Re: Stus-List LPG tank -- 37+
Yep, propane. Liquefied Propane Gas to be exact. A grill tank should cost about $10-12 to get filled. From empty. Try to find a place that will only charge you for the amount you buy by weight. Some places just charge a flat fee regardless of how much was left in your tank before filling. My local ACE Hardware has good prices and only charges for what it took to fill me up. I think the standard grill tanks are 20# and the little green ones for your lanters are 1#. A lot of the aluminum marine grade tanks are about half that. But has a number of qualifiers, and does not show (or mention of course) the pulverized hull to deck joint and toe rail on the starboard side, nor the pulpit, etc. His terms would make it very difficult, if not impossible to arrange for a haul/inspection if you were the winning bidder. Even if he got the boat for free it would take probably 10k to responsibly fix the damage. Rudder post anyone? Three photos, really? The whole bit about leaving town for Colorado for his kids school etc is his problem (if true), not the bidders. Is it not a salvage title? He lists as clean title. Guess that means something different to someone on ebay than honest buyers. I would report the sale as a scam if I could. This guy is a scum bag. The main was actually not made correctly to the stringent Schaefer specs and the Genoa was to the point of disintegration along the leech. Aout four days into our annual three week sailing trip, the leech detached from the Genoa (again). We called ahead and pulled into the Van Isle marina in Sidney BC and right up to the dock at UK sail loft to get the genny repaired. They fixed it and even gave us an overnight berth with power and everything. I met Suart Dahlgren, the owner. He had been the tech talk presenter at the CC RDV a few years ago and was familiar with the boat. He is also very knowledgeable. What started as a discussion about possibly getting a new Genoa ultimately turned into deal for both primary sails. The Mainsail was never done right and at its end of life. Of course, the cost was a huge impediment to doing it. But Stu gave a sweet 15% discount of each sail and an additional 5% for getting both...but the real clincher was the 0.75 USD to CAD exchange rate, which amounted to an additional 25%. Stus-List New Sails for Alera
John Aside from the ongoing problems with the incorrectly constructed mainsail, it's very nice. We are cruisers and pretty much only go out with two on board, myself and my wife Lynn. She is not yet comfortable at the helm (I'm working on that). So, the in boom furling and accompanying electric winch saves her a lot of problems and keeps her in the cockpit. . The PO left a lot of weird stuff, but the boom and winch were not among them. The down sides are a rigid vang, and no out haul, both of which limit the amount of mainsail tuning. But there are ways that I am learning but using the baby stay and the combination of the halyard and furler...it's a learning process at this point. It sure does furl easy! Just crank it down to any batten and you're done! I am really looking forward to the new main to see what a difference that makes. These are the first new sails I have ever had...so, I am for sure stoked! Stus-List New Sails for Alera
Listers I know I should have asked you all before taking action and I am certain that someone out there will have a better solution...that said, I am pleased to announce that I pulled the trigger on new sails for Alera. The PO installed a Schaefer In Boom furler but went cheap on the mylar sails to go with it. They were ~15 years old and both sails have been in for repairs every year for the past two years. Lynn and I talked it over, slept on it and were unanimous on going for it! :D Since I need thin sails to fit the boom when furled we went to a set of UK Tape-Drive Cruising sales. They're due for delivery in October. I'll let you all know if they are as good as I hope. Re: Stus-List Propane tanks
The OPD fitting is simply a new valve that is screwed into the tank, replacing the original valve. There is no welding involved in installing a new OPD valve. The certification dates are stamped (or engraved) onto the collar of the tank--there is no magic to this. While I am not advocating this, anyone could put a new date on the collar of the tank and it wouldn't be questioned. Again, if you have a carbon steel tank and it is out of date, throw it away and get a new tank--they are not worth messing with. Also, any person who might fill your steel tank could refuse to fill it on the basis of rust, regardless of the last certification date. Re: Stus-List LPG tank -- 37+
If this tank has not been refilled in a long time, there are two things to check... Does it have a triangular knob on the valve? That indicates that the valve is equipped with the MANDATORY overfill prevention device (OPD). Also look for a manufacturing date stamped on the tank indicating it's age. Over 12 years, or without the overfill prevention, it is illegal to fill the tank. Bill Bina On 8/20/2015 8:26 AM, Josh Muckley via CnC-List wrote: Yep, propane. Liquefied Propane Gas to be exact. Re: Stus-List Off topic-Newport boat show 2015
there are shuttles for the show. From Portsmouth, you're already on Aquidneck island (That islandis made of 3 towns. Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth) so you don't have any bridges to worry about and you may get lucky enough to be close to a shuttle. it's about 15-20 minutes ride to downtown Newport from Portsmouth. You could also try Bristol, RI. there is at least one hotel, and a bunch of BBs there. Its just over the Mt. Hope bridge from Portsmouth and is really quaint with lots of restaurants, shops, bike path... I'm not sure if it isn't too late to find places to stay for the show though. My guess is it will be pretty busy this year as the economy improves. Re: Stus-List LED's for TRILIGHT?
I do not have a marine beam tricolor, but have ~5 or 6 other lights from them. They are not the cheapest, but I have been very happy with them, especially this one which we have throughout the cabin in our plastic reading lamps on our 89 30-2: http://store.marinebeam.com/red-white-switchable-led-for-dome-lights/ Remember when replacing bulbs with LEDs for nav lights, i understand that they no longer meet colregs unless the fixture is approved for led replacement of incandescent bulbs (which I've not seen anywhere... Cause I looked into doing so) Therefore, if you were in a mishap at night you could be deemed to be at fault even if you weren't. Of course the Coast Guard may have a reason to board as well. Either scenario is admittedly unlikely, but possible. The new Marine Beam tricolor seems like a very good value on my opinion. I cannot say anything about your tricolour, but I have a white LED in the combination red/green bow light on my boat. It certainly shows the right colours through the lens. But this may (will?) depend on the lens and the LED. Re: Stus-List LPG tank -- 37+
These aluminum tanks are worth recertifying. Had mine done in Bridgewater near Halifax for $50, a lot cheaper than buying a new tank. Costco in Halifax will not refill these aluminum tanks at all because the pumps are programmed and cannot be over ridden manually. I take mine to a place that still has a manual scale. Thanks for the replies and keep them running if you got an idea or a plan for us. We would like to stay close to town to be able to just go walk around and dont spend to much time in the car. We will keep looking, Airbnb has some good offers and the Melvill campgroud is still an option so we have more money in our pockets to spend at the show and eating out. It's nice to know that there will be some parking and shuttle buses, i will try to learn more about the location of those. I have to confess that my absolute best would be to be able to stay / camp on a boat at a dock close by. Any idea if a lister or other poeple would be willing to rent their boat for few nights. That could be more boat bucks in your Pocket, i dont know what to offer but something like around 250$ plus a bottle of something good to start talking (17-20 sept)! We are not looking for luxury, and asking no more than just a place to sleep with our sleeping bags. Obviously would leave the place as we found it (leave no trace!) The seller is clearly being dishonest. Depending on the quality of the work done, it might be a good deal, but saying that it only has SOME LIGHT WEAR FROM REGULAR SAILING is deliberately misleading. Ebay was much better and safer for purchasers, when bidders were allowed to communicate with each other. The way they run it now facilitates crooks. I think someone bought the salvaged boat, fixed it up and is flipping it. not that that is necessarily a bad thing... it just needs a really good survey... ___ Email address: CnC-List@cnc-list.com To change your list preferences, including unsubscribing -- go to the bottom of page at: http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com -- ___ Email address: CnC-List@cnc-list.com To change your list preferences, including unsubscribing -- go to the bottom of page at: http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com ___ Email address: CnC-List@cnc-list.com To change your list preferences, including unsubscribing -- go to the bottom of page at: http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com
Re: Stus-List LPG tank -- 37+
I had my alumin tank re-valved and retested. Cheaper than a new aluminum. I would probably do fiberglass the next time around. Had mine done in Bridgewater near Halifax for $50, a lot cheaper than buying a new tank. Costco in Halifax will not refill these aluminum tanks at all because the pumps are programmed and cannot be over ridden manually. I take mine to a place that still has a manual scale.
