RE: (ot) barcodes and mobile sites

2014-04-23 Thread David Phelan

The barcode is an image that evaluates to a string when read so you could:

1) store the string in the database and generate the barcode image on the fly
2) generate the barcode image, store it on the file system and store the path
in the database
3) generate the barcode image and store it in a BLOB

Hi Dave and all,

Tried posting this earlier, not sure it has gone through, here I go again:

Excuse the dumb question, I fully understand how the QR code and reader works,
I've built a number of QR solutions, where I use it to direct users to PDFs and
videos resources, activities per file are stored in the database, as you can
capture url values.

I've never used barcode before, how does it work as far as storing info into a
database? Especially when using those physical barcode readers or even apps

Many thanks,

If you're using the standalone barcode scanner app on your phone, most
of these other barcode formats will just show you the number they
contain. But custom apps can invoke the barcode scanner app, read the
number, and do something with it, like Google Shopper does.

Re: (ot) barcodes and mobile sites

2014-04-11 Thread Bryan Stevenson

Thanks for that Cameronand I'd love to hear more about what you're
up to as well ;-)

I did see a mention on Git (a link from the article Dave provided
yesterday) that some mobile app scanners allow you to configure a URL to
send the user to when a barcode is scanned. It uses a few placeholders
in the configured URL to replace with values from the scanner (barcode
format and the value scanned). So that essentially makes a QR out of an
old style barcode (in terms of sending user to a URL)

I may be stuck with traditional barcodes as the things to be scanned
already exist and I think (need to confirm) they are old school

To make this more fun - this happens on fishing vessels at sea ;-)

It looks like there is hope for something like this.

Cheers

This company has already chosen iOS as their platform of choice and we have
already told them they should expect to buy bluetooth scanning hardware.
I'm still going to play with the mobile site though and see if I can make
anything at all work. The project is still at the very start.

WWDC is also in June, the theoretical middle of this project. I haven't
been paying attention enough to know what may be released around that time
but I've always thought it's feasible that a QR Code input could be built
into Safari eventually, someday. I think that's a very long shot, but it's
in the back of my mind since this project started.

If you're building a native app on Android, you can certainly do this
with the ZXing library:
https://github.com/zxing/zxing

I don't think you'll be able to do that with a mobile site, though.

Bryan-

We are scoping out a project with similar requirements right now. The goal
would be that QR Codes could be used to help in data entry in a form that
has other fields in it too. It's for an stock/inventory management app.

I don't know if this helps you out at all because I haven't tested anything
yet to see what's possible, but we're hoping to build the QR codes as URLs
so that any "outside" QR scanning app hitting the code would send the user
to an appropriate deep link in the mobile site for that item.

Additionally, we hope to eventually embed QR scanning in either a mobile
site or app that would allow the user to "scan item(s) now" as part of a
larger process. In this case, we would like to intercept the QR string
within our app and disassemble it in the app (instead of redirecting the
user to the URL). In that case we would just pull out the URL params to
populate the form and disregard the fact that it's a web link.

I think that this should be possible in theory but I don't know yet what's
possible within a mobile website vs an app. In a native app I am sure it's
possible, the mobile site I am still unsure.

We are also investigating handheld BlueTooth QR scanners that may be able
to send the inputs to the app as a string - simulating keyboard entry.
We've had success with connecting up credit card swipers and 2d barcode
scanners this way in the past so I am hopeful this will be no different.

I would be interested in hearing about anything you find.

Well, if they're regular barcodes, the Android barcode reader might be
able to read them just fine. I know that I've used mine to read

Thanks Dave.not exactly, but that does spark another idea. Any idea
if the URL can specify URL params as well (I assume so...just have not
really used them much)??

This is a data entry application running via a mobile site. In the
middle of filling in a form, the user may need to scan a bar/QR code and
the value behind the code must be placed in a form prompt (text input).
They will need to scan multiple codes.

It may not have to be that direct (i.e. perhaps they do all their
scanning and all values are stored in a list - then the user could
copy/cut that list and paste into the web form prompt).

As I saidthe bridge (getting data from scanner to web app) is the
part I am struggling with - just looking for options and brainstorming

Your mention of QRs opening URLs made me wonder if I could have the web
app collect each scan one at a time and store temporarily. The idea
being each QR passes the numeric value I would be after as a URL param -
then repeat until all scanning done.

I should mention that the things to be scanned may already exist and
only have barcodes and not QR (although in another area of my work that
QR idea might just work).

Anywooo...there is some more clarity (I hope)

Thanks again for the feedback Dave

(ot) barcodes and mobile sites

2014-04-10 Thread Bryan Stevenson

Hi All,

I'm just looking into the possible methods/options for scanning a
barcode (or QR) using a mobile device (phone/tablet) and making the
scanned value (in this case a number) available to a web app running via
a mobile site (i.e. stuff scanned value in text input)?

It's the bridge from whatever does the scanning (I assume any of the
widely available barcode scanning apps in the various app marketplaces)
and the web app that has me wondering what to do.

I'm sure this would be easier with a mobile app (Android/iOS/etc)
instead of a web app in a mobile site - but heywhy do anything the
easy way ;-)

Another option for the scanning might be to use actual scanner hardware
attached to the mobile device (if such things exist and would work with
the most popular mobile OSs)

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Cheers

Can't you just use a barcode font with cfimage or directly on the page
as a webfont?

What kind of barcodes, exactly? QR codes? UPC? The zxing library is a free,

that's probably what I'd try first.

Printing barcodes

2011-11-11 Thread Keith McGee

I am creating 4 x 4 labels pdf files, storing them on the server, printing them
to a zebra label printer, then deleting the files. I'm using a window font; Bar
code 39 a, bar code 39 a hr, up to f. The program is creating the labels fine
with the bar code.

when I print them with the label prints with out the bar
code.

But if I open the pdf and print it manual the bar code prints.

Any Ideas?

Bryan,

Yep, I am still trying to get my hands around the various Adobe products and
their flavors, but I think this is what you want:
http://www.adobe.com/products/server/barcodedpaperforms/indepth.html

You can create a 2d barcode that contains the XML associated with the data
in a form. As a user moves from field to field in a form making changes,
you'll see the barcode change. And when done you can scan the barcode to
extract the data.

Hey All,

I've been looking at Adobe Acrobat Pro to use in the creation of PDF forms
(didgital forms which allow user input...not paper forms to be printed).

The piece of functionality I can't see in the docs is the ability to add a
unique number or barcode to the page based on the user's entries in the form
fields.

THE FLOW I IMAGINE:
1) user fills in form
2) user hits a button to genetrate a file number or barcode
3) that file number or barcode is added to the page (and stays there until
the user hits the buttton again...even between saves)

I'm sure this is possible, but not sure if the Adobe tools allow for
thisor if I need to bark up another tree?

TIA

Everything you need to do the encoding is right there on the link you
provided. The last step would be to use an underlying Java library in CF to
generate a JPEG of the output for you which can then be embedded in any
document format you like, or pay someone to write the generator for you.

RE: Generating BarCodes in CF

2005-04-05 Thread Burns, John D
Well, since it's more than just a font, your problem does sound like it
requires the specialized program. I'm not sure where to send you from
here. Just search for a program that you can run from your desktop
(perhaps command-line based) and get that working and then it's easy to
move it over to CF.

John,

I do indeed have the font(s) installed in Word. And yes, I can type
certain characters and it will display in somewhat of a barcode font.

However, I do know, from however much research I have done this far, is
that a series of binary strings are necessary to display the barcode
correctly.
I know this because I download the evaluation versions of some of the
software that does the 2D barcode conversion. Those are all blackbox
implementations though. I need something that I can invoke via CF via a
webapp, and then embed in my documents.

You cannot just type "Hello world" in word and apply the font and get
the correct barcode. You will get something in the barcode font, but
not the desired result. "Hello world" has to go through a conversion
into a binary string based on a specific formula. That string has to be
entered into word or ActivePDF or Adobe Acrobat or Notepad, and then the
font can be applied to it to get the proper bar code.

The reason I know this is because there are websites out there which do
an on-the-fly conversion to the 2-D barcode and show you what the result
is supposed to look like.

Cheers,
Ali

If you can install the font on your PC and open word and write some text
in that font to get the result you want, then you can do it on the
server.

Perhaps the reason you were seeing wingdings when you viewed their
formula output is because you don't have the required fonts installed?

If there is indeed a font that you can type and the font outputs the
barcode (like in Word) then you can just use CF to call ActivePDF and
send over the characters necessary to create the output and tell
ActivePDf to use that font (which must be installed on the server to
work correctly).

John,

Yes, it is available in a font. The font is called PDF417, I believe.
This sounds like the direction I may want to go in. Can you elaborate
on how I could do that?

We have ActivePDF installed on our server, could I do it using that?

However, we can't just take plain text and apply the font to it. The
plain text gets encoded into a series of binary "words" I believe. (I
think it's the right terminology a binary string of 16 bits). Some
guy came up with a formula that does the encoding. The formula itself
is open source, and there's a SourceForge project out there, that claims
to convert a text string to the 2D barcode. I downloaded it and ran
their sample app, and all it does is convert the text into WingDings.

That was one dead-end.
Next, I found the website of some French dude that posted the entire
formula for creating 2D barcodes. But since I'm not a PhD in Discrete
Math, nor in Computer Science, it was way above my
understanding/abilities/comprehension.
Otherwise, I believe we may be able to use Coldfusion to generate the
barcode if we can decipher the formula.

Here's the guy's website:
http://grandzebu.net/informatique/codbar-en/pdf417.htm

He too claims to have a tool to encode plain text into a barcode. I
downloaded it and ran it and all it did was convert my text into
WingDings.
So I don't know how much we can trust the formula he posts. However it
looks confusing enough to be trusted :S

Thanks,
Ali

RE: Generating BarCodes in CF

2005-04-05 Thread Ali Awan
Thanks Andy,

But you are too late,j/k :P Somebody already suggested that.

And that is actually one of the first places I looked before posting to
CF-Talk. Unfortunately, FusionZone is limited in the Barcoding Symbologies
that they encode. I'm looking for an app that converts to the 2D
symbologies, mainly PDF417. To my knowledge FusionZone doesn't support
that.

The ones that I have found which do support it, are so far 2: Morovia and
TEC-IT. However those are mainly desktop apps written in VB. One of them
has an ActiveX control, but they don't explain how to access it, and what
methods/variables etc, are available. Even then, that's only half the
battle, the second part is how to programmatically embed the info I need
into a word doc.

These were the same kinds of problems that we faced as CF developers before
ActivePDF and MX7, when we tried to generate PDF's on the fly.

I was looking for some Coldfusion-friendly apps, or a method by which I
could write an app myself in CF.

Thanks,
Ali

RE: Generating BarCodes in CF

2005-04-05 Thread Ali Awan
John,

I do indeed have the font(s) installed in Word. And yes, I can type certain
characters and it will display in somewhat of a barcode font.

However, I do know, from however much research I have done this far, is that
a series of binary strings are necessary to display the barcode correctly.
I know this because I download the evaluation versions of some of the
software that does the 2D barcode conversion. Those are all blackbox
implementations though. I need something that I can invoke via CF via a
webapp, and then embed in my documents.

You cannot just type "Hello world" in word and apply the font and get the
correct barcode. You will get something in the barcode font, but not the
desired result. "Hello world" has to go through a conversion into a binary
string based on a specific formula. That string has to be entered into word
or ActivePDF or Adobe Acrobat or Notepad, and then the font can be applied
to it to get the proper bar code.

The reason I know this is because there are websites out there which do an
on-the-fly conversion to the 2-D barcode and show you what the result is
supposed to look like.

Cheers,

Thanks,
Ali

RE: BARCODES in CF

2004-10-05 Thread Blaine Korte
Looks like I'm going to be using this one. it's the only one that's
impressed me.

I also have to print it out - in fact, its going to be dynamically inserted
into PDF's, which means it will need to be high res.  The barcodeZONE tag
looks like the only one out there that I can _easily_ resize and have it
print out and scan perfect.

Looks like it will be definitely worth the money.

Another one I have run across in my wonderings.  We have not needed
ColdFusion barcode generation yet, so I have not tried this, or any others.

BARCODES in CF

2004-10-05 Thread Ciliotta, Mario
Hi,

Does anyone know of any good barcode generators that work with CFMX.  I am
looking for something either in CF or JAVA.  If it is open source that would
be great but if it is a commercial app that is fine too.

I basically need to print barcodes on a label - I am not sure what style of
barcode yet but I believe that it will be code39 or 2 of 5.

Thanks
Mario

Antony answered this, Tried it. Worked with F8. :-)
There are programs that do this job for _any_ application if you need
to use an F key reserved by the OS or environment.
Keyboard listeners/Program launchers.. google for that stuff.

Well .. yes, DynAPI (http://dynapi.sourceforge.net/dynapi/)
(A DHTML JavaScript API) has a keypress library which can
be loaded on it's own.

Here it is extracted
http://www.scottandrew.com/dhtml/docs/keypress.html

(DynAPI is very quiet these days :-)

Re: 2 questions: hot keys and barcodes

2003-03-19 Thread Antony Sideropoulos
Hi Eric

>Setup a key in Windows to goto a web address...anyone know how?

If I understand correctly, you can try this:

- Define a favorite for the web address
- Right-click the favorite in the Favorites menu, and choose properties
(If you can't do this, find your favorites folder via explorer, and then
right-click>properties
- On the Web-Document tab, there is a Shortcut key field.
- Click in this field, and press a key - the shortcut is automatically
prepended with Ctrl+Alt, giving you a three key shortcut key eg Ctrl+Alt+H
- Click in the field and press F1 for more information.

Apparently, you can use the short cut key from any application that does not
already use that combo - this is actually a really good feature.

(This is one the benefits from having IE integrated into the OS...Who needs
competition when MS can come up with this by themselves?)

Two separate things...one, want to config a f key to open a browser window.

Second, we have had no problems doing the barcoding...but question has been
raised if we can scan a code, which triggers a javascript event, or the
like...

What kind of commands do you wish to 'force' ?
A barcode scanner just acts as a keybord device (depending
on what type you get)

so if the barcode (depending on the encoding of course)
has some 'commands' you want to send to the browser
then ...

yes it can be done.

yeah there are some pretty cool java libraries here:

I used the libraries in a java application, but you should be able to use
them MX.

SOT: 2d barcodes

2002-07-08 Thread Samuel Farmer

All--

Has anyone any experience/advice with printing 2d barcodes? Our process
would be to retrieve info from database, put in 2d format and then print.
Would be using CFMX (and some 3rd party software) if that helps.

Thanks,

Sam
