Re: Stus-List WESTERBEKE VS ATOMIC HEAT EXCHANGER

2017-05-06 Thread Joe Della Barba via CnC-List
As long as you can get hoses on the heat exchanger and it either has an
expansion tank or you add one, it will work.
You'll need either a mechanical or electrical coolant pump too. I am on year

I have a surplus WESTERBEKE 4-60 engine which was pulled from my boat to

either installed.

How useful are the secondary winches and the coaming-mounted sheet leads?

Yep I got one too. Lots of things to take into consideration. The inside
track, winch handle swing radius, standing height on the stairs There
are lots of answers but none are perfect. If you don't give up the inside
track then in order to provide head room the whole thing looks oddly tall
and narrow particularly when viewed from the bow or stern.

I can set pictures or provide more insights if desired.

Stus-List Battery Charger - Update

2017-05-06 Thread robert via CnC-List
I have concluded the old Guest charger is dead and I just bought a
ProMariner dual bank charger. The new charger looks simple to connect
+ - connections to the two batteries and then plug it in to AC power.

My old charger didn't 'plug in' to the main control panelit is hard
wired from the charger to the panel with a red, green and negative black
wire.if I leave that in place from the control panel and put a 3
pronged plug at the end of the heavy duty 3-wire which is bolted to the
old charger, I should have AC power without drilling a big hole
somewhere to get the new plug from the charger one of existing AC
outlets just below my companionway. Am I making sense?

Obviously I am no electrician so just though I would check. Only after
two beer on the boat today, it seems to make sense.

Re: Stus-List Deck non-skid

2017-05-06 Thread Rick Taillieu via CnC-List
Hi Chuck,

The hairline crack in the gelcoat at that location is very common. You can
open the crack up a bit, fill and sand smooth, then finish off with your stripe
in gelcoat or paint.

On C, the non-skid pattern is part of the deck mold so the deck gelcoat
should be all the same colour regardless if it is in the smooth or non-skid
surfaces.

If your non-skid is a lighter shade and has grit in it then it has been painted
at some time, just not by C

Subject: Stus-List Deck non-skid

So...I'm looking at a hairline crack in non-skid portion of foredeck, right at
the seam where the foredeck ends and the trunk cabin begins. Needs attention,
and thinking of creating a one-inch bright gelcoat "stripe" that follows the
contour of the forward edge of the cabin. This would allow a good fix without
repainting the nonskid. All exposed smooth gelcoat is off-white (cabin sides,
etc), and the non-skid is a whiter-white. Hope that adequately describes my
dilemma...

The question: Is the non-skid portion a paint the factory applied to the
gelcoat after set up in the mold? Or is the non-skid area sprayed onto the
mold during the manufacturing process, and the silica added after? Has anyone
sanded the non-skid to see what's under there?

Gary,

You can put one on, but it will be tall and will start pretty far forward to
avoid the “crawling problem”

See: http://www.jordanyachts.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/profile.jpg
 and

The P.O. of the Enterprise had one installed, which, frankly, I didn’t like, so
I got rid of it. There was also a racing bimini, which gave the skipper shade
sometimes, which I eventually replaced to a four-bow bimini that covers most of
the cockpit.

All the best,

Stus-List Watch the America's Cup in Bermuda and pick up some blue water time

2017-05-06 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
As some of you will recall, I'm taking Imzadi to Bermuda as part of the
"Rally to the Cup" to see the Americas Cup finals. My outbound crew from
Annapolis to Bermuda is complete, and includes two other listers, but I
still have room for one or two more crew on the return trip.

The racing will be pretty exciting, with boat speeds approaching 50 knots
and traveling at 2 or 3 times the wind speed. The skipper of Oracle Racing
has said that this may be the most competitive race in the last half
century. Here is a YouTube video with a sample:
https://www.facebook.com/americascup/videos/1709079185785174/ The
leading candidates for the challenger seem to be the New Zealand and British
teams, so the next Cup could be far away and expensive to get to.

What's on offer is a relatively inexpensive experience. Most of my outbound
crew will return home after the first weekend of racing, so accommodations
will be available on the boat. Spartan, but the price is right. Your cost
will be the cost of a flight to Bermuda, which is surprisingly inexpensive,
tickets to view the racing on June 24th and 25th (and maybe the 26th & 27th
if the race is not decided by the 25th), a bus/ferry pass to get from the
boat to the race venue, whatever you spend playing tourist (and you will
definitely want to see Bermuda), and your flight home after return to
Norfolk around July 3rd or 4th.

If you are interested, email me off list and I can fill you in on itinerary
and additional details.

Stus-List Stripping the bottom

Adam:

I am no expert on this topic but my guess is that the adequate thickness
of your barrier paint will be all you need.

My question is do i need to apply a coat of gelcoat to those places or
will the barrier coat protect the glass and prevent moisture intrusion.

I can honestly say this won't be a job that I will tackle again on
this boat.

Stus-List Deck non-skid

2017-05-06 Thread Chuck Saur via CnC-List
So...I'm looking at a hairline crack in non-skid portion of foredeck, right
at the seam where the foredeck ends and the trunk cabin begins. Needs
attention, and thinking of creating a one-inch bright gelcoat "stripe" that
follows the contour of the forward edge of the cabin. This would allow a
good fix without repainting the nonskid. All exposed smooth gelcoat is
off-white (cabin sides, etc), and the non-skid is a whiter-white. Hope
that adequately describes my dilemma...

The question: Is the non-skid portion a paint the factory applied to the
gelcoat after set up in the mold? Or is the non-skid area sprayed onto the
mold during the manufacturing process, and the silica added after? Has
anyone sanded the non-skid to see what's under there?

Re: Stus-List Battery Charger

2017-05-06 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
I had two Guest chargers on previous boats that similarly just died. On my
current boat I installed a Charles 3-bank (I think it's 30 amp) "smart"
charger. It was expensive, but is robust. I haven't had any issues since I
installed it several years ago.

Subject: Stus-List Battery Charger

My old Guest Pro Battery Charger Model 2815 seems to have hit the
dustit was working yesterday but today it was notno charge going
to batteries and no lights on on the charger'red' when it is
charging 'green' when in float mode. There is an exterior fuse which I
checked and it looks finemaybe I should replace it just to be sure.
I have no idea how old this device is or how long they are supposed to last.

Is there anything else I could check?

However, if it has simply 'expired', any suggestions on what I might
replace it with?

I was looking at installing a Genius Gen2 20A unit. I found some good reviews
on it. Anyone have experience with this one?
