Re: Stus-List Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?

2015-08-23 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Actually, the biggest advantage is when you are sailing in big seas. I had an
encounter where the nav lights were not visible, because they were obscured by
the waves.

If I am not mistaken you can have a red-over-green combination on the masthead
in addition to the normal nav lights at the pulpit. This way you are covered
for the long distance and the short distance (motor boat).

As others have mentioned, the tri colour is used instead of, and not in
addition to the other nav lights, when under sail.

One advantage that has not been mentioned is that the mast head light is
visible further.

On a clear night you can see it while the rest of the hull is still over the
horizon.

Is there a reason every one is using tri colors at the mast head? Is this in
addition to the regular side lights and stern light

One had ONLY its anchor light on; the other came in with a mast-mounted bicolor

Dave has Stemball Fittings on his shrouds, not T-Ball fittings. He
probably has a t-Ball Fitting on his Baby Stay (and on his running Back &

T-Ball fittings need the rubber plugs, Stemballs don't.

Hi Richard,

Just use a snack block to your toe-rail when you ned a little down-wing vang.
Save your money and buy a good hard-vang that will likely attach to the mast
above those blocks The hard-vang will save you all the grief of the topping
lift - a real quality of life improvement.

Or, you might just use a couple spectra loops, to create a attachment point
high enough to clear.

Re: Stus-List Adjustable Genoa Cars

2015-08-23 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
+1 for the Garhauer cars.

I have them on both boats and use them all the time to tweak the sail shape
and adjust to changing conditions. Particularly useful when only rolling the
headsail partially out, and when moving the car back and forth when doing
windward/leeward. Adjusting the pin stop cars is a PITA.

Guido at Garhauer made the ball bearing cars for my 38 to fit the Merriman H
track that came on the boat, so I did not need to replace the t track. No
charge for the custom work and the total was between 1/3 and 1/2 the cost of
the Harken cars.

They allow you to alter the shape of your genoa - more twist for power, etc.

I have Garhauer and have for years, they perform well at much less cost than

the alternatives.

Stus-List 34+ lower intermediate shrouds

2015-08-23 Thread davepulaski via CnC-List
UPDATE:

Boy am I glad I asked you guys about this!  I went up the mast yesterday - the
toggles on these two shrouds were not pulled all the way down & seated in their
sockets, thus causing the unfair lead out of the mast.   I hate to think what
might have happened if I loaded up the rig and tried to sail like this.

I just disconnected them one at a time on the deck, went up & jiggled the
shroud where it enters the mast until the ball dropped down into its socket.

Stus-List Batten receptacles - huh?

2015-08-23 Thread davepulaski via CnC-List

Ah crap.   I figured something was missing; there are no such critters on the
boat.

Looks like I gotta start calling lofts to have the batten hardware replaced.

Anyone have a loft they like on the MA north shore?

Thanks again guys!

You guys have been great with helping me get my recently-acquired 34+ sorted

So on to the next mystery.   I really wasn't expecting an issue getting the
mainsail on, but the batten receptacles have me stumped.
The boat has full battens and a harken mainsail luff car system,  with pins
that go through little fabric loops sewn into the luff of the sail.
The issue I'm having is with how the battens are supposed to be secured.  They
slide into their pocket from the luff, and there is a receptable marked
"Rutgerson" that I assume is supposed to hold the front end of the batten
somehow.
There is a short length of webbing  attached to the receptable, which I again
assume is supposed to go over the end of the batten and provide a means of
tensioning it.   BUT,  there doesnt appear to be any way to make it fast!  No
Velcro, no grommets,  no buckles or shackles, etc.
Here is a pic of the top batten slid into the pocket showing the receptacle &
strap:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/sn7s37qcnqdd8v8/20150822_143132.jpg?dl=0
Anyone else have this system & care to shed some light?   A google search
didn't turn up anything useful
Thanks! Dave

Re: Stus-List Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?

2015-08-23 Thread S Thomas via CnC-List
As others have mentioned, the tri colour is used instead of, and not in
addition to the other nav lights, when under sail.
One advantage that has not been mentioned is that the mast head light is
visible further.
On a clear night you can see it while the rest of the hull is still over the
horizon.
