Re: Stus-List Boom Bail for 30-2

2019-09-23 Thread Rich via CnC-List
I have a C 35-3 and moved my traveler aft off the doghouse to behind the
companionway. My sailmaker made a strop made of amsteel. Super strong. I simply
tied a thin line from end of boom to strop to keep it from sliding forward.
Works great.

That is an interesting thought! How do you keep yours from slipping down the

Re: Stus-List The Low drag Prop saga is over!

2019-09-23 Thread Wade Glew via CnC-List
Hi Everyone,

been following the folding prop thread with interest. I had a Michegan
Sailor 16 x 10 R fixed prop for 10 years. It was fine for all purposes
except sailing where it was like towing a drogue. I changed this year to a
FlexoFold 16 x 11 and my observations are these:

1. FlexoFold has a bit more vibration across the rpm spectrum but not much
and I can live with that if it gets the job done. Install was a breeze
which means I didn't have to hire anyone.
2. with the Michegan sailor at 2200 - 2400 rpm I would cruise in relatively
flat water at 5-5.2 knots. With the FlexoFold I now cruise (same RPM) at
6 - 6.3 knots. I haven't tried for maximum RPM
3. reverse seems fine though not heavily tested in wind etc.
4. sailing, particularly in light winds feels like a different boat with
the FlexoFold (in a positive way!)

My question is what is the resultant engine change with this different
prop? Knowing that Yanmar diesels like to be worked hard, is this
FlexoFold prop with faster boat speed but same RPM making my engine work
harder or not? Do I have to drive the rpm higher? Should I care about any
of this?

many thanks,Wade

ps. incidentally, I took off, cleaned, tef gelled and reconnected every
wire I could find on the boat and my electrical system is dreamy again
. thanks to all :-)

Hi there,

Not exactly what you're looking for but I laboured over the flexible / rigid
panel installation and finally went with flexible. I thought others may be
interested also.

- 2 x 100 watt panels
- 2 x nylon straps pulled tight side to side over the bimini
- panel edges protected covered with pipe insulation to protect bimini
- panels zap strapped to bimini
- pool noodle squeezed over front edge of panels to "flatten" the fore-aft
profile

5 minutes to remove and 10 minutes to replace. I leave them on April to
November and will stow below for the winter.

Re: Stus-List Keel Gouge Repair

2019-09-23 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
No picture but the repair should be simple.

   1. Grind out the gouge and margins to bright lead
   2. Immediately apply neat (unthickened) epoxy by rubbing it on with a
ScotchBrite pad. This will remove any surface oxidation and coat the lead
   with epoxy.
   3. Fill the with epoxy thickened with colloidal silica.
   4. Sand to contour being careful not to expose lead. If you do, repeat
   step 2.
   5. Fair with AwlFair or equivalent.
   6. Paint

While you're at it, inspect the entire keel for knicks, gouges, etc. The
trailing edge of the keel should be straight and faired to 1/4 inch width.

Stus-List Keel Gouge Repair

2019-09-23 Thread Luke Wolbrink via CnC-List
Hello all,

While headed up the river to take Zella (35-3) out for the season (yes, I
know it's early) I hit some sort of underwater obstruction at about 4kts.
Took a chunk out of the keel with it as you can see in the photo. Any
suggestions on how to repair? Just clean up the edges and fill it with
thickened epoxy and fair it? For those of you worried, I'm well aware of
the dangers of working with/around lead so proper precautions will be taken.

Thanks,

Re: Stus-List Flooded Batteries

2019-09-23 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
I'm not sure where you are located. How cold are your winters

The colder the winter the less often you need to recharge the batteries
over winter (this is assuming you do no ever use the batteries when they
are cold). This also assumes you start the storage period with the
batteries fully charged. If you have cold winters, or even coolish winters
there is no good reason to take the batteries out of the boat.

Self discharge slows as the temperature drops.

Does that help?

Re: Stus-List Flooded Batteries

2019-09-23 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Callisto currently has 4x 6V golf cart batteries from Costco, but is wired
for six: two under the after quarterberth, two at the bottom of the hanging
locker beside the engine, and two in a custom box in port cockpit locker.
Never any problem starting our 4 cyl VW diesel (850CCA specified), even
when battery voltage is low (as low as 11.8V) from fridge running at anchor
after a few cloudy days. We have 150W of solar, no shore charger, and two
60A alternators on the engine, one with a manually adjustable regulator to
allow for higher charging voltage, although I usually leave it on auto.

Although the wiring done by a previous owner is a bit scary, it all seems
to work well. The batteries in the cabin aren't vented, which is something
I might try to resolve this winter. I'm not sure if just venting to the
area under the cockpit is sufficient? I have considered adding a fan to
exhaust some heat from the fridge and engine area to improve fridge
efficiency.

Re: Stus-List Flooded Batteries

2019-09-23 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Brian,

I used to do that (removed the batteries, take them home, etc.), but
apparently, if they are properly charged, they would last the whole winter. If
anything, the low temperatures are good for their health. If they are not self
discharging, they would not freeze. make sure, though, that they are fully
disconnected from the boat. A small parasitic load can destroy the batteries
over that 5-6 month period.

For the last 4 years I keep the batteries in the boat and I did not notice any
difference. At the spring commissioning, they are still at about 85%-90% SoC.

Stus-List Flooded Batteries

2019-09-23 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
There is no simple answer to this.
I’ll start with the easy part – for *non life-cycle cost* issues, flooded loses
big time.
We used to have flooded batteries and during Hurricane Charlie one of them
broke open. The smell was an extra special treat and then some and that is
before you add salt water to the mix, which gives you some nice chlorine.
Flooded batteries have acid that can spill, can produce corrosive gases, will
produce hydrogen that can explode, and can be all around dangerous and nasty.
Obviously people do use flooded batteries on boats, although AFAIK you cannot
on a racing boat anymore, but they take some care to secure properly. In our
boats the batteries can be right under where someone sleeps, so this is really
important.
On to life cycle costs. I am leaving lithium batteries out of this whole
discussion, that is a big $$$ commitment and is an ever changing field right
now.
Long story short – Golf cart batteries win and win big on life cycle costs. 2 6
volt 220 AH golf cars are probably around $200 total for both and are designed
to be cycled and abused. You will get the most AH for the $$ no doubt and many
a cruiser uses them. If you are not racing and have a place to safely secure
them, I would give them strong consideration. The various car battery type
marine batteries in my experience don’t last all that long unless they are a
true deep cycle. Trojan makes some and I am not sure who else is a good brand
today for that. It has been a long time since I bought wet batteries.

Moving on to solid/gelled electrolyte batteries, they have several advantages
and some big disadvantages too. First off, there is more than one kind. Gel
cells are NOT AGMs and AGMs are not gel cells! I have gel cells on my boat.
They cost more than AGMs and have about twice the cycle life of the commonly
sold AGM batteries. They are hard to find, expensive, and have specific
charging requirements. Overcharging kills them quickly, you need battery
chargers designed for them and an alternator regulator that can be set for
them. They have the advantage of long life if treated well, have no liquid to
leak, will not off-gas unless badly abused, and work mounted at any angle. One
very nice thing about gels is they have a very low self-discharge rate. Wet
cells usually lose around 10% a month and gels are more like 1%. Back before I
had shore power or solar I had no issue winterizing in December and starting
the engine in March even after using the occasional light over the winter with
no charging.

AGMs are another solid/gelled electrolyte type of battery and are far easier to
find than gels. They usually have about half the cycle life of gels and also
have specific charging requirements that are NOT THE SAME as gel batteries.
They are far more tolerant of higher charging voltages. What kills them is not
being topped off to 100%. If you have no shore power and no solar, they will
have a short life unless you motor everyplace you go. AGMs can be found
relatively cheap if you know where to look. East-Penn Deka makes all the West
Marine batteries and they also do (or did, haven’t checked recently) make a
private label Group 31 AGM for Sam’s Club that they were selling for less than
50% of the West Marine price for the exact same thing. I think Sam’s labeled it
an “Energizer”.
