I ran into a similar problem.
Ended up following the advice here:
- https://github.com/clojure-emacs/cider-nrepl
Setting ~/.lein/profiles.clj to this helped:
{:user {:plugins [[cider/cider-nrepl "0.10.0-SNAPSHOT"]]}}
