If a rigid vang is in your way, potentially a Boomkicker would work better (it
arches up, so it provides more room). It works, more or less the same way.

Tom,

I second Edd's comments. Go for a slip. Choice is limited - many of the slips
are too shallow.

When we lived in Connecticut, Block was the most fun part of our summer cruise.
Rather than deal with the uncertainty of finding a mooring, we would book a
"slip" at Champlin's. I use the term slip advisedly, because Champlin's pile
the boats in, and you will inevitably find yourself rafted 3 deep. However,
that is all part of the fun. The place is a summer-long party (80% power
boaters), with a bar by the fuel dock, music, pizza, ice-cream, cinema, pool.
Really a lot of fun - and that is before you even leave the marina.

If you have an extra couple of days, Cuttyhunk is about 35 miles further. The
"anti-Block". Well worth the visit.

2019-06-26 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Tom,

I understand that moorings can sometimes be hard to obtain, especially on a
weekend. As Neil pointed out, there is no reservation system.

Plus, depending on how many of your crew is coming on the cruise, they may
actually prefer being dockside at a marina, with easy access to showers, shore
power, and everything else that Block Island has to offer.

All the best,

Hi Listers,

My crew is demanding that I give them a break from racing so we are planning
for our first cruise, heading up Long Island Sound to Newport and Block Island,
next month. I've arranged dock space at the navy base in Newport, but I'm still
working out the details for the stop at Block Island.

We'd be arriving on a Sunday afternoon and staying overnight. Does anyone know
what the town mooring situation in the Great Salt Pond is like? Would it be
better to forget about the moorings and make a reservation now at one of the
marinas instead?

My worry is that all the town moorings will be occupied, the docks'll be full,
and we'll have to set an anchor for the night. My anchor tackle is geared
towards racing rather than cruising (150 ft of nylon rode with a short section
of rubberized chain and a Fortress) so I'd like to avoid that.

Thanks for any advice or thoughts you may have!

Best,
Tom

I'm waxing Touche' and the Navy Blue Angels are practicing overhead. Touche's
Pensacola slip is in Bayou Chico just a few miles north of their home base,
Pensacola Naval Air Station.

I grew up across Bayou Grande from the base. Watched them as a kid. Never
gets old. Never.

We'll be anchored in Santa Rosa Sound July 13 when they do their Pensacola

Re: Stus-List Block Island's Great Salt Pond - Town Mooring or Dock Reservation?

2019-06-26 Thread Neil Gallagher via CnC-List

Tom,

I've spent a few nights at Block Island for the last several years on my
cruises.  The situation with the town moorings is first come/first
serve, no reserving.  It reminds me of trying to find a parking spot in
NYC, at 7 - 8 am you cruise around the mooring field looking for someone
taking sail covers off or running an engine and wait behind him so you
can grab the mooring the second he leaves. By 10 am  or so they're all
taken.

But, the real secret is that at 3 PM each day, the harbormaster can put
transients on private moorings that are unused for that evening.  You
call him on VHF and he meets you by Can 13 and directs you to a
mooring.  I've always been able to get one if I arrive later in the
day.  That gives you at least one night so early the next morning you
can do the town mooring derby described above.

The anchorage is another option, of course, but as I found out your nice
spot with plenty of clearance will inevitably be crowded by late
arrivals.  Kind of zoo, but there's quite a lot of room at the far edge,
long way to shore.

When are you going out?  I'm leaving this weekend on more or less the
same route, be good to meet up.  Contact me offline.

Block Island.

We'd be arriving on a Sunday afternoon and staying overnight. Does
anyone know what the town mooring situation in the Great Salt Pond is
like? Would it be better to forget about the moorings and make a
reservation now at one of the marinas instead?

My worry is that all the town moorings will be occupied, the docks'll
be full, and we'll have to set an anchor for the night. My anchor
tackle is geared towards racing rather than cruising (150 ft of nylon
rode with a short section of rubberized chain and a Fortress) so I'd
like to avoid that.

Thanks for any advice or thoughts you may have!

The C 115 that I used to crew on had the same issue, tried smaller jaws in
the clutch, which helped but not much. In the end, what worked was adding the
second core to the 5' of halyard where the clutch needs to grab. On that boat,
we also removed some core from the tail end of the halyard, which made feeding
thru clutches easier. If you are doing this remember to add some locking wiping
to keep everything in place. On the J35 I race on now we actually added a
second clutch inline for the main and jib halyards, this helps but when it is
really blowing we still take the halyards to a horn cleat as well (but no
locking turn).

Before you bulk up your Halyards or change to a rope with a more aggressive
cover, it would be good to know if the high tech but slippery halyard line is:

A. New to the boat?

B. If yes to the above, is it properly sized for the clutch?

C. If old, is there visible wear on the cover or signs of non-recoverable
compression where the clutch holds the rope? Try end for ending the halyard to
move the wear area to a different spot. If wear seems excessive, replace the
halyard before it comes apart under load.

D. Are the clutch teeth worn? Depending on the brand of clutch, rebuild kits
can be sourced. If nothing else has changed on the boat and the halyard has
just started slipping, this is the usual culprit.

I have hi tech low stretch but slippery halyard which my clutches just won't

Any thoughts or solutions beyond replacing clutches or halyards. now I take to
a cleat, but cumbersome as I have both on same side with a single winch and
when remove from winch get a little slip before can cleat off..

Another thought is a horn or cam cleat aft of the clutches. J boats all have
cam cleats. Our Frers has a horn cleat. On windy days our main and jib
halyards will slip if this is not used. On the C 115 we would lose 2 feet of
hoist on main if we did not tie off the halyard somehow.
