They have a very robust sms gateway.

Thanks, I took a look at their pricing page and LOLed when I saw this...

Q-sms offers the cheapest price in Nigeria and one of the most competitive
globally...

The Nigeria mention makes them immediately suspect in my mind, but I suppose
there must be legitimate businesses there too, right? Hopefully they won't
switch out my messages for offers to transfer millions into the recipients
account... ha!

Have you used them to send to mobile numbers on US carriers? A few places
I've spoken to have said that we would need to apply for our own short code
to send to US recipients, others have said we can send through theirs but
only to certain carriers. It all seems to be more confusing than it should
be.

Well, believe it or not, i have used them to send messages to the U.S. Their
delivery was instant. I thought the same way you do, but when i decided to use
them, i got results and its cool to pay for results, these days.

Re: SMS messages

2011-02-11 Thread Mike Kear

I had to set up my first SMS application about 3 years ago, and I was
busy looking for Australian SMS providers, when another colleague said
to try an English company he'd been using. I too was skeptical about
using an overseas company, but he assured me that it didnt matter.
So we had a race.We sent SMS messages from my phone to his phone,
using the normal 'two thumbs and press 'send' method, and using his
web site to another phone. We pressed his enter key and my send
button together, and time after time, the web site would win.

He was sending a XML packet to the English SMS server, they were
routing the message through any number of other providers around the
world (depending on where the cheapest carriers were on this day) and
eventually ending up beside us here on the next desk in Australia.

It turns out that SMS providers treat SMS messages like a commodity.
They buy in huge numbers, and make a margin by selling to you and me
and our clients in smaller volumes. So the routing today will quite
likely be different to how it was yesterday because of the pricing.

Of course there are plenty of issues to check on when searching for a
provider, but when it comes to SMS messaging, location doesnt matter
for performance reasons. This is rather similar to knowing that it
doesnt really matter much where you locate your web servers
geographically, as long as they are provided with enough bandwidth and
set up properly.

no you don't 100% need a short code to *send* SMS to the US.

like most everything else, you get what you pay for when it comes to SMS
vendors.

you might look at HSLsms.com or Dialogue.net, know both of these work with cf's
gateway are fairly reliable.

if you're on cf9 only want to send or receive SMS (which often can be a
cheaper service), look for vendors that offer that. prior to cf9, cf's SMS
gateway was transceiver binding only.

Voxeo. They have been on an acquisition tear recently, picking up
Tropo and a couple others that I forget. As a result, they have a
pretty wide variety of plans and platforms of which one will likely
fit your needs. I use their traditional CCXML/VoiceXML platform for
outbound calling and they added SMS to it awhile back. I'll be
implementing it at work here soon. The new platforms they picked up
through acquisition look nice. Lots of REST-based calls for voice
calls, sms, IM, etc though not necessarily with the same SLA found in
their traditional platform.

 1. How do I install the jar file on our server?

You need to upload the jar file to the server, and place it on ColdFusion's
classpath (/{cfroot}/lib/ will work).

 2. The code you provided looks good and simple (which is what I'm looking
for!). Will it work with the OpenSMPP jar file, or will I need to change
the methods to ones that are in OpenSMPP?

The example code I provided was for OpenMarkets / Simplewire's API. If you
are using the SMPP.jar you will need to use it's API. There is a sample
java application at
http://opensmpp.logica.com/CommonPart/Download/javatest_1_1/smpptest_full.zi
p that you can look at for reference to what you need to do to utilize it.
I have not worked directly with the OpenSMPP API so I can't help to much
there, but if I can get some time over the weekend I'll see if I can
translate that java test app into CF.

Good luck!

I have been successfull in creating objects from the SMPP.JAR classes with my

I'm still looking for an example of anyone who has done this in coldfusion mx

I have been doing this same thing with a product called TCPClient from
www.intrafoundation.com. this program is a COM Object which gives
Coldfusion the ability to communicate with all kids of TCP protocols.

The Cell Phone Providers have and operate an SNPP Gateway which is
using the TAP Protocol which they do not want to admit to as this cuts
out the SMC's but if you ask the right question to the right person
you can get the right information.

If someone is savy with Linux they can install a program called QPAGE,
a 2400Baud Modem to create their own SMC then the Coldfusion
application would talk TCP to this machine to send pages on demand.

This is the same thing which I have been doing for Indiana K-12 School
Corporations for the past 5 years and my application sends out just
under 2 Million text messages each year.

sms.setSubscriberID(subscriberID); // SMSC ID
sms.setSubscriberPassword(subscriber_password); // SMSC password
sms.setDestinationAddr(+#destAddress#); // user phone number
sms.setSourceAddr(SMS.ADDR_TYPE_NETWORK, sourceAddress); // phone

sms.setMsgText('Sending you a message!');
sms.submit();
/cfscript
