Daemon still have a healthy mix of Adobe ColdFusion and Railo amongst our
clients. Invariably new clients are on Railo, and many older ACF clients
are planning migration to Railo. While ACF remains an excellent platform,
Railo has parity where it matters, better engineering support and better
flexibility with respect to less traditional deployments (clustering, PaaS).

Some larger Railo installations we are involved with locally include:
- Australian Olympic Committee
- V8 Supercards
- NSW Board of Studies

GB

PS. Full disclosure: Railo now offers back to back support offerings
through Daemon to the Railo engineering team. Daemon is the Railo premium
support partner in APAC.

I have written a lot of complex systems in ColdFusion in my time but for the
last few years I have been working with just Java. Still love ColdFusion best
though. So much so that I wrote a web server from scratch using many similar
concepts to ColdFusion. Even to the point that pages were compiled

I nope that ColdFusion stays strong.

Re: [cfaussie] Are there any mid-snr CF devs left in Australia

2014-02-25 Thread Mike K
I'm guessing a lot of us got sick of the daily grind of finding people who
would pay for our skills and went off on our own projects. I dont look for
contracting work any more - sometimes it comes my way, but I'm just not
interested in talking to whippersnappers who think cos im over 40 years
old I must be stupid and incapable of understanding the interweb. I built
my first web site in 1996, and I spend about a third of my time learning,
just like everyone else, and I stay up with current techniques, just like
everyone else, but unlike the whippersnappers, I have a few miles on the
clock and know a bit about how to sell things and communication.

But try telling that to someone aged 25 who is barely out of short pants.
They rate you on what kind of tie you are wearing at the interview, and
ask questions like '.. and where do you see yourself in 5 years?'. Or the
total stupido- what do you think is your weakest quality?(to which
I'm thinking ..Do you want an experienced programmer or dont you? and

I'll check my list of contacts and see if any of them may be in Melbourne

I'm guessing a lot of us got sick of the daily grind of finding people who
would pay for our skills and went off on our own projects. I dont look for
contracting work any more - sometimes it comes my way, but I'm just not
interested in talking to whippersnappers who think cos im over 40 years old
I must be stupid and incapable of understanding the interweb. I built my
first web site in 1996, and I spend about a third of my time learning, just
like everyone else, and I stay up with current techniques, just like
everyone else, but unlike the whippersnappers, I have a few miles on the
clock and know a bit about how to sell things and communication.

But try telling that to someone aged 25 who is barely out of short pants.
They rate you on what kind of tie you are wearing at the interview, and ask
questions like '.. and where do you see yourself in 5 years?'. Or the
total stupido- what do you think is your weakest quality?(to which I'm
thinking ..Do you want an experienced programmer or dont you? and for how
long? months or years? I'm not looking for a career here - just to do the

2014-02-25 Thread Andrew Scott
It has been my experience that those finding it difficult to get
developers, are themselves using older version of ColdFusion, mainly
version 5. And that is a problem in itself... Not saying this is that case
here, but something to consider.

And personally the money usually on offer for developing on these systems,
is like a kick in the teeth for developers.

2014-02-25 Thread Lucas
yep, there are still a few of us around...
the challenge has always been 'which stone to look under'

* Seek and the like are full of the new toys, PHP, Rails and a bit of .net
* The CFUGs of old have long since disappeared..

Even CFaussie has seen better days...

but there are a few of us around.

Dave? what specifically are you looking for? I may know a few peeps that
are kicking around that want a flash back to the 'good old days'

cheers,
Lucas.

RE: [cfaussie] Are there any mid-snr CF devs left in Australia

2014-02-25 Thread Dale Fraser
Not sure I agree with that,

I haven’t come across any companies using CF5 for a very long time, most are 8
or 9.

Still there are lot of spaghetti applications out there good developers don’t
want to work on and a lot of spaghetti developers that good companies don’t
want.

cfaussie is more a social group these days, questions are generally saved for
stackoverflow and the likes.

But there really are a lot more companies and people out there, however in
reality it’s only a fraction of other technologies.

PS: If it make you feel any better, finding Ruby On Rails developers isn’t any
easier.

See that is the thing Dale, your experience is different to the next.

I know of 7 companies just in the last 3 years alone, who couldn't get
developers and have emailed me. When I ask them what version they are
using, so I can ask around, I almost fall over backwards when they say
ColdFusion 5.
