Chalk up what you've spent on it as a loss and ditch it immediately.
If you really want a CF-based off-the-shelf packaged cart

with AC now is going to save you more money and frustration in the
long run than it's going to cost you to write it off and go with
 something worth using.

This is that one product that was SO BAD that I promised not only

someone talk about it I would make absolutely sure that they knew how
low my opinions of the software and the company actually are. The
single year-long project I was on working with AC was a complete
nightmare filled with hours of talking to the least helpful and least
professional support personnel with whom I've ever had the bad
 fortune to speak.

Of course, that's just my opinion...

The reason was that AC treats the two as distinct domains, instead of 2
subdomains from the same domain. The store key only works for one unless
you have one specially made that works with both.

set up is we have the site and a secure site (one is www.name.net the other is
secure.name.net) The store keys apparently only work for one domain and will
not work with this configuation. The real stupid thing is that int he admin
page for the store, you can change the url for the secure site for your store.
If you can specify a different url for the secure site, why would this only
work with one domain? What a way to start a monday morning, huh? GRR I
think I will join you on your crusade to let people know how much of a POS this
package is. When i talked to thier customer support on Friday about my
dissatisfaction with thier tech support policies, all I got was attitude and I
think the quote was something like this is the model we use...we have been
doing this for years and we are not going to change. Great way to keep
customers, huh?

Hhmby this do you mean that the two are on different servers? It's hard to
tell for sure from what you write here, but if that's the case, it certainly
would be a problem for most shopping carts, since you can't generally share
session information between two servers. Otherwise, I'm surprised this would be
a problem...it's pretty typical particularly in a shared environment for the
SSL to use a different domain. But of course, I can't really speak for another

My only concern with CFWebstore is that since it is done in fusebox, how well
would that work when the rest of the site is not fusebox? I personally love
fusebox...but unfortuantely do not have the aility to redo the entire site with
the methodology (I wish i could though...it owuld make life a lot easier
hehehe). I was looking at Cartweaver and I will be recommending that we go
with that and dump Able Commerce. AC is good if you want just what they have
out of the box...which is a pretty good cart, but if you want to integrate it
into your site...outside of getting raped on the tech support costs...good
luck. I was able to do some customization, but they were pretty painful
changes that took a long time to develop. We also found out htat we can buy a
development license for our dev server *laugh* What kind of crap is that? I
have never heard of having to buy a lcense ($195 at that...)to run a product on
a development server. I think these guys need to pass on whatever they are
smoking...must be some good stuff. *aggrivated*

Re: Able Commerce

2006-07-24 Thread Mary Jo Sminkey
My only concern with CFWebstore is that since it is done in fusebox,
how well would that work when the rest of the site is not fusebox?

As long as you drop it into its own directory, it's not a problem. I have lots
of clients that run it this way. I certainly don't expect everyone to run out
and recode their sites into Fusebox! For an example, see www.usdaa.com.
Everything on this site was done prior to adding CFWebstore to handle the
store. It runs from its own directory, and is completely separate from the rest
of the code.

They both point to the same directory. I didn't st it up, but I have
to work with it. The previous cart worked just fine with this.

Ah, then you're right, there's no reason why that should not work.

RE: Able Commerce Guru's?

2000-10-04 Thread Stephen Moretti

Will,

 Hai!

Any one out there know how to add text boxes to a product; for example
shoe size that would populate the custom fields?

"Yeah, you have to add 'options' (which has to be enabled first in
Administrator), then you can assign prices to those options. So one set of
options would be Shoe-Size or Colour - and they can be given different
prices if needs be. Its in the online manual."

The above is a quote from an ICQ from a friend who knows AbleCommerce pretty
well

Hope that helps.

Regards

Stephen

RE: Able Commerce Guru's?

2000-10-04 Thread Larry Juncker

Go into the ProdWiz? file that you are using for that store. If you are
using custom wizards, this file will be located under your store install in
the wizards directory.

Look in your admin portion of the site and see which prodwiz you are using
for this store, make a copy of it and add the copy as a new wizard and then
change the code as needed.

The customfield are already defined, you just have to edit how they are
viewed.

I need to have an email option (trying to talk them out of this) along with
a fax option for submitting orders. The email will be wrapped in a PGP tag.
I'm too new at Able commerce to know if a wizard will do the trick. So I'm
assuming I need to modify the app.

You just need to have unique wizards or are you trying to dulicate the whole

Has anyone had experience using able commerce and customizing for a
particular customer. What I need is to have a separate directory for
program files for one customer while using the original able commerce
program files for everyone else. Everytime I follow the directions to copy
the files and change the mapping for my one store, all the stores stop
working. I've been on the phone with able commerce, and so far they've
given me nothing but the brush off.

So how do you set up a store with it's own program files?

RE: Able Commerce Help

2000-05-15 Thread Russell, Bonnie

yes, I've followed their directions in the system administrators
documentation, and that's how my troubles began.

I need to have a complete copy of the program files since we'll be modifying
them slightly for one customer. When we bought this package, that was one
of the requirements and we have the developers edition.

I've been all through their site and read most of their documentation. I
have to admit, I'm the first at our company to actually use the able
commerce, but as long as I don't change any mappings, there hasen't been any
problems.

This was supposed to be a 3 day project which is now going on 3 weeks and
the customer is not happy and I'm getting to the point where ulcers look
like welcome relief compared to the stress they're putting us under.

Is there a particular FAQ that you're referring to?

Thanks for the info
Bonnie

What does "fusebox like" mean - does it mean it conforms totally to
fusebox, or
it conforms to your interpretation of fusebox, or to your intepretation of
what
fusebox should be?

I'm sure on the flexibility point we are the winner, as far as price goes

of the company. IBM, Microsoft, OpenMarket, and Intershop hate
running into us, our product is much easer to get started with than any
of
those products that offer "similar" levels of features and COMPANY
SUPPORT.

I think that applies to most CF based products of this type - that is the
strength of CF. As for support - you are making the somewhat biased
assumption
that only you provide it.

The ONLY reason I originally posted was because the copyright and patent
laws of our country suck, but our country's ethics don't?Go try to
"knock off" a song, book or corporate logo...etc.

It is obvious to me that the reason you have gone to such extremes to
defend
your product is because you are seriously concerned about the competition.
If
you were not concerned about the competition, and your product stood on its
own
as unsurpassable, you wouldn't have to. You keep mentioning
AuctionBuilder -
this discussion is not about AuctionBuilder it is about Able Commerce -
how
about addressing the concerns of your potential customers?

 the company?

It says to me that they recognise the good qualities of your product, whilst
also recognising the defficiencies as they perceive them to be - and apparently
others perceive them to be as well. If they can address those issues at 1/10 of
the price - then good luck to them I say.

If CF WebShop does everything AbleCommerce does, is more flexible, and 1/10 of
the price for open source - where would_you_put your eCommerce platform
dollars?

We pride ourselves at AbleCommerce in providing original solutions to tough
e-business issues. Look at our new AuctionBuilder product to see where our
 new products are headed,

The disucssion is not about Auction products, it is about eStore products.

BEFORE you drop your money on the table.
AbleCommerce Builder is a proven product, with proven support and a proven
 company behind it.

That as may be - but it doesn't mean that you can be arrogant or complacent
about it. Being first to market, or market leader isn't always good enough
unless you are M$ or Inte$. Over here at least we have a saying - "the customer
is always right" - which means that you should listen to your customers and act
acordingly. If your customers say that your product is difficult to customise,
too expensive for open source etc., - then you should listen to them.

I for one don't have a problem with AbleCommerce, and I certainly do recognise
its significance and standing, but that does not mean you are unique in that.
Instead of telling us how great your product is, how about addressing the issues
of flexibility and price?

Adrian Cooper.

If CF WebShop does everything AbleCommerce does, is more flexible, and 1/10
of
the price for open source - where would_you_put your eCommerce platform
dollars?

We pride ourselves at AbleCommerce in providing original solutions to
tough
e-business issues. Look at our new AuctionBuilder product to see where
our
 new products are headed,

The disucssion is not about Auction products, it is about eStore products.

BEFORE you drop your money on the table.
AbleCommerce Builder is a proven product, with proven support and a
proven
 company behind it.

That as may be - but it doesn't mean that you can be arrogant or complacent
about it. Being first to market, or market leader isn't always good enough
unless you are M$ or Inte$. Over here at least we have a saying - "the
customer
is always right" - which means that you should listen to your customers and
act
acordingly. If your customers say that your product is difficult to
customise,
too expensive for open source etc., - then you should listen to them.

I for one don't have a problem with AbleCommerce, and I certainly do
recognise
its significance and standing, but that does not mean you are unique in
that.
Instead of telling us how great your product is, how about addressing the
issues
of flexibility and price?

Adrian Cooper.

The ONLY reason I originally posted was because the copyright and patent
laws of our country suck, but our country's ethics don't?Go try to
"knock off" a song, book or corporate logo...etc.

Are you implying that CFWebstore lifted code directly from your product or
are you simply upset that they offer a viable product that offers "similar"
features, though perhaps not as extensive, at a significantly lower price?

I'm really just curious having never used either apart from checking out
eval versions. I will tell you, though, that the implications behind your
comments leave me with a negative impression of AbleCommerce unless you have
some specific claim to make regarding the other product...it just sounds
like sour grapes directed at a smaller competitor.

I take it you've never heard the phrase "inspired by." Songs, books, and
logos are all derivative. Whether you incorporate an idea from a work or
deliberately avoid it, all songs, books, and logos have pieces taken from
multiple sources, even if unintentionally. There is very little new ground
to cover in any of these fields EXCEPT which sources new work draws from.
Of course, in those fields it's a sign of a good work to have someone draw
from your ideas. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, remember?

As a writer, I can tell you that when you write there are certain things
that you do. You present work in a format appropriate to the subject
matter, in language appropriate to the subject matter, in a way that you
think appeals to the intended reader. Applying the same theory to this
discussion, this other company has drawn from your company's ideas and made
what they think are improvements. They make these improvements by drawing
from other sources. They have used a format that suits the intention of the
product and fits the intended user. If your product does the same thing and
has the same intended user, they are likely to be similar. That isn't theft
of ideas, that's completely natural. People can call it a knock-off, but
knock-offs don't include improvements. They probably call it a knock-off
because it seems similar. If you have a problem with this, I have to wonder
why. It's not like they went in and stole your source code or it would be
against the contracts they were under when they got the source, and
therefore illegal. Open source doesn't mean you can take code out of it and
incorporate it into a product. They built upon a good idea that already
existed, but they added to the idea. And you sound very threatened by that.

While your AuctionBuilder product may be very valuable, if you are
threatened by AbleCommerce competition, that is the sign of a problem with
the product. While focusing your company's efforts on this auction product
and '*away* from AbleCommerce, which is what you are implying, AbleCommerce
will lose technological ground. Instead of resting on your laurels, you
could innovate with AbleCommerce-- add new features, make it more flexible,
incorporate better techniques to get the same job done. It might delay the
release of AuctionBuilder, but in the meantime, you wouldn't be losing
ground. Allaire certainly didn't stop at ColdFusion version 1 or even
version 2.

Everyday people decide on new things to do on their websites; if your
product can't keep up you will lose ground in the market and have only
yourself to blame.

The fusebox "like" AuctionBuilder product is ONE example of the future of
our products, which we are releasing many this year.

What does "fusebox like" mean - does it mean it conforms totally to fusebox, or
it conforms to your interpretation of fusebox, or to your intepretation of what
fusebox should be?

I'm sure on the flexibility point we are the winner, as far as price goes we
have set it FAR below all of our "honest competitors" and yet still have
 enough

Define "honest".

margin in it to allow for support, Research Development and exspansion
of the company. IBM, Microsoft, OpenMarket, and Intershop hate
running into us, our product is much easer to get started with than any of
those products that offer "similar" levels of features and COMPANY SUPPORT.

I think that applies to most CF based products of this type - that is the
strength of CF. As for support - you are making the somewhat biased assumption
that only you provide it.

The ONLY reason I originally posted was because the copyright and patent
laws of our country suck, but our country's ethics don't?Go try to

It is obvious to me that the reason you have gone to such extremes to defend
your product is because you are seriously concerned about the competition. If
you were not concerned about the competition, and your product stood on its own
as unsurpassable, you wouldn't have to. You keep mentioning AuctionBuilder -
this discussion is not about AuctionBuilder it is about Able Commerce - how
about addressing the concerns of your potential customers?

Adrian Cooper.
