Re: Stus-List UCCG documentation warning going around

2017-02-10 Thread RANDY via CnC-List
Dave I am glad to hear that. I wish the "U.S. VESSEL DOCUMENTATION" notice
hadn't arrived in my mail first.

Incidentally the link below appears to be broken; I can't find any such article
on cruisersnet.net. But it's interesting, because somebody else must have
gotten burned and posted about it there. The only place I've posted about it is
here.

It makes me wonder if U.S. Vessel Documentation threatened cruisersnet.net and
/ or the author of that article with defamation, and bullied them into taking
the article down.

For the record I am not worried about my own liability for defamation if U.S.
Vessel Documentation were to threaten or bring a suit against me for it. I
don't believe U.S. Vessel Documentation as a plaintiff would be able to show,
as required, that the statements I made (that it is deceitful and predatory)
are false. Moreover I believe my statements are protected by "qualified
privilege", i.e. my statements were made in good faith, and on a subject matter
in which I have an interest, and to persons having a corresponding interest,
and without malice.

But, having said all that, Stu, if you're reading this, and if you're worried
about legal exposure, it's OK with me if you delete these threads. I think they
have served their purpose. I wouldn't want any harm to come to Stu and / or
cncphotoalbum.com as a result of these threads.

Stus-List Flushing the cooling system?

2017-02-10 Thread robert via CnC-List

Bruce,
I have a Yanmar 2GMF and have flushed it of coolant then then flushed
with fresh water and refill the coolant system.

I don't know your engine but mine was relativity straight forward. My
engine has three (3) engine coolant system drains (wing nut types on
valves).seems like 2 on the engine and one on the back of the heat
exchangerand there clear pieces of hoses from the outlet of each
value so you can actually see the coolant in the hose and direct the
outflow to a container. Drain the coolant and close the outlets and
refill with water only.circulatedrain.fill with coolant.

My fresh water has a drain when opened drains to the bilge.open it,
empty the tank, flush, empty again..close the value and fill it via
the pressured fresh water tank.

Maybe this helps.

there a way, such as by removing hoses that I can not just drain the
coolant, but actually flush through fresh water? I'm thinking there's
got to be a relatively simple approach, but I could be wrong..

Re: Stus-List Flushing the cooling system?

2017-02-10 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
The problem with "flushing" is that from an environmental perspective
you'll probably want to collect what coolant you can. Now disconnecting
the hoses and using a shop-vac to blow out the coolant with air would
probably work. Why do you want to flush out the system? If you're worried
about the efficacy of the coolant you can just test/sample it. The fresh
water cooling system is pretty unlikely to be the week link along your
delivery trip. There are lots of projects (they never end) just wait till
you are safe and sound in your home marina and you don't have impending
deadlines bearing down on you.

I can't imagine that dorade vents under the helmsman's seats would have been
original equipment. The certainly do not appear on our 1994 37+. That being
said, with 1 large forward hatch, 4 small hatches aft and the ports into the
cockpit, I've been wondering how to get active ventilation when we are off the
boat. It seems like a few Nicro vents, installed through the smaller hatches
would be the logical approach.

That said, as we are new to Florida, I'm not sure what people down here are
doing, since the boats need to be air conditioned at the dock in summer!

Thoughts anyone?

Edd,

I've always told myself that when I install solar vents it will be in the port
and stbd hatches. I'd set one to blow in and one to suck out. My thought is
that this arrangement would draw air across the cabin for better circulation.
I'm in agreement, I don't want to cut into the acrylic lenses. Well for that
matter I don't want to cut into the deck. I guess that's part of the reason
I've never installed vents.

I don't know if the PO installed dorad vents under the helmsmans hump of if
they are original equipment. I've considered running 12v vent fans and duct
work to make them more effective. I could power them from the main battery
which is kept topped up with 200w solar panels. I would use a low voltage
shutoff to only run the fans when the voltage is greater than 12.7v (when the
batteries are being charged). The 12v fans are much cheaper than the solar
ones and I wouldn't have to cut holes in the hatches or lenses.

2017-02-10 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List

Does anyone know of a source for the C teak door jambs used in the Landfall
38? They are a type of bulkhead all-in-one molding. Below is an image of a
similar molding from an expired Australian eBay listing.

Re: Stus-List Anyone need/want a really big wheel?

2017-02-10 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,
For those who dropped me a note with interest in my wheel, I'm not ignoring
you!  I just haven't been back to the boat, and even when I do this weekend,
will have little time to do anything other than finish up some maintenance
before moving the boat.

That being said, based on the comments here, I'll see how thing go through the
delivery of the boat which will cover about 120 NM and 3 days.  In the end, I
really expect that my wife will continue to want the smaller wheel, and we'll
probably come back and offer it to folks here on the list first.

Stay tuned, I should know more in about 2 -3 weeks time.
Thanks for all your input!!! Bruce Whitmore

I use a plastic spring clamp (my 1st mate keeps lots of stuff like thisaboard).
I keep it parked on the pedestal support plate when not in useand then use it
to secure the key in place when the wheel is off.  Ialso put the quick release
wheel nut back on and throw the now very loosewheel cover over it to keep
things tidy.

Put a dap of nail polish on the key that will hold it in place (if youuse
Loctite, don?t put the wheel back on too soon , don?t ask why I knowthis)

I watched a boat leave the dock with the power still connected. I am impressed
at how well that locking collar worked. It was the metal one into the metal
version
of the inlet. Once they got some slack it even undid and they could toss the
line
back to someone on shore.

I have seen and replaced several deteriorated updated Marino inlets. I
like the Smart Plug. Appears to be a superior product. Would probably
replace Touche's Marinco if it got flakey.

Having said that, a few preventative steps can make your existing setup
safer. I wrap my shore power cord around a winch before plugging it in.
That prevents any side forces on the plug. I also screw the locking collar
tight to ensure a tight connection.

Look at your inlet configuration. If the cord is not supported and is
hanging or otherwise placing side force on the inlet, devise a way to
  support it.

I lock the wheel shaft before I remove the wheel and then gravity keeps the key
in place. If the key does end up falling it only falls to the cockpit floor.
I've considered rubber bands and pvc pipe sleeves. I've even considered a shim
in the keyway to make the key fit tighter so that friction prevents it from
falling. It's just not a problem which is bad enough to command enough of my
attention to make it better.

Hi,

I like the idea of the Edson Rail Mount, but I have a question for anyone who
has used one.

How do you ensure that you don't lose the Key from the Wheelshaft?

In the winter when I take the wheel off so I can get to the back of the cockpit
under the cover, I wrap the Wheelshaft with the key in it with masking tape. I
suppose I could do the same while cruising but I am wondering if anyone else
had a more elegant solution.

About a year ago, I had a problem with bigger-wheel envy and I asked the
list-perts here about a wheel I subsequently purchased on E-Bay. It was less

machine shop (as suggested here) to fit. Went from a 36" to 44" wheel on my
35-3.

Now the point: Absolutely best move...other than looking "correct" to my eye,
I agree with everyone here about the functional upgrade. Sailing is much
easier and more options to sit (I also removed the camel-hump). Girlfriend
would rather have the room afforded by the old wheel...so I really like your
link to the Edson rail-mounted storage clamp. Thanks.
