Stus-List Dive boat fire and egress

2019-09-03 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
Joe, Every single boat owner should have a smoke alarm on board. The odds of
actually using a means of egress depend almost entirely upon getting an early
warning. A smoke alarm is maybe $10 and some have integrated CO alarms too. It
will be interesting to see what the cause of the fire was but everyone deserves
a chance to escape a fire like that whether in a building or a boat. Just think
about how much time passed before the boat was fully involved. There will be a
lot more to that story than the news originally reported. Len

Stus-List Engine fuel shut-off lever

2019-09-03 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Finding and identifying the fuel shut-off lever is a good thing for any skipper
with a diesel axillary engine--before you need to locate it when the engine
refuses to quit--don't ask me how I know!
OTOH, I would not recommend putting your hand over the air intake pipe/filter
housing with the engine running.
I tried that recently on my 28 hp Beta and the suction was so great that I had
to get my hand out of there before the engine came near to quitting.
I almost had a 3 inch diameter suction 'hickey' on my palm before I decided to
stop the engine with another method--that is when I found the manual fuel
shut-off on the engine!
BTH, using the main fuel shut-off on the outlet of the fuel tank should also
work--but there could be a fair amount of fuel to be burned down stream of this
valve before the engine is starved.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar Engine stop cable / inverter power 2 fer

2019-09-03 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
John,

On the engine in this video you can see the solenoid linkage that attaches
to the fuel shutoff lever. You probably don't have a shutoff solenoid but
don't let that confuse you. The attachment to the engine fuel system is
identical.

https://youtu.be/mdHIt14l0R8

And the same lever is circled in this picture
https://drive.google.com/file/d/14C-AA-ajCZRKJiA0WhAAFBMRlY4XHY1g/view?usp=drivesdk

Using this lever is really the better way to kill the engine. It starves
the fuel. Any other way will leave unburnt fuel in and on the cylinders.
Over time it can build up, gum up, blow smoke on next start, leak into the
crankcase, Yada, Yada, Yada The method you found for killing the
engine is the decompression levers. These are nice in the event that you
need to start the engine with a low battery. During the off season you
should also "roll" the engine by pulling the engine stop cable while also
pulling the decompression levers and simultaneously running the starter.
Do until the low oil pressure alarm clears. Repeat once a month to keep
oil on the bearings and piston rings.

Another option for killing the engine is to simply put you hand over the
intake air pipe.

For repair of a broken stop cable I suggest buying a marine choke cable
replacement. I say marine in the hopes that it is SS cable. In all
likelihood it will be more robust and cheaper than the official Yanmar
part. Get the right length based on the existing length of the cable that
you pull out with the handlethen again if it does not look broken or
frayed then maybe the screw just came loose and can be reassembled.

As for the inverter, I need more details but it seems like a supply breaker
or fuse is blown. Maybe a disconnect is open or you have a loose cable.

Re: Stus-List Haul for Winter or not-do full-time in-water boat’s possibly suffer more from osmosis?

2019-09-03 Thread Edward Levert via CnC-List
I purchased my 1981 C&C 34 in October 2012. Previously she spent time in
Lake Champlain, the New River, NC, and Niceville, Fl before winding up in
New Orleans. The latter 3 home ports would indicate year round afloat. I
have hauled out annually for fresh anti fouling paint. During my ownership,
I have had only 1 blister exposed by annual sanding. This annual sanding
has not been down to the gel coat but should have revealed a blister
problem. My belief based on experience with a 1971 C&C 27 with many many
blisters is that if blisters haven't developed by now, your exposure will
be minimal.

For what it's worth, I use non synthetics oils and I wouldn’t think of not
change the filter with each oil change. When I installed the new engine in my

absolutely not! For the reasons already explained here.

Stus-List Dive boat fire and egress

2019-09-03 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I am sure you have all been reading about the 30+ people that died on the dive
boat that caught on fire. It is horrible reading and it really got me to
thinking about my own boat. I don’t do it so much now at my advanced age, but
throwing the forward hatch all the way open and climbing in and out of it was
pretty standard fare when we were kids.
I just made damn sure my family knows how to release the hatch supports and
climb out.
I also may get a boat smoke detector. I already have a CO detector. We had a
live-aboard powerboat go up this winter and the lady that was living on her
barely got out. The boat went up very fast.

Re: Stus-List engine oil

2019-09-03 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
The only safest answer is to follow the OEM recommendations. IF Rotella T
is in the OEM viscosity range and meets the recommended SAE specs then yes
you can use it. When changing the oil, it makes little sense to not change
the filter and yes the OEM typically recommends changing the oil at the end
of the season. There is no "harm" to the engine in changing the oil or
filter or both more often than needed or recommended

2019-09-03 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Listers,

As most of you already know, I have moved from the soon-to-be-cold Northeast to
sunny Sarasota. The process of moving a home and an office made for a very
difficult premise of moving the Enterprise as well.

So, after an exhaustive search for a delivery captain, I chose fellow-lister
Captain Rick Brass.

Rick, along with his two crew, Jim and Chuck, left City Island on August 4,
with every detail meticulously planned, with all sorts of contingencies along
the way — where to stop for fuel, where to go in the ICW, where to stay out and
go all night, marinas to get supplies, etc. And, of course, Rick provided me
with a website to track the Enterprise’s movements with his SPOT transmitter.

Were there mechanical and weather delays? Sure. But all were handled expertly
and Rick always kept the safety of his crew and the Enterprise foremost in his
planning. And, unlike many other delivery captains out there, he also kept an
eye on my costs.

Also, apparently things can get pretty boring on the ICW, so his crew would
spend their time doing maintenance. They tightened the engine mounts, adjusted
the steering cables, cleaned the interior, and fixed little odds and ends.

I could not be happier. The Enterprise has arrived at her new home at Venice
Yacht Club and in better condition than when she departed. See:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EDiZvBtXUAEaFPQ?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

So, should you ever be in the need for a delivery and want someone who is a C&C
enthusiast, a seasoned captain, and who will do the trip at a price point that
will put other services to shame, look no further than Rick and his team. I
cannot recommend them enough.

All the best,

Edd

You will never go wrong with a fresh oil change before haul out for winter
storage. Just make sure the engine is warm before you drain it and then run
it up to usual operating temp to circulate the new oil before you shut down
for winter storage. Shell Rotella is very good oil. I would advise to use
a non synthetic. And you will never go wrong with a filter change either so
by all means yes change it when you change the oil. Choose a good rated
filter. I use NAPA gold on my Universal M4-30 diesel and a multigrade
diesel lube oil from Canadian Tire or Walmart. Something like 15w-40 will
be just fine.

Re: Stus-List engine oil

2019-09-03 Thread Gary Russell via CnC-List
OK, Richard, I'm in.
Oil:
You can never be wrong following the manufacturer's recommendations
(Yamaha). The biggest advantage of the new synthetic oils is longevity.
Most of us change the oil and filter every fall and put very few hours on
our engines. Therefore, longevity is not that important. Of course, yeah
I know, there are other advantages of the synthetics, but the
manufacturer's recommendations are king and therefore I use their
recommendations. When synthetics first came out, some manufacturers would
void your warranty for not using the recommended lubricants. I use
synthetics in my cars, but they were designed for them.

Filters:
Again the manufacturer's recommendations should be followed, but most
of us do not put anywhere near enough hours on our auxiliaries to warrant
changing the filter more than once a season.

Recommendations:
Yanmar recommends changing the oil every 100 hours and the filter
every 300 hours for a GM or HM engine. Shell Rotella is one of the oils
they recommend. Otherwise, change oil and filter every fall, so the acid
and moisture-laden lubricants from the summer don't sit in the engine all
winter. Save your money for a good glass of bourbon. That's what I do.

All the best,

Richard,If the Rotella oil has the same rating required  by your manual, you
should be covered. Just dont use oil that is for a gas engine. I did this in an
old VWdiesel car. Within 1000 miles i was rebuilding the engine. I use Delo 400
in my yanmar, because I bought 10 gallons for half price. If you wanted you
could change you filter monthly. Doing it once a year, your oil every other is
in MHO ok. The biggest thing we can do for our diesel engines is run them at
full cruise power for at least an hour on a regular basis. I say, because a
friend would run his diesel just long enough to get in and out of the marina.
Never letting the engine get fully warmed up. It finally died from a severe
lack of compression.  Doug Mountjoy Sv Rebecca Leah C&C LF39253-208-1412Port

What weight?  I have a 3/4 oz and a 1.5 oz out in the barn (I gifted the
1/2 oz to Glenn Gambell for his 36).  They came off our old Redwing 35

for the Asym on our 35-3.
