1 (for registered) and subtract this from the maximum capacity to come up with the number of seats left. There is also code to determine the number of students on the wait list. We'll come back to that later. This is the important part. Okay, now this form obviously posts to admin_edit.cfm (passing the classid). This is the code from the action form: SELECT DISTINCT * from class where classid=#url.classid# UPDATE Request SET Actual_Approver_Name = '#Evaluate("actual_approver_name" & ThisRow)#' , registration_status = #Evaluate("status_name" & ThisRow)# , actual_approval_date=#now()# WHERE requestID = #Evaluate("form.requestID" & ThisRow)# SELECT Count(*) AS registered_count FROM request WHERE registration_status=1 and classid=#url.classid# SELECT Count(*) AS wait_count FROM request WHERE registration_status=2 and classid=#url.classid# SELECT * FROM Request, Class, status Where request.classid=#url.classid# AND class.classid=request.classid AND status.statusid=request.registration_status ORDER BY status.statusid, request.request_date Whew! I promise, we're almost done here... Now, the idea is that the following should happen when the training coordinator updates a record: 1) If there is still space in the class and the training coordinator changed the status to "registered", the request table should update accordingly and a confirmation page should display with the updated class roster (got that part okay) AND the new figures for maximum class size, seats available, and students on the wait list (got this part, too). Assuming all goes well, an email should be kicked off to the student and to his/her manager, confirming the registration (I have not placed this code in yet, until after I get all of these other checks in place). 2) If the training coordinator changes any of the student registration statuses to anything other than "registered" (assuming they had previously been registered) and that frees up a seat for someone else, they should be prompted to choose a student or students from the wait list to register for the class. 3) If the training coordinator tries to register a number of students that exceeds the maximum class size, I do NOT want the database to update and I do NOT want any emails to be generated until she goes back and modifies the form. Now, somehow I need to determine which records from the form had a status change, and what that status change was, BEFORE they are processed by my update statement. I then need to take this new number and compare it to the database, and generate any error messages as appropriate based upon this comparison. I tried using a loop and evaluate (without an update query) to set a new variable, but this did not work. I'm thinking that my best bet would be to use a javascript on the actual form page itself that evaluates all of the status changes in the drop-down menus and then utilizes my CF variables in that page for the maximum seating capacity, seats available, wait list, etc. So, I fear that the time has come for me to finally learn WDDX? Does anyone have any examples of code that they could share to help me out with this? JavaScript is not

Re: Ok, What is Fusebox?
Mark, "Fusebox" is a method of structuring your ColdFusion applications for ease of maintenance. Instead of writing each application page with separate queries in each page, you write all of your components separately, then use them as needed in your pages via includes. This is quite advantageous, especially if you find yourself using the same queries over and over in every page. So, as an example, you might structure your site with a folder called "queries", a folder called "blocks" etc. You would then write your queries and save each one in a .cfm file with a file name like "qry_getmaindata", "qry_calculatedate", etc. Those files with the qry prependage would go in the query folder. Similarly, for any code that is used to display output (tables, output tags, etc.), you would put those .cfm files in separate folder called "blocks" and prepend those with "blk_". The idea is that each of these separate pages performs a very specific task. Then, when you need to use them, you just call them into your pages via includes. Makes code reuse so much easier. I sort of think of it like building applications "lego-style" ;) You can read all about it at http://www.fusebox.org. RE: CF vs UltraDev
Actually, UltraDev was not necessarily meant to be a replacement for ColdFusion--it was developed to enhance the development environment and create a more "wysiwyg" environment for more rapid development. You can choose a default platform and change it at any time (even on a per-project basis). It has a very nice interface for building your queries, and it allows you to drag and drop the variables right into the page, wherever you want them displayed. You can very easily incorporate Next N browsing, e-commerce, regular expressions, etc. Basically, anything you could do with ColdFusion, JSP or ASP--you can do with UltraDev. The nice thing is, you don't even have to buy a new app server--just use your existing one. Per Macromedia's site: "UltraDev currently supports ASP 2.0, ColdFusion, and the JSP 1.0 server including Microsoft IIS, Allaire ColdFusion, IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic, and the Netscape Enterprise Server. However, UltraDev can be extended to support any server." And it supports "ODBC, JDBC, or ADO relational databases including Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft Access." This is why their site still showed a .cfm extension. They very well may have used UltraDev, but their server is a ColdFusion server. Therefore, they would have had it set to default to the CF technologies. Similarly, if they were using IIS, they would have defaulted to ASP and had a .asp extension. I went to a demonstration held by Macromedia on this, and I was quite impressed. I am currently evaluating UltraDev for our Software Development Team. Though it currently does not have anything in place for version control (you would still have to use something like SourceSafe), they plan on implementing this in the next version, which is due to be out by the end of this year. I am absolutely amazed at the speed with which one can construct applications. Things that would take a couple of hours in ColdFusion Studio took a matter of minutes in UltraDev. And, you have complete access to your HTML and SQL, should you need to create anything more advanced than the interface will let you accomplish. I would highly recommend checking it out (and you can download the demo) at http://www.macromedia.com/software/ultradev/. Re: how to calculate elasped time in SQL?
Greg, I highly recommend the CF_ConvertMinutes custom tag from the Allaire Gallery. It's extremely simple to use, and will do exactly what you are looking for... Terri Original Message Follows From: Greg Saunders <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: how to calculate elasped time in SQL? Date: Fri, 01 Sep 2000 07:21:27 -0500 I'd like to calculate in SQL the elapsed time between two dates, so the result would be something like: 2 days, 6 hours, 32 minutes, 15 seconds but I can't figure out how to do it easily. What I'd really like is to use some built-in SQL conversion function, like this: CONVERT(char, date2-date1, 8). This calcuates the TIME between dates nicely, but it truncates any difference in days, and I couldn't find any other conversion that was closer. I've tried using dateDiff with each datepart, like this: dateDiff(day,date1,date2), dateDiff(hour,date1,date2), etc. But this doesn't work, because if date1 and date2 differ by 23 hours (for example), it still returns a 1 day difference if date1 and date2 fall on different days. My current solution is this: convert(char(2), floor(convert(float, date1-date2))) + 'days, ' + CONVERT(char, date1-date2, 8) which works, but feels extremely clunky, especially since I'd like to repeat this "elapsed time" functionality through many queries. I realize I could do this in CF by taking the difference in seconds and then using a combination of division and MOD, but I'm really looking for a concise way to do this in SQL. Any suggestions? Is it possible to encapsulate this functionality in SQL, so that I could call something like: SELECT myElaspedTime(date1, date2) FROM table... greg -- Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/cf-talk@houseoffusion.com/ To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: Help
Alan, The situation here is that essentially these two queries are the same. "Userid" is automatically going to be defined--the form fields from your form (submission) page will automatically be passed to this processing (action) template. I think I understand what you are getting at. Let me take a stab at this. I I were to go about this, I would pass the userid from form 1 to the second form. Then, when you fill out the inventory form, add a CF_location tag at the END of your processing (all processing stops after the CF Location tag is encountered, and you are taken immediately to the page specified). Append the userid to the CF_Location URL. Does it sound like I am addressing your problem correctly? I think that I will just split up my queries by writing a separate query to the web_profile.at_users table (populated from our NT network) and joining it to the data query to get the corresponding user names for the userid's. resource for learning more about sessions?
Hi! Well, try as I may, I am just not fully understanding all of the intricacies of session management. I've read through my CFWACK4.0 book, all over the Allaire website, and on the ColdFusion Developer's Journal website. Does anyone have any URL's they could point me to? The real problem for me is that I am not using session management in the "traditional" sense. I receive my session id via an Oracle stored procedure, then check for it via an include page that contains a check against the db to verify that the session id exists (I do not utilize application.cfm). Bill, I'm no expert, but I have used Nate's TwoSelectsRelated, so I'll see what I can do to help here... First, could I see your query that you are using to populate the lists? Also, you mentioned that you are getting an error ("If I select number two then try to select ANYTHING in select list number two it throws an error..."). What is the error you are getting? Terri Original Message Follows From: "Bill Killillay" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Cf-Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,"FuseBox List" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: ThreeSelectsRelated?? Help plz... trying begging now *grin* Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2000 11:20:03 -0400 Ok here is the syntax that gives me two errors. Error ONE: Right now there are only two items in the first select list. If I select number two then try to select ANYTHING in select list number two it throws an error. Error TWO: If I select the first item in select list one and then select one of the items in select list two, the options that I get for select list three are wrong. They are the options some how for what should have been list number two in the first select list, I think anyway. Now here is the syntax that gives me no errors, but does not fully meet the needs of what we need to do. With it in this method we dont get the "Select Style", "Select Color" etc. So when the form loads it's got the first option as being displayed. But there are not contents for option one in select list two or three. To get those you have to select something else and then come back to option one. So how can I either get option one to work with the "Select Style" in there or option two to work where even though the first option is in the first select list is displayed so are the options that go with that in select list two and three. Thanks. Re: SQL JOIN
You could pull the max ID from each table like this: > SELECT Max(db2admin.tb_assigned.id) AS MaxOfID1, Max(db2admin.tb_complete.id) AS MaxOfID2 > FROM db2admin.tb_assigned,db2admin.tb_complete > where db2admin.tb_assigned.id = db2admin.tb_complete.id > > > or whatever... preventing simultaneous updates
Hi, I am trying to implement a check in my pages so that if user A is editing record 1 from edit form A at the same time that user B is editing record 1 from edit form B, the user who submits it second will get an error that someone has just updated this record. I have a field in my table called "status_date", which is populated with the sysdate every time a record is updated. This is what I've attempted: In each form page itself, I've immediately queried the current status date for the record. When I display this on the page for testing purposes, it displays in the format 2000-08-25 10:22:39. I then assign this value to a variable called "last_status_date". Then I pass last_status_date as a hidden field to my action page (the page that does the updates. Immediately in my action form (before any updates are made, I have the following: SELECT STATUS_DATE FROM SUG_SUGGESTIONS WHERE SUGGESTION_ID=#URL.SUGGESTION_ID# I have displayed the output of datedifference to see what is going on... On my action page, this is what I get for output: form last status date: 2000-08-25 status check from this page: 2000-08-25 10:40:59 difference: 0.445127314815 What is happening is that for some reason, the time portion of form.last_status_date is not passing with the hidden field, even though form.last_status_date fully displays on the form page as desired. Why would this be? Also, I believe that my reasoning is flawed for what I am trying to do, because of the actual dates. Should I be using different logic for determining if the record has been updated by user A just before user B submitted? Does this make sense? Thanks! "Newbie" trying to understand CFTRANSACTION
Hi All, I'm reading about this CFTRANSACTION tag, and I'm not really clear on what it's used for. The CF Web App Const. Kit book states that it "...implements transaction and rollback processing. Any tags placed between and tags are automatically rolled back if an error occurs." Am I correct in interpreting this to mean that if, for example in my own application, when a user submits a form to an action page that updates my database AND also sends off various emails, that if the query pulling the emails from the email table fails, the other updates to the database will still be made? If I'm off base here, what are the practical applications of this tag? Thanks! How can I get around this?
Hi All, I have a login screen that passes the userid to a query: SELECT suggestion_id, suggestion_name, status_code, actual_evaluator_userid FROM SUG_SUGGESTIONS WHERE status_code IN ('I', 'E', 'F', 'S') AND actual_evaluator_userid='#url.userid#' Basically, whenever the user comes back to this page (eval.cfm), I want only those records that pertain to that userid to be displayed. Seems simple enough. The problem is that I have an included template for my left-hand navigation. This left-hand navigation has no idea what userid was passed from the form, so every time someone clicks on the link to go back to eval.cfm from the navigation bar, an error is thrown that the parameter "url.userid" cannot be resolved. I really don't want to go back through and take out all of my included pages. Is there any other way I can get around this? Thanks! Re: (WOT) Employment rewards. Stock Options etc.
Eric, You may want to check out http://www.wetfeet.com/industries/dotcom/home.asp. You have to create a user account, but it's free. There's alot of great information on this site regarding the internet industry, salaries, perks, etc. This is only MHO, but I much prefer working as an inTRAnet developer as opposed to inTERnet with a dot.com. The reasons for this include: --Less need to take into account multiple environments (e.g. browsers, etc.). When working on internal sites, you are guaranteed (generally) some kind of standardization. (Call me lazy, I guess ;) --Less overtime! Dot com's will require you to burn the midnight oil. If an internal site goes down, it's a problem that can more likely wait until the next business day. If an external site goes down, it's CODE RED--DROP everything! On the plus side, dot com's may offer more exposure to multiple technologies and more learning opportunities (although it really depends on your company--my company is quite good about training opportunities and advancement). If you DO decide to go with a dot com, do your research! I can't stress this enough. With the boom of the internet industry, dot coms are springing up all over the place. Most of them are extremely young. While no one in any industry is ever guaranteed that they will have a job tomorrow, dot coms are coming and going on a daily basis. In this respect, job security with dot coms can be quite shaky. So, just because it is a dot com, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be successful. There are a few cases out there where employees on the ground floor of a startup have made it big with the stock options, etc., but those are few and far between, from what I hear. That being said, I think that the dot coms are often more creative in their attempts to lure talent. This could include the ability to telecommute (major plus in MY book), stock options, casual attire, reimbursement for home ISP, etc. One dot com in my state hosts weekly meetings on Fridays where employees crash in bean bag chairs and drink beer :). I think that even if the salary is not what you are necessarily looking for, you will have lots of room to negotiate some interesting "perks". Good luck with your decision! I sometimes feel badly that I cannot help out the others as much as they have helped me, simply for the fact that I don't have as much experience under my belt. However, with everyone's help I am learning more and more each day, and soon will be able to shoulder some of the responsibility for helping both newbie and veteran CF'ers alike :) On a different note, I would like to let anyone in the Detroit area know that there is a new CFUG group that just started meeting in June. another newbie confused about session management
Hi! I've been reading the posts on session management, and sadly, I am still utterly confused. What compounds my confusion is the fact that I am using session management in conjunction with an Oracle stored procedure. I must admit, I'm over my head here--BIG time. Scenario: I have several screens that only authorized evaluators should be able to access. All of these evaluator screens are in a folder called "eval". Similarly, I have a set of screens that only an assigned administrator should be able to access. Those screens are kept in a folder called "admin". Right now I am focusing only on the evaluator pages. I have created login.cfm and login_action.cfm. The action page supplies two input parameters to the stored procedure (userid and password, from the form). It outputs either a session id or an error: "Bad User ID or Password". I know that I will need to use an include template on any of the pages that are to be protected by this password. This is where I get lost. What exactly do I put in this page? How do I get the sessionid from the login_action.cfm page to this include page? I know I'll need the application.cfm file, but I'm not sure what else to put in it other than the cfapplication tag and its attributes. Here's what I was given by the dba: -- "In Summary here are the Functions/Procedures We have to date. PROC: APP_SECURITY.Create_Session( in_usr , in_pwd , sesid ) Input: in_usr, in_pwd (varchar2) Output: sesid (varchar2) Returns (Output): SesID OR 'Bad User ID or Password' (OK, I GOT THIS PART TO WORK OKAY...login.cfm IS ACTUALLY RETURNING A SESSION ID) (THIS STUFF IS ALL GREEK TO ME...I know that these are all functions, but what the heck do I do with them? FUNC: APP_SECURITY.Renew_session ( sesid, in_pwd) Input: sesid, in_pwd (varchar2) Returns: BOOLEANTRUE OR FALSE FUNC: DB_APP_STD.chk_ses ( sesid, valid_hrs) Input: sesid (varchar2) valid_hrs (number) Returns: Varchar2 'UserID' OR NULL Try SELECT DB_APP_STD.chk_Sess (sesid, 3) from at_users where userid = 'whateverid' FUNC: DB_APP_STD.cnv_bl ( chk_val) Input: chk_val (BOOLEAN) Returns: Varchar2 'TRUE' OR 'FALSE' Examples: To Check Session: select db_app_std.check_session ( 'SesID') from dual; Select will return a varchar2 'UserID' OR Null To Renew Session: select db_app_std.cnv_bl(app_security.renew_session ( 'SesID','UsrPwd')) from dual; Select will return a varchar2 'TRUE'/'FALSE' " I am so lost. What do I put where, and what gets passed to what to make sure the user is logged in? I am feeling like such a dork. I know that the dba literally spelled everything right out for me, but I need some more help with this one. Any stored proc/session management gurus out there that care to take some time out to hand-hold a newbie programmer? Thanks in advance! Actually more of a browser question...
Hey everyone! I just joined the list. I've been using CF for about 9 months now, and I'm fairly wet behind the ears still when it comes to programming, too, so I look forward to learning from you all. I have a simple page in my application that allows users to click on a link that takes them to a dynamically populated select list so that they can change the information in the database via this list. It has been working fine up until today. Today I browsed to the page (NN 4.7), and the page with the select list was "garbled" -- my left navigation bar (via an include) was included twice, the text/headers on the page were obscured, etc. The weird thing is, if I toggle to a different widow and come back, it then "fixes" itself and is fine. Similarly, if I even just scroll down a bit until the affected area is no longer displayed on the screen, and then scroll back up, it's fine!! I had a co-worker with the same browser/version check the page as well, and it was fine for her. Obviously the problem lies on my system. Also, there's nothing wrong in the source code. I've never encountered this problem before. Any ideas? Thanks!
