[cfaussie] CFCAMP Brisbane today - it was great!

2007-11-21 Thread Barry Beattie

highlights:

for me: Geoff Bowers with Farcry for work reasons

Robin Hilliard making CFInterface easier to understand (and why it's
good to use)

Adam Leyham - with how (and why) the future looks bright with CF (and
they're now taking feature requests for CF9)

Nick Watson spun me with how to make a Flex app with ColdFusion code,
as well as some cool insight into LCDS (very interesting tips!)

Andrew Spaulding helped making Flex easier to understand (and it looks
like I'm gonna be needing the Exchange stuff he showed us)

thanx guys for putting it on, esp Mark Blair

2007-11-21 Thread Barry Beattie

@MrBuzzy: you're sessions could be different. Besides, it's not much
more than what was on the wiki
@Dale: IIRC it was something like 85-90% of the registrations showed
up, plus a few late arrivals. Not as many heads as Sydney but then
again Bris is only a third of the size.

have fun today and I hope you're there now (8:30am Melb time) talking
to the guys and getting the extra tit-bits...

Barry,

I liked that session on Coldspring / Model-Glue, didn't you?

Overall, I think it was a great day, great people including those who
didn't present. Attendance is the key, so if your not there, the event
won't be on. So who are the stars of the show really?

Cheers

the people who made the effort to go IMHO - talked their boss into it

[cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Brisbane today - it was great!

2007-11-21 Thread David Beaumont

CFCamp in Brisbane yesterday was a great day!

Thanks to ALL those who participated.

In particular, thanks to the presenters who spent so much of their own
time resource preparing and for making the effort to present.
Thanks to Adobe for getting behind the event and making their reps
available. Thanks to the CFUG team for their great contribution.

I really hope that we can make this an annual event for CF'ers.

How can it be improved?

* Mailout and notification could be a bit better cause the
notification from Adobe didn't happen for me and many others as I
understand. (Visit: www.updateadobe.com )

* Add a bit more polish to the event handling on the day
(registration, name tags, starting times etc) but I guess this will
improve with time.

* Buscuits with the coffee... :-)

Cheers, DB.

[cfaussie] Re: Friday arvo O.T - thinking of giving up Apple and going back to Windows.

2007-11-21 Thread Scott Barnes
I'm on the verge of throwing in the Mac towel.. its nothing really specific
just that unless I'm using Adobe Products + iLife etc, the majority of my
time is spent in Windows Vista.. the one annoyance I have is the keyboard
layout vs windows etc.. like APPLE + C for copy? what the heck is wrong with
CTRL + C..

I know you can remap the keyboard but not all software inherits this...i now
have a MacBook Pro and an iMac so its a bitter pill to swallow :)

But .. i still make use of it on the road and thats what matters I guess :)

heck, if it's good enough for Scott Barnes to pick up a Mac (and open
a Mac.com http://mac.com/ account) then it can't be all bad.

Perhaps the question should be how many reasons does it take to give up a
 Mac?

In my case, sadly, just one.

Yes! Get rid of that useless Macbook Pro. In fact, I'll come over and
take it away for you personally :)

[cfaussie] Re: Friday arvo O.T - thinking of giving up Apple and going back to Windows.

2007-11-21 Thread Barry Beattie

Apple-C is Ctrl-C

Ctrl is yet another function-special key (more like the properties
key, RHS on a Win keyboard)

One thing I noticed when I got my Mac and then went on holidays with
it for a couple of months, picking up free Wi-Fi in Amsterdam or
internet cafe's all over Italy, storing and editing 6,000 photo's with
iPhoto, playing music, watching movies, was how unimportant the
operating system actually was, a point rammed home to me using Linux
Desktop on public machines all over Finland.

file system access, plug-n-play, drag'n'drop and the applications
themselves and it could be a new Amiga or Apricot or BeOS or anything
really - as long as it worked as I expected.

but then again, I didn't need to worry about hard-core use of the
video card for some Adobe apps or games ... like I do now, hence
starting the thread.

eh my 2c.

mind you, I still reckon Windows Explorer and Search pisses all over
Finder and Spotlight. Even Konqueror is better. but that's just my
workflow.

2007-11-21 Thread MrBuzzy

And we're done. Thanks to the organisers and presenters, it was an
excellent event. I'm sure others would agree. Peter bell's talk was
inspiring mark and robin's were great too. Now i'm scurrying home to
rewrite my apps :) thanks to all. Hopefully it's a yearly thing, or
better. Cheers.

[cfaussie] CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup

2007-11-21 Thread Dale Fraser
I can't understate the value of these events.

It's a way to learn, to meet people you might know from a list, catch with
regulars and engage new people.

I really enjoyed all the talks, it was a good mix of both CF8 and general
content.

The talks were all about 45 minutes, which I think is a good length, not too
long or short.

I know there are a lot of sleepers on CFAUSSIE who didn't attend and you
really missed out.

All that were there and put your hand up that you were on CFAUSSIE. I really
urge you to attend the End Of year ColdFusion User Group.

Steve Mark do a stellar job putting this together, and I will be talking
on CF8 Ajax features which is something every ColdFusion programmer needs to
learn and use.

Regards

Dale Fraser

[cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup

2007-11-21 Thread Andrew Scott

:-)

I am not a big fan of the CF8 Ajax features, sure for small
applications they bring some nice functionality. However the bigger
problem is that the technology is based on code that is now 2 years
old, and when the next version of CF is released I hope they patch
this technology (minor version of course).

However the binding options is extremely good:-)
