Thanks for sharing that. The 30 Mk1 sail’s luff length is listed as 36’. That
seems about five feet short of full hoist for a 30-1.

Ok, so far we have 17 responses with 8 intending to come by boat. That's
about half of the total original responses. I feel pretty good about the
turn out. There are a couple of things working against us and I think we
can probably work towards clearing them up in the future. I'll talk to the
harbor master (Beth) again on Monday and get the final contact details
forwarded to you all. She had originally stated that having all of the
reservations made and paid for by March 3st would be a good goal. She can
work mooring ball and slip reservations.

Hello all               Well I just got my insurance bill from boat US and it
went up 238$  a pretty big increase.  I called to ask why and they said it was
nothing on my end rates just went up.  I am wondering if everybody else got
raised as well?  I tried to increase my deductible  which is zero, to say 4% or
so to lower my rates. They said they can't do that because they have a
automatic lowering of the deductible over time and once it reaches zero it must
stay there. Sounds like they just want to keep the bill up! 1100$ for 40k,
might have to start shopping, any feedback?

Re: Stus-List insurance

2018-02-03 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
If your deductible is zero, that means that your deductible has gone from
whatever you had it, to zero without increasing your premium for the zero
deductible. In other words, you had no claims in the past four years, and
your deductible has gone down twenty-five percent per year over those four
years. I had a claim, last year, and I didn't have to pay a deductible.
It started out as a four percent deductible, and it went down when I had no
claims for four years or more. I had the same question as you, until they
explained it to me. My insurance is due to renew in April, and the
deductible will probably go back to four percent, plus whatever the new
rates have increased to.

I got a quote from BoatUS  around the end of September I think, and then when I
went to go buy the insurance in December,, it had gone up 35%. Needless to say,
I balked and started looking. I got a couple of other quotes in a similar
range, and then one quote for around $900 less than the BoatUS original quote.
It's crazy. They are obviously trying to pay for that horrendous mess last
summer, that had to have cost them hundreds of Millions. But, I'm not in that
high-risk area so why should I have to pay the price of paradise when I don't
have it?

Re: Stus-List insurance

2018-02-03 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Same thing happened to me. My boat is insured through BoatUS, for inland US
lakes & rivers (which excludes the Great Lakes), and for racing. For 2016 I
paid $511. For 2017 I paid $521. For 2018 it jumped 10% to $574.

In 2016, the underwriter for BoatUS insurance was National Liability & Fire
Insurance Company. For 2017 it switched to GEICO.

When I first obtained the insurance in 2016, BoatUS also had a diminishing
deductible policy under which my deductible diminishes by 25% of the original
deductible, per year, to zero for the fifth year, as long as I do not claim any
losses in the first four years. It looks like the diminishing deductible
policy is still in effect with GEICO, because my deductible has gone from $600
in 2016 to $375 in 2017 to $250 in 2018.

Thanks Brian,

I was aware of the Kiddie recall, but failed to add a checking of the
extinguishers to my to-do list.

I just checked the two extinguishers on my boat, and both are affected by
recall. Kidde is sending out replacements.

I believe I purchased these originally at either Walmart or Home Depot. They
are the standard white mariner extinguisher
which are also available at West Marine.

To those who have not yet checked their units, it is simple to check via the
web link given below. Nothing to mail in
or send, it is all do online and takes only a minute or two to complete.

Re: Stus-List Question: Radar reflector vs. active radar

2018-02-03 Thread Damian Greene via CnC-List
One of the fellow members of our UK yacht club (Reading Offshore Sailing Club)
has a funny story about entering Le Havre in fog with their active radar
reflector. Based on the size of their echo, the other traffic was expecting a
much bigger ship entering the channel, and had cleared out of the way.

That’s one of the more weird things I’ve heard… radars are specifically
designed to try to filter out any signals not their own.
Other boats might have something like the CARD system aboard to pick up other
vessels’ radar:

But those systems haven’t been available new for a decade.  The other type of
device that you could have on your vessel to help other radar-equipped vessels
see you better would be an active radar target augmentation system like the
Echo-Max:

Or a Search and Rescue Transponder (SART):

Here's a question for your collective wisdom:
We regularly have fog here in Maine, and my normal practice is to hoist a Davis
emergency radar reflector in the shrouds (so I hopefully will not get run over
by a lobster boat). So this year I decided to get the yard to mount an EchoMax
reflector on the mast, and be better prepared.
However, reviewing my work-list with the yard maintenance manager yesterday, he
asked why I was doing this, as I have radar, and the signal from my radome
would light up on other boats' radar better than a reflector.
That's something I've never heard before, so I told him I would investigate and
get back on that. Frankly, this does not make a lot of sense - why would people
bother with radar reflectors - but he has more than 20 years' experience with
Hinckley and others.
I'd like a definitive answer (Fred?) to resolve this.

FWIW, ISAF requires radar reflectors regardless whether the boat has radar.
Even on a steel hull.
