[change] Fwd: LensShift fellowship - know any Ruby on Rails developers?

2019-04-17 Thread Sunil Garg
[I'm forwarding the following opportunity upon request from a friend.
Please reach out to LenShift directly if interested. -Sunil]

I'm writing to ask whether you might know of any ruby on rails developers
or groups they frequent! LensShift has just launched a fellowship and we're
really hoping to attract interested, passionate talent. The deadline to
apply is April 26th and I've copied a short description below. The full JD
can be found attached!

LensShift's Beta platform went live last year and we're now focused on
improving engagement and usability. We're looking for somebody who can
further develop the platform with the guidance of our CTO. Being an open
source project, this is a great opportunity for newer developers since it
is a live app that can be referenced when applying for other opportunities.
The time commitment is flexible with a target of 1-3 hours each week
depending on your schedule/interest. LensShift’s entirely remote and global
team works on a volunteer basis. As such, we do not have any funds
available to provide remuneration for this role at this time. The language
knowledge we're looking for is Ruby on Rails and JavaScript.

Would really appreciate if you could pass this on to anybody you think
might be interested.

[change] Uber's India Growth team is hiring!

2015-03-24 Thread Sunil Garg
Hi Change,

Some of you might remember me from my days at UW in years past. I now work
on the India Growth team at Uber – we're hiring software engineers (and
other roles) for my team, which I think is very relevant for Change members.

For me, in many ways this is the dream job I envisioned back in my ICTD
days at UW – we're working on solving hard technical problems that directly
improve lives of people in resource-constrained regions, both by
fundamentally improving access to transportation and creating jobs (*thousands
of new jobs every week*), with products that are used by millions on a
daily basis.

Some examples of the problems we're solving:

* reinventing safety infrastructure http://blog.uber.com/send-status-sos and
background checks http://blog.uber.com/safer-together to improve safety
standards in coordination with local governments
* rethinking digital payments http://blog.uber.com/wallet in a cash
economy where regulations make paying with credit cards a difficult user
experience
* training underserved populations http://blog.uber.com/india-women to
develop professional skills and improve their access to equitable earning
opportunities

Of the 50+ countries we operate in, India is one of the fastest growing
markets in Uber's history. By providing access to safe, reliable, and
affordable transportation at scale, we’re making India a better place to
live and creating a model for technology improving lives in developing
countries.

If you're interested in joining us (or know someone who might be), feel
free to get in touch with me at su...@uber.com. I'm also happy to chat
about other roles or teams at Uber.

Regards,
Sunil

To: Sunil Garg sunil at sunilgarg.com

 .
 Dear Sunil Garg,

International Conference on Enabling Access to Education through ICT

 Background:

Children with disabilities in India are often left out of mainstream schools
due to a variety of reasons, primarily the lack of awareness amongst
educational organizations and teachers, near absence of infrastructural
resources and lack of training in this regard. It is believed that barely two
per cent of the 70 million disabled persons have access to education in
India. Unless we take special efforts to remedy this situation by equipping
teachers, educational institutions and the entire social infrastructure to
adopt innovative, cost effective and technology based resources such as
assistive technologies, ubiquitous Web, multiple platforms, social networks,
online libraries and digital resources, etc. to enable access to education
for disabled children, they will continue to remain excluded from social
 participation.

 Join the Discussion!

The conference will focus on highlighting existing policy and practical
barriers for students and educational institutions in developing countries,
showcase ICT based solutions which are presently being adopted in different
countries, point to existing knowledge resources and emerging trends in
education. The conference will look at the various technologies, tools and
practices that are necessary to bring education within the reach of all
persons with disabilities as a step towards achieving inclusive education in
India. This includes education at all levels - primary, secondary and higher
education as well as distance and online education.

The format of the conference is highly engaging and is designed to enable the
attendees to explore the challenges and opportunities while equipping them
with the tools needed to implement ICT solutions within their organizations.

The expected outcomes from this conference are:

Create awareness amongst educators, policy makers and disability organizations
 Understand challenges and explore solutions
Evolve a set of recommendations for educators on best practices
Publish a White Paper which will provide a set of recommendations for policy
 makers on inclusive education.
Create a case study database of best practices on the use of ICTs in
 education for persons with disabilities.

[change] Literacy Bridge is a frontrunner in online vote for donation from Paul Buchheit

2009-08-03 Thread Sunil Garg
Here's a bit of press about Literacy Bridge, and an opportunity to
vote at http://moderator.appspot.com/#15/e=90c6at=90c6b

-Sunil

Sent to you by Sunil Garg via Google Reader:

It's Bill Clinton as David and a Seattle non-profit as Goliath
via TechFlash - Seattle's Technology News on 8/3/09

Bill Clinton is a master vote getter, so it's no surprise that his non-
profit Clinton Foundation is leading an online election to receive
what could be a sizeable donation from the creator of Goole's Gmail.
But the tiny Seattle non-profit Literacy Bridge -- which has developed
a small, portable audio device called a Talking Book -- is at least
staying in the race against the 42nd president.

The competition was created by Gmail lead developer Paul Buccheit, who
two months ago wrote in a blog post: I'm going to donate a bunch of
money, but I want random people on the Internet to decide where it
goes.

The PSBJ's Clay Holtzman has details on the race -- being conducted on
Google Moderator -- noting that The Clinton Foundation had almost
twice as many votes (520) as Literacy Bridge (270).

It is a true David vs. Goliath battle. The Clinton Foundation had
revenue of about $130 million in 2007, while Literacy Bridge (created
by former Navy Officer and Microsoft employee Cliff Schmidt) had about
$79,000 in revenue last year.

And it turns out that Literacy Bridge was actually the front runner
until recently when the Clinton Foundation ramped up efforts, reports
Holtzman. (You can't count out Clinton who has been called The
Comeback Kid before).

The Talking Book is currently being tested in Ghana. The nonprofit
says the low-cost device is designed to improve literacy skills for
children and adults, while also enabling knowledge to be shared with
those who do not have access to text.

Hi,

Greetings from Chirag! It is indeed that time of the year again! Not just
summer! It is time for us to commence promotion of Swades Ki Khoj again!

We are just commencing promotion for the third cohort of Swades ki Khoj - a
programme that provides young graduates between the ages of 21 and 28 with
an opportunity to spend a year living and working in a rural area.

Our experience of the past few years has suggested that email and the
internet is a very powerful medium of reaching out to people. We would be
delighted if you could forward this mail and the poster to people who could
potentially be interested to enroll in the programme.

We would be delighted to answer any other queries that you may have and
welcome suggestions and comments as well.

with warm regards

Technology as Savior: Computers and Development in Indian Popular Cinema

 ABSTRACT:

Since the late 1990s, there has been an increasing interest in the potential
technology holds in alleviating social and economic challenges in the
developing world. A great deal of academic attention has focused on the
actual application of technologies towards developmental goals. The
enthusiasm over such application of technology is seen not just at the policy
level, but equally much in a pervasive optimism broadly across the public
discourse in many parts of the developing world. India, a country credited
with reshaping its place in the world in the high-tech era, the prevalence of
this discourse is particularly fascinating. Recent research on peoples'
imagination of computers in the Indian rural hinterland showed a strong role
of information through popular media, especially cinema, in shaping ideas
about technology. We look at the portrayal of computers and computer-users in
various cinematic traditions within India since the 1990s and juxtapose these
against western portayals of technology. The distinctions both between the
Indian and western cinematic portrayals as well as those between films
designed for different consumer audiences within India help comment on the
atmosphere of aspiration around technology in present day India.

Asha-Seattle is delighted to present to you one of its esteemed
 partners http://www.ashanet.org/projects/project-view.php?p=397
Mr. E. S. Ramamurthy. After a distinguished career at Bharat Heavy
Electricals Ltd. and a stint with Govt. of India as a Senior
Adviser, Mr. Ramamurthy embarked on yet another career in the area
of education by starting Sikshana. Managed by Sivasri Foundation,
Sikshana aims to improve the quality of primary education by
evolving a sustainable model which will lend itself to replication
on a larger scale. As 90% of all children in the age group of 6-14
attend government run public schools in India, Sikshana tries to
work with the government and attempts to reform the primary
education system by working within the system. Currently, 133
primary schools, in and around Bangalore, with nearly 2 students
have been adopted by Sikshana. You can find information about
Sikshana at www.sikshana.org http://www.sikshana.org/ and attend
this talk to learn even more about this unique program from the man
 himself.

Asha-Seattle hopes that this will provide a platform and opportunity
where you get to interact with individuals who are undertaking
groundbreaking social work in India. It also hopes that its partners
get a valuable opportunity to learn and network with individuals who
may have valuable experience to share from diverse backgrounds.
