Re: Stus-List Outhaul replacement, C&C 37/40+

2018-06-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Bruce,

I did a core to core eye splice which I simply attach to the d-shackle
which you have shown in the picture. I attach it to the D not the pin
effectively keeping the clew and the eye of the outhaul tied together. You
could also use an additional soft shackle to directly attach the eye to the
clew.

While you are at it you might consider adding a purchase system to your
outhaul. I added a 4:1 internal to the boom and now I can adjust the
outhaul under almost all wind conditions. I also added a 2:1 to the first
reef. It is amazing how much easier it is to make adjustments and reef. I
didn't have enough boom length to accommodate any form of purchase on the
2nd reef but since there is so much less sail it doesn't make too much
difference. In order to create a fixed point for my purchase systems I
worked with a local fab shop to make a becket for the triple turning block
in the mast end of the boom. You can see the block in the link below but
the picture is prior to the addition of the becket.

Stus-List Outhaul replacement, C&C 37/40+

2018-06-11 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,
Our outhaul is faded and ready for replacement.  Currently, it is comprised of
Sta-Set braided to wire, and the wire is then formed around a small thimble as
it attaches to a car in the slot on the boom.  A photo can be found here:
Outhaul.jpg.

I'd like to just go with a decent line and avoid the whole splice, thimble &
nicopress fitting idea.  I should have enough room for a simple knot and still
have enough travel.  But, I need to convert the attachment to the sliding car.
I'm thinking, however, that if I tie a 3/8 or 7/16" line to a larger shackle,
it may apply too much sideways pull on the hole in the car.    Has anyone else
dealt with this on a C&C 37/40+ with a similar boom & wire rope setup?

By the way, I really like the Novabraid Argus or NE Ropes VPC due to the
"nubby" cover that grabs nicely in my clutches.  The current clutch slips
slightly on my very old and tired outhaul, but I'm not sure a Argus or VPC to
wire braid is either possible or even desirable.

Thanks for the advice! Bruce Whitmore

The new normal I guess :(

The 35 is going to be tough to find a buyer with a dead 4-60 diesel. A4
parts are easy, but I think 4-60 parts come from English tractor shops.

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-11 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
Slightly off-topic but battery monitor related, after sailing off Croatia last
summer I decided to buy one of these

No support in the U.S. but I’m always up for something new. I replaced my Link
20 with this unit. It has a 24-hour barograph, tank monitor, ambient
temperature in addition to monitoring 2 battery banks. It has bluetooth so I
can monitor with it’s app on my iPhone.

Looks trick if nothing else. ;-)

And FWIW, the shunt is placed behind the distribution panel.

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-11 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Edd,

As you mentioned the load is so small. I believe that it is insignificant
to justify the cost and time of adding even just a simple switch. That
being said, like nearly all electronic devices, the Link2000 has a power
supply (+ and -). Put a switch in line with the + and presto you have a
means for turning it off. The advantage of leaving it on is that it will
continue to monitor current draw from things like the bilge pump, led
anchor light, radio memory, and cigarette lighter accessories.
Individually these are also insignificant but overtime they may accumulate
a surprisingly large number of amp hours which would go unmonitored without
the Link 2000 (or other battery monitor being on. Even the draw of the
Link 2000 should be being monitored assuming it is on and wired correctly.

For anybody looking for a cheap solution check out the DROK products on
Amazon. I've been extremely impressed with the price, quality, and
functionality. For loads less than 20 amps they have a modle with an
integrated shunt. For greater than 20 amps you'll need to make sure to
plan for a shunt (always on the ground).

All,

I’ve been following this thread as my PO-installed Link 2000 just isn’t working
great and I’m considering a replacement.

Perhaps I’m weird in this regard, but I’m not a fan of having any kind of load
on the batteries overnight when I leave the boat. And I know these monitors
have a constant load on the battery, albeit a small one. Nevertheless, has
anyone connected one of these to a switch so you can see readings on demand

Re: Stus-List Battery monitor shunt location

2018-06-11 Thread Brad Crawford via CnC-List
Nice write up. Yeah space is limited, my batteries are located under the
quarter berth and there is a small amount of unused space next to the battery
box on the bulkhead separating the storage compartment behind the battery
compartment. I think I’ll be able to mount a negative buss bar also.

Thanks for sharing,

Brad

We recently installed one on a 34. We mounted it in the engine room where
other electronic items, wires, etc. are and there is also a large ground
busbar there to make it easy to connect things in an orderly fashion. The
house batteries are about 2 feet away under the quarter berth.

The starter battery is on the other side under the sink. So the location makes
it easy to run the sensor wires to both banks.

We are happy with it.

I recently purchased a Victron battery monitor and am wondering where others,

have one?
