Stus-List Speed & depth transducers

2019-05-02 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Hello all,

I spent the day wet-sanding the bottom of Callisto and she is nearly ready
for a coat of paint. I also cut out the old keel joint rubbery sealant, in
preparation for some Sikaflex 291. I plan to scrub the gap a bit more and
clean with lacquer thinner before letting dry.

All the through hulls look good, bronze with marelon valves.

I have two depth transducers, one for a Standard Horizon DS30, and the
other for a Garmin 140 Fishfinder, both working. There is a plug for the
old B speed sensor, but I was pleased to find another newer speed sensor
in good shape, it appears to be a Garmin like this:

http://www.airmar.com/productdescription.html?id=103

The specs show either a NMEA 2000 or analog cable, but I haven't traced it
yet to determine which one I have. Of course, the B H1000 system I have
only does NMEA 0183, so I will need a signal converter, I think. I'm
hesitant to spend any money on the old B system until I verify the pieces
I have actually work though.

Also, the plug for the old B sensor is very thin plastic, about 2mm
thick. I'm thinking of filling the hollow plug with epoxy so it doesn't
sink the boat if it ever cracks. Or maybe just find a better one? It's 1
3/4" diameter.

Re: Stus-List Free 35'

2019-05-02 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Even up here in BC with moorage about 1/4 to 1/2 that amount, many boats
are given away or abandoned at renewal time. I attended an auction for two
boats a few months ago - a Cal 2-34 and a PY-26. Both went for under $1000
CAD. The Paceship had a newer 4 stroke outboard worth the auction price.
This is why there are so many boats sitting our mooring buoys, and with
each winter storm a few more wash up on the beach. A very sad ending for
these old boats.

Re: Stus-List painting strategy for deck Interlux vs Pettit

2019-05-02 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Interdeck, with added non-skid from Interlux, matched the texture of the
non-skid on my two mid-50s boats.

On the 25, we used Interdeck with no additional non-skid added. On the 25,
virtually all of the deck is non-skid. Only the vertical surfaces in the
cockpit (the bulkhead, the seat backs, the sides of the “foot well”, and the
inside of the transom) are not. The Interdeck without added non-skid dries to a
flat (not gloss) finish. And the color matches, which I couldn’t guarantee with
Brightside. I’ve used Brightside as a topside paint on the transom of the 38,
and it dries to a gloss finish.

The 38 has several areas of the cabin top that are glossy with no non-skid
texture. We did not paint those areas. There was a close enough color match
that the difference in color is hardly noticeable from on the dock – and not at
all visible from 15 feet away. And not using Brightside for the glossy area
saved a whole lot of prep work.

Am I wrong in assuming you meant you used Brightside on the bulkheads and
either Brightside with non skid additive or Interdeck on the non skid areas?

Imzadi and Belle are two of the three boats on which I’ve seen the deck painted
with Interdeck in the past three years. The first was my friend’s Tartan 37. On
the recommendation of the guy who does most of the work on Imzadi and after
seeing the Tartan a year after being painted I used it on my 38. After another
year I did my 25. I had originally considered doing the deck s with Kiwi Grip.

Interdeck is a 1 part paint. About $40 a quart at West Marine. Unlike Petit
deck paint you can’t tint Interdeck for color match. The off white looked to be
a good match for the faded smoke white, but turned out to be a little brighter
white. On Imzadi, the non-skid got painted and the flat parts of the deck,
cockpit bulkheads, and house were not painted. After two summer, I don’t notice
the difference any more.

On Belle, the gelcoat where the house meets the fore deck was pretty warn by 44
years of use. Patches of gelcoat were essentially gone and you could see
sunlight through the laminate from the inside, and amber blotches in the deck.
We used Interdeck with the Interlux non-skid additive on the non-skid (which is
almost everything on a 25) and Interdeck without non-skid on the cockpit
bulkhead and vertical surfaces.

I was surprised at how easy prep was. Wash good with deck cleaner and a stiff
brush. Wash again with Comet and a stiff brush. Rinse thoroughly and let dry.
Paint the first coat.

Subject: Stus-List painting strategy for deck Interlux vs Pettit

Hi all,

I'm planning paint my boat's deck in stages, roll and tip. I've chosen Kiwi
Grip for the non-skid. Ten years ago I tried a two part primer and Interlux
Perfection and painted the transom only. I picked a day with too much heat and
the sun hit the transom each afternoon so I had to grind/sand that off and
recoat. I ended up using Brightside and it looked very professional but is now
showing some problems after ten years.

I just tried Pettit EZpoxy for the first time on a helm seat. Same price as
Interlux but flows out better and easier. The paint went on easy and looks
great. The primer, EZ Prime, stinks more than the finish coat, EZ Poxy but the
smell goes away once the paint dries. Nothing stinks as much as Bilge Coat
which I find smells for days so I'd like to avoid Brightside which is a close
cousin.

Two part paints are supposed to last longer but they cost more and I want to
avoid all the carcinigens and eternal mixing of two part primer, two part
finish coat, two part flattener.

Any opinions out there, Pettit vs Interlux or some other system?

The motor appearance to be just fine.  Had a few people spew over the survey

Most of you are not familiar with marina fees in the NYC area. Liberty landing
charges about $300 per foot annual fees so a 35 foot boat costs $10,500 a year.
A C 35-1 with a non working motor is essentially worthless and with a lot

Thanks for all the info - the owner gave me all the gear today, and included an
Airmar box where one of the current transducers came from. I have the original
early 70s B gauges, plus a set of B H1000 stuff to be installed. I will try
to piece it together this week and come up with a plan. There is actually a
speed transducer installed, but I think it goes to the Hummingbird fish finder,
which works for depth, but I didn't notice a speed reading.

I'll bench test the H1000 gear before installing it - have windex, 2 displays,
and 3 interface boxes. It would be nice if I could get wind, speed and depth on
these and simplify things.

Or should I knot bother and just settle for GPS speed?

2019-05-02 Thread dwight veinot via CnC-List
I believe International Interdeck is a one part polyurethane just like
brightside. I recall interdeck came with the abrasive medium already added.
In areas on Alianna’s deck where non dkid was required i simply masked
those areas off and added the international non skip product to brightside.
Then after than cure i removed the masking tape and painted the smooth
areas with the same color brightside with no nonskid added. Be sure to stir
well after adding the nonskid powder and wait about 15 minutes before
applying. Keep it well stirred during the painting process and mix measured
amounts of each batch you prepare
