Fred,

I do want the 9-inch screen (at least).

There are so many different models — is there a guide somewhere which tells
people what system has what?

All the best,

Re: Stus-List C 44 Custon

2016-01-11 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
At least double the purchase price, discounting your “labor”.

Unfortunately, when I went out to see if that boat was listed in Yachtworld.com
I ran across this.

If I weren’t hip-deep in a complete restoration, I would be looking very
seriously at this boat. Somebody with a large checkbook did it right. IMHO,
this boat is gorgeous. Some downsides are that it is 44’ which might be a bit
much for my wife and me. And, it is a 1975 hull which probably give folks and
their insurance/finance companies some pause.

Re: Stus-List Raymarine e-Series Chartplotters/MFDs

2016-01-11 Thread David Lenehan via CnC-List
Edd,

The 9" screen in the eS Series is dearer than the 7" screen but still worth
looking at for the reasons given by Fred. I'm going with the 7" version as
I set up "Sea Mistress" from scratch with a fully integrated Raymarine
system. Looked seriously at the 9" but I found the 7" screen to be more
than acceptable - same size as my Samsung phone which I have no trouble
reading.

Hope that helps

I’ve seen velvet paintings of a big-rig where it all lights up. Wouldn’t it be
cool to have a lighted velvet painting of your C?

I used the Interlux bilge coat on my 27. Standing up very nicely. But the fumes
during application! Make sure you have a good OV respirator.

I consider myself lucky that the old wrap on the wet exhaust on my Atomic 4
wasn’t asbestos when it vibrated off. I had it tested before tearing into the
rest of it. But if by some miracle the exhaust had been original .

Stus-List Autohelm hand bearing compass

I think that Ron C. was looking to replace his Autohelm hand bearing compass.
They are great units. I have an extra one available for $75 USD if you're
interested. Kept it as a spare on my other boat but that's for sale now so it
won't be sold with the boat.

Well, I've got what I consider a reasonable quote for the nameplates. I can
supply them in black UV resistant polycarbonate for $75 each side plus
shipping.. That includes everything including the NRE (non-recurring
engineering charges). The NRE is basically CAM charges). I need to know who is
interested. I suspect I can have them in about a week. If there are similar
nameplates for other C models, I can entertain getting them as well. I don't
know if I can get them in stainless steel, but if possible it will be quite a
bit more expensive because of the small radii of some of the cuts. A 1/16"
cutter moves very slow in stainless
So let me know if you are interested.

The New Years Day cruise is an old tradition for us. Most of the time it's a
motor cruise since winter on the Wet Coast is either light to no wind or too
much wind. This year was no wind but pleasant weather conditions.

An important part of this cruise is toasting some points of the compass.
Cardinal points, if you please. January 1st almost kept us in the marina due to
a layer of ice, we have a lot of fresh water coming into the smallish Nanaimo
Harbour. Some brave boats cut a path so we could get out to do our toasts.

Had we known there were beasties only four miles away, we would have went out
to Gabriola Island.

Well, I got the new 30 pint/day dehumidifier installed on board. It started at
60% RH as indicated by the hygrometer which the PO had so kindly installed. 12
hours of continuous use and the RH is down to 50%. 5-6 more hours later and it
was down to 45%. When we started we had just scrubbed all of the cabinets of
mildew so I'm sure that that added to the moisture being drawn out. The
dehumidifier, like most, has a feature to install a garden hose. I ran mine to
the bilge. It also has a digital display of current humidity which agrees with
the boat's hygrometer. I can set the unit to turn on and off automatically or
run continuously.

Between the 200w engine heater and the 300w dehumidifier there's also plenty of
extra heat to draw out the moisture.

I used 1.5 - 2 gallons on my 30MKI
Depending on the year and how much of the old stuff I took off.

Two good coats and a third on the waterline and leading edges of the

That paint worked out great for me. I switched to petit because of a big,

Re: Stus-List VHF / AIS

2016-01-11 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hald held radios in the cockpit are not Gybe-proof or Broach-proof.

In the first case had a Cobra submersible handheld sitting in a cupholder on
the binnacle. A gybe on a windy day had the main sheet tear it apart! Antenna
and all control buttons completely torn off and the battery gone. Despite the
open transom on the C 115 the radio itself stayed aboard. The second
instance was a waterproof handheld situated in a cupholder in the cockpit of
our J27. A spectacular broach put some water in the cockpit and the boat
horizontal briefly at which time the radio fell out of the cupholder. Luckily
it stayed aboard.

Our ram mic on persistence is located beneath the helm seat and is out of the
way of the main sheet and feet and all other lines. It is attached to the boat
so does tend to stay aboard …

Hard to argue the first point. Things that are not attached have a propensity
to dive off the boat the very moment you turn your head and often don’t even
wait for that.

But re the second point, I have a handheld VHF radio (an older Icom) and its
Lithium battery seems to last forever (usually most of the season, but I bring
it home to recharge once every couple of months). And it has a 12 V cradle, as
well, so you could charge it every time your on-board systems are on.

That’s supposed to be a pretty nice radio; but I have an issue with the whole
wireless remote mic thing.

First, has anyone ever lost overboard something that wasn’t firmly attached to
the boat? And secondly, has anyone gone to use a piece of rechargeable
battery-powered electronics, only to find that the battery was dead? Neither
of these scenarios apply to a hard-wired remote mic like the S-H or the Icom.

Otherwise, I’d agree that the Simard was a great option.

My comment is this: The SH radios are NMEA 0183 only. This is too bad because
NMEA 2000 is much easier to integrate. If you don’t have any other electronics,
and don’t plan on integrating the radio to a plotter, then don’t worry about it
and the SH radio is a good choice. However, if you think you might want to
install a chartplotter, and display the AIS information on the plotter screen,
and / or you plan on interfacing a plotter to an autopilot, wind instrument, or
ANYTHING else, I strongly recommend you buy a VHF that has NMEA 2000 interface.

With NMEA 2000 you don’t have to worry about connecting the little tiny wires
together, or about baud rates, or who is the talker and who is the listener.
You just plug the cable in and it works.

Simrad makes a VHD/AIS receiver with NMEA 2000, so does Lowrance and I think
icom does too

The Simrad unit is nice because the second station handset is wireless and you
can carry it with you. The Lowrance unit doesn’t support the second handset.

Good luck,

Re: Stus-List New roller furler

2016-01-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
What you measured is the luff length. The headstay is always a little
longer. You would be best suited to take a tape measure to the top with a
helper and measure from the center of both pins (masthead and chain plate).

did you factor in the length of the shackle/attachment? I'd go shorter
rather than longer.
