others in the great lakes are experiencing the same if not worse. With the

Re: Stus-List winterizing a 29-2

2019-11-24 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
I would run the AF through the engine and the fresh water system and then push
it out using compressed air. The shop vac might work, as well.

There is an easy way to run your engine on the hard - use a 5 gal bucket in the
cockpit, fill it with AF, attach a hose extension to your intake and put it
into the bucket, run engine until all AF is gone. I use 5 gal to be sure - you
don't want the AF to be diluted and you have to push out all the water from the
lift muffler.

For the fresh water, I don't pour AF into the tank - it would smell, and you
are encouraging the growth in it. Rather, empty the tank, purge the water from
all hoses using the compressed air (shop vac??) and then disconnect the hose
from the intake on the pump, attach a spare length of hose to it (I bought a
spare connector that threads onto the pump), put that hose into a bucket of AF
and run through all faucets until solid pink comes out. When done, again purge
all remnants of the AF from the hoses using pressured air. An RV store would
have a adapter that you can attach to your air compressor (<$10); amazon has
them, as well (Camco 36153 or 36143).

If you have a water heater, install the bypass, so that AF won't run through it.

Make sure that you don't forget your bilge pump(s) (both automatic and manual),
potentially a pump for the ice box and any other pump you might have. If you
have a shower sump - AF should go there.

Good luck

Marek

I run engine coolant antifreeze through the engine and the head. Alcohol-based
antifreeze is hard on rubber parts and seals.

I used to use plumbing antifreeze (rated for potable water systems) in the
onboard water supply system but found it difficult to eliminate the smell/taste
afterwards. Now when I do it, I use a shop vac to suck the lines dry and run
the water pump into the vac as well.

2019-11-24 Thread Jeffrey A. Laman via CnC-List
Ludington Yacht Club, along the east shore of L. Michigan has had a very
difficult time with water levels this year and last. If the water continues to
rise, it will close the club. The docks are floating, but the LYC grounds
around the building are flooded. The parking lot has been raised maybe 18
inches, but on some days floods. The club was closed for several weeks at the
beginning of the summer due to water threatening electrical panels and backing
up sewage. Both have been remedied. Access to the docks and building from
the parking lot has been via newly constructed (temporary?) 30ft to 50ft
walkways built about 2.5 feet above grade (flooded by at least a foot of
water). If the water rises much more, the club will have to close.

Another poster indicated this is all due to lack of evaporation and cold temps
resulting in ice cover. That's half the equation. The L. Mich drainage basin
received excessive rainfall this past summer which drove up water levels. So,
two factors -- rain and evaporation.

This has been great for the shallow channels that the Army Corp won't dredge
due to recreational use only, but not good for a lot of docks. There has also
been increased danger for swimmers and folks walking out on piers -- the waves
wash over the concrete piers with very little wind.

Actually, I made my Delran washer the other way around:

Got a square of 1/8” Delran from a buddy who owns a machine shop (actually, I
asked him where I could buy some and he said “Here, take this scrap section.
It’s too small for the things I normally need to make.”)

Attached it to a piece of scrap plywood with a couple of spring clamp

Cut the center hole with a hole saw

Used the same pilot hole to cut out the washer

I have enough material left to make at least one more washer if I ever need it

Bev-
I normally put the raw water intake hose into a gallon of antifreeze - closing
thru
-hull first! - turn on engine. Repeat. Takes a bit over 1 Gal to run thru the
2GM.
I haven’t used the onboard water for years - but have done similar by putting
into tank and running the pumps until “pink”
