I'm glad you got things worked out. I've had to call VivioTech support a
few times myself and they always answer the phone quickly and are helpful.
The managed support is worth it when you are trying to troubleshoot a
problem and for the handful of my customers who are hosted there, I always
suggest that they get the managed plan.

They have even helped me once or twice with I didn't have a managed plan,
but I asked super nice knowing they didn't have to help me.

Yeah they are really great guys! And $10 for a full month of manage support is
a STEAL. :) I’ve used it on a month by month basis a couple times when I’ve
needed to.

Very disappointed in Viviotech

2014-03-31 Thread Mike K

So I signed up with Viviotech - got a VPS. Started setting up my first
hosting space after reading the documentation - had a question about why
I was getting an error message that didnt seem to be covered by the
documentation anywhere.

Rang Viviotech.

Got a jerk that told me that since I didn't have managed support, he
wouldn't answer my question, and nor would he tell me where in the
documentation I could find out about the error message.

That guy should be sacked.

I understand about paying for support, and I understand they dont provide
24/7 support for nothing, but I would have thought a new customer might
have been able to at least get a little bit of handholding at first. I
would have thought I'd have been able to get a LITTLE bit of help setting
up my first site so I understand their concepts.

That is the traditional ARP attack in which the request is broadcasted and
the reply has the IP address. That has the consequence of redirecting
normal, local traffic to the spoofed address.
That does nothing to explain how you flood ARP requests to an IP address.
ARP runs on ethernet, not on IP, so it can not have an IP address as a
destination, only an ethernet address.

Re: Viviotech?

2014-01-29 Thread Jordan Michaels

Apologies. I just clarified this with one of our engineers. In the
process of identifying the issue our engineers performed packet dumps at
various locations within our network. In one of the packet dumps 65% of
the packets that were captured were ARP requests. So, whether what our
engineer said as unclear, or I simply misunderstood him; either way
there was a miscommunication, and I sincerely apologize for that. I did
confirm again that the target was a Chase-owned IP address, but figuring
out the details of what was being attacked wasn't our focus. We simply
wanted to stop it.

Jordan Michaels

This used to be true but thankfully it's no longer the case. Vivio's
VOIP system now has backup POTS lines that are used if the VOIP trunk
ever becomes inaccessible. If the POTS lines are all busy, you get a
busy signal - which is what happened today.

I was on the phone with Vivio. The claim there was or is some sort
of DDOS against one or more of the sites hosted there.

A 0-day (previously unknown) exploit was used against the Kloxo control
panel to upload malicious php files to the kloxo default site. Those
files were then hit remotely and caused the exploited servers to send
massive amounts of ARP requests off to an IP belonging to Chase bank.

Thanks for pointing out this thread so we could explain!

Jordan Michaels

This used to be true but thankfully it's no longer the case. Vivio's
VOIP system now has backup POTS lines that are used if the VOIP trunk
ever becomes inaccessible. If the POTS lines are all busy, you get a
busy signal - which is what happened today.

I never did trust Chase! :D

SOT: Eclipse RDS to VivioTech stuck at Contacting Server

2012-02-18 Thread Michael E. Carluen

I am finally moving from Homesite to Eclipse. I installed
Eclipse/CFEclipse/AdobeCF8Extension (with RDS) on both my Windows and Mac
machines.

Everything seems to work, except that when I try to RDS connect to my VivioTech
server, it only displays the Connecting Server... icon, and never shows the
server's file/directory tree.

Any suggestions on where I should check to fix it?

Thanks.

Ah sorry, misread. RDS (not RDP) communicates via port 80, so that's not
likely the issue.

However, I might add that enabling RDS for a production server is an

I've used a viviotech VPS for some time now, actually I have a couple of them
over there. Whenever I have a problem, they are quick to respond, and the
customer service vs other (larger) companies is night and day. I highly
recommend them to everybody I know who is looking for a CF Host.

Plus they support railo and openBD. You can get a VPS for 20 bucks a month -
why would you ever consider shared hosting again.

Rob,

we from Railo have a bigger project running at VivioTech and Jordan Michaels
has done a terrific job for us in setting up everything we needed. So I can
only tell from our experience with their support for dedicated servers. We
were and are VERY pleased so far. The team is very responsive and solved all
of our problems we had...

I had a disastrous time with Gearworx (poor server and worse support) and am

I'm a Vivio customer - I'll leave it up to you to decide if that makes
me biased or not.

I've had a good experience with them. The tech support know what they
are doing and people often get more help than one would expect on an
unmanaged server. Of course you can pay for a managed server too. I
definitely recommend them.

Re: Viviotech Outage

2008-01-04 Thread Aaron Roberson
Has anyone tried their pager? I don't have the number myself.

The company I'm doing contract work is very upset right now. They don't care
for ColdFusion to begin with but I twisted their arm and they barely
consented to my using it and setting up a server with Viviotech. For over a
week I've had other problems (one CFC caching bug in BlueDragon 7 and one
cfthread bug in BD 7.0.1) that had them pretty upset already. The other bugs
were not caused by Viviotech and they did help quite a bit so they are not
to blame for that, just that one thing after another after another has not
helped me in my fight for CFML.

I'm starting to get a little concerned as well.

It's probably not weather related. My guess is there's a physical connection
with their bandwidth--either their lines were cut (which I've seen done by
construction crews) or a problem with their bandwidth provider.)

Could be lots of reasons, but I figure since their phone lines are down too,
it's probably a physical infrastructure problem.

That's just a guess though, I have no relationship to Viviotech at all.

The question begs to be asked, do they have backup generators in case of
power outage? It has been quite some time, I realize that. The generators
may have ran for a while but the outage could have outlasted them. I'm
giving them the benefit of the doubt because they truly are a great company
and deserve that much.

Re: Viviotech Outage

2008-01-04 Thread Ejaz Khan
I googled Jordan and found his cell and another number, plus the
 viviotech number of 509-956-6050

toby dagenhart said the following on 1/4/2008 2:35 PM:
I've tried every number I have.

What phone numbers do you have? I don't have any for Viviotech and
wanted to call to see what's up but, of course, their site is down so
 I
can't go look up their phone numbers. :(

 --
 Best regards,

 Chris Montgomery

509-956-6050 is an air conditioning consultant's number. Who was happy to help
with viviotech's number . Other information that he gave me was that the whole
county is out of power because of storms there.
Then i managed to speak to Mark Keymer who confirmed that they don't have power
at all and they are tring to run as many servers on the generators as they can.
Once they have more power from generators, first system up will be their forum.
So keep watching it as that will be the start, then are the VPS's (most of
their customers will be happy that way) and then the rest.

Hope this helps everyone.

Any sites up other than viviotech's site?

So... viviotech seems to have lost their internet and their phone
service today... all the phone numbers I have for them that I tried
are giving me the old fast busy and the servers went offline about
an hour ago.

Anyone heard anything?

From the forum.

Due to a massive windstorm, we have had a power outage. For now the main
servers are up. Our Rose platform is up but the other platforms are still down.
All our dedicated servers are still down. We've purchased generators and we are
now working to get everything up and running on them. We will keep everyone
updated as soon as the situation changes.

Forum is up, for now. Still no posting on what is happening.

I'm just glad I'm not having to do the scrambling to get it fixed.
What a stress that is. I hope most of us have not been major pests and

Just having a backup generator helps if the power outage is quite local...
But if the power outage is a large grid it doesn't necessarily do the trick.
Every downstream device must also be protected. If you are using a tier one
provider that is usually the case (cross your fingers). Alos power outages
tend to bring on other issues - instability and hardware failures are more
common when power is fluxuating.

The question begs to be asked, do they have backup generators in case of
power outage? It has been quite some time, I realize that. The generators
may have ran for a while but the outage could have outlasted them. I'm
giving them the benefit of the doubt because they truly are a great company
and deserve that much.

Re: Anyone know what is up with Viviotech?

2007-08-31 Thread Mary Jo Sminkey
I have to admit, I don't even know the number unless the site is up.
 I
now get some response from Viviotech.net, but its been giving a BD
error for about the past 10 minutes...which I guess is progress from
no response at all. Still no response from my site or my email :(

Yeah, my site is back up too. I did grab the phone number from doing a Whois,
but I assumed as well from the BD error that they were working on it.

To be fair, the IP migration to their own ARIN block was announced on
8 May 2007; customer address allocations were made on 24 July 2007. I
was able to migrate all my servers and update DNS without an issue.
The power outage, however, was very unfortunate.

It may have been, but they did tell me that I needed to change my DNS
tonight (I don't use their DNS, my domains are registered through enom
and I just use their hosted DNS service)

Great responses guys, thanks so much.

I was also thinking another 256mb would be good if running mysql off it.

I never really use webmail anyway except if on holidays.

If anyone has anything to add...

I know there is a managed solution but wondering if I could toy with an
unmanaged one and set it up slowly myself. Would like to hear from anyone but
especially people who were in the same boat.

This is essentially where I was, although to be fair I had basic
Linux/UNIX experience when I started. The control panel lets you do
most things without needing to know Linux and the support forum will
help you do the rest.

 Rambling thoughts:

Is a basic package with 256mb enough for Bluedragon and mysql4/5 on a not too
busy niche commerce site? I thought much more memory would be needed.

I added 256MB just to be sure (since it costs stuff all), but here's
what top shows me right now:

Mem: 524288k av, 107468k used, 416820k free

So it's up to you. Don't forget you get a larger amount of swap space
to go with that physical memory.

 Is the line fast enough?

Seems good to me. Let me know: http://www.bifrost.com.au/blog/

Find much difference between BD and cfmx on linux? (I know the tag
 differences.)

Not much - the odd thing is different but all the important stuff
works as you would expect.

Are there problems monitoring BD in case it pegs the cpu? I know you can't
use cfmx monitors. What do people do? (I also don't want to be tied to a
computer 24hrs a day.) Big issue, small issue?

You could set up a cron job to do this kind of thing with shell
scripts. It could restart BD automatically etc.

What sort of monitoring does viviotech do for you themselves?

If something is obviously wrong with their hardware etc they get on
it. You can ask Jordan for more details if you need to (I imagine
he'll be responding here soon enough anyway).

Is it a full-time job for you now monitoring the site yourself and jumping in
to fix things all the time?

BD had a hiccup once. Updating the system is as hard as typing yum
update or using the control panel to do the same thing.

How difficult was it to set up such an environment there with a couple extra
very minor domains, ftp, email and such?

Control Panel does this for you - fill in a form and click a button.

Mysql backup has to be done manually? Do you also have to monitor mysql
 somehow?

You could schedule this. MySQL hasn't broken so far.

Do you install phpadmin to handle mysql, or something else? I'm not really a
 command-line guy.

I use the MySQL Windows GUI tools - I've given a specific IP access to
do this (via the control panel, btw). Navicat is good too.

Did you have to become BD/mysql/apache gurus just in order to use them for
the site, or left them as-is? I'm afraid I'd do this then find I'd never
tweaked some obvious setting which was causing big problems.

Nope, worked out of the box.

What do you do to ensure security?

You can set up firewall rules, schedule updates etc. It's set up quite
securely by default.

What were the biggest hurdles you faced going it alone?

N/A - I haven't looked back. After the service I got at the old
provider, I decided I'd do a better job. You can always ask for help
on the forums if you get stuck and Jordan often helps for free (and of
course you can pay for support if some simple advice is not going to
cut it).

Re: viviotech vps, non-admin linux newbie, rambling questions

2007-03-23 Thread Yves Arsenault
I'll chime in to give a couple of cents worth

I've got a root access VPS package, 512 RAM and BD.

I've been using this package since september 30th 2005.

There have been few glitches in that time.

As James mentions, you can do most things in the web admin panel. So you
don't really need much knowledge of Linux.

The forums are usually a good place to get some support and Jordan is
top notch.

You don't have to be a linux guru, but it's nice because if you want to
'customize' some aspects of your VPS (at some point), you have that freedom.

That's 2 cents worth.

Thanks,

Yves

Out of the box, the Viviotech VPSs are pretty easy to manage, if you are
happy with the default setup... I'm more of al inux person so I actually
configured and installed my own mail server (qmail) instead of using the
default (postfix)... but there's really no need for that.

Is a basic package with 256mb enough for Bluedragon and mysql4/5 on a not
too busy niche commerce site? I thought much more memory would be needed.

I run www.bobguiney.com on a VPS.. it's not a particularly active web
site... it's running BlueDragon and currently is only using 75MB of 256MB
physical memory, though the swap file is using 400MB of 512MB

I've never had a problem with response time on it though.

Find much difference between BD and cfmx on linux? (I know the tag
 differences.)

For basic CFML functionality, bluedragon is a pretty good substitute. I try
to make sure all my open source software runs on Bluedragon, and don't
usually have much trouble at all. CFMBB, imageCFC, CFOpenChat, BlogCFM,
etc...

Are there problems monitoring BD in case it pegs the cpu? I know you can't
use cfmx monitors. What do people do? (I also don't want to be tied to a

I don't use any monitors on the VPS and I don't think I've ever had a
problem with Bluedragon crashing. Current uptime is 131 days.

What sort of monitoring does viviotech do for you themselves?

On the unmanaged VPS, I'm not sure they do any monitoring, but you'd have to
ask them to be sure.

Is it a full-time job for you now monitoring the site yourself and jumping
in to fix things all the time?

I suppose that depends on your web site. I don't monitor bobguiney.com,
I've made very few changes to it over the years, and it quite happily runs
itself. The only thing I've really done to it in the last two years is post
his blog entries for him.

How difficult was it to set up such an environment there with a couple
extra very minor domains, ftp, email and such?

CP+ makes this all relatively easy.

Do you install phpadmin to handle mysql, or something else? I'm not really
 a command-line guy.

You can do that.. or get a GUI to run on your desktop and just grant
privileges (through CP+) allowing you to access MySQL remotely.

What were the biggest hurdles you faced going it alone?

Changing the initial setup from Postfix to Qmail... I'm pretty good with
qmail but figuring out how to get CP+ to itnegrate with qmail was a little
difficult.. lots of different settings. You should be fine with postfix
though.
