Do I have to google the controlling depth of the Erie canal? Step up, New
Yorkers. What's up there?

I have thought of taking the Whaler up there and putting it in for a week
vacation. We could go from town to town and stay at B Also I think there is
a canal around Toronto maybe that is good for that kind of thing. I’ll need
some seat cushions though, I did 60 miles in the Whaler and ended up a bit sore

Re: Stus-List Great Lakes

2019-11-26 Thread Jim Reinardy via CnC-List
Joe,

Definitely Lake Winnebago, the city of Oshkosh is on the west shore of it.
It's a good sized inland lake, about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, but
shallow with sand bars and other navigation hazards. Challenging for
sailboats, lots of shoal drafts and swing keels there.

The Whaler would not be much fun on Lake Michigan most days, it's rarely that
calm. We occasionally get pontoon boats that decide to rent slips in our
marina. They never leave the breakwater and usually don't renew.

If you get to Milwaukee, you are always welcome on Firewater too!

I have been to Chicago many times and seen that end of Lake Michigan. Flying to
Oshkosh for the airshow the straight line is across Lake Michigan, but that
water is COLD even in the summer so we swung south of Chicago and then back
north. There was a lake off to our right while heading up north to Oshkosh.
Lake Winnebago maybe
We may show up and bug you all for a sail, it sounds fun :)
The Whaler is miserable in any chop and wet too, so I think a canal is about
all I would want to try with it.

I have thought of taking the Whaler up there and putting it in for a week
vacation. We could go from town to town and stay at B Also I think there is
a canal around Toronto maybe that is good for that kind of thing. I’ll need
some seat cushions though, I did 60 miles in the Whaler and ended up a bit sore
from sitting on a board.

Stus-List Great Lakes

2019-11-26 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
I have been to Chicago many times and seen that end of Lake Michigan. Flying to
Oshkosh for the airshow the straight line is across Lake Michigan, but that
water is COLD even in the summer so we swung south of Chicago and then back
north. There was a lake off to our right while heading up north to Oshkosh.
Lake Winnebago maybe
We may show up and bug you all for a sail, it sounds fun :)
The Whaler is miserable in any chop and wet too, so I think a canal is about
all I would want to try with it.

Joe, while the whaler would work in the Erie Canal or the Trent Severn Canal
system, it doesn’t give you much exposure to the Great Lakes. If you are on the
Great Lakes and the weather picks up, it can get quite rough. The waves are
close together and steep, without the large swells you get ocean sailing.
Fortunately we usually get steady light winds in the summer. Georgian Bay,
where we keep Crazy Legs is approx 120miles x 50miles. As a generalization,
north is a mine field with shield rock and the south can be sandy beaches
mostly covered in homes and cottages. I prefer the north. My invitation from
the rendezvous has no expiry date. Pick a place you want to sail, I am sure you
will find a C there. Use Google Earth and check it out, start with the North
Chanel. You must have flown over the lakes at some point? Len

I've done several trips on the NY State canals, they really are a
working museum, well worth the investment in time/money.  You can rent
40' canal boats in Albany, travel in style for a weekend or week-long
trip.  The Champlain Canal is really nice, through the Adirondacks to
Lake Champlain.  NY State put a lot of $$ into developing waterfronts in
the canal towns in the early 2000's, makes for good cruising.

I have always wanted to see the Great Lakes. All our lakes down my way are made

any port towns or anything like that, just water and houses.

Troy is a little to far upstream to take a mast down. Most do it at Hop O Nose
in Catskills or for the DIY Type at Castleton Boat Club. All stop at the
beautiful town of Waterford whether north or south bound. We spent a month
there this past spring waiting for the canals to open. Thirty plus boats
headed up either the Erie or Champlain

For tourism, portions of it may be great. For commercial shipping between New
York City and Buffalo, I believe it’s a thing of the past. Portions can still
be seen along I 86 between Erie and Corning. I suspect it’s too shallow for my
boat.

I’ll look into it. Good idea.

If they let out too much water it impedes freighter traffic and would flood
Montreal .
