Re: Stus-List Self quarantine on your boat?

2020-03-18 Thread Ian Matthew via CnC-List
Here's the official answer to those of us in the SF Bay area:

*Am I allowed to leave my home while this Order is in effect?
*

*The intent of this Order is to ensure that people remain in their
residences and minimize social interactions outside of their immediate
family unit. However, you may leave your residence for reasons specified in
the Order. These reasons include ensuring the health and safety of yourself
and your family, engaging in outdoor activity that does not involve close
contact with other people, obtaining services and supplies for yourself and
your family, and to perform employment functions that are permissible under
the Order.*

As I read this working on the boat is an “*outdoor activity that does not
involve close contact with other people". *So I guess I’m OK to work on
the boat!

Hmmmneed to do the spring maintenance coat of Cetol on the teak,
install a 120 vac receptacle with USB ports, wax the starboard side (port

Wonder if the marina has disinfected my finger pier?

Thinking about a 14 day COVID-19 cruise. What's the "social distance" in
an anchorage? 6 boat lengths?

Is there a reverse Q flag? i.e. I'm not sick but Stay Away! Or should I
just fly my Smith & Wesson flag?

You think we'll see a Generation Q (quarantine) start in about 9 months?

I think I got cabin fever. Got to keep a sense of humor during these
trying times.

Stay safe, all.

Club has closed. Their Wednesday night races are cancelled.

On the other hand, I just saw this on the NOYC forum about a double
handed race this Saturday out of Tammany Yacht Club on the east end of Lake
Pontchartrain:

"Two - social distancing: check. Outdoors with fresh lake breeze: check.
Great exercise: check. Sailors likely to maintain a blood alcohol at/above
virocidal levels: check. Hell this could be the answer to COVID-19
conundrum!

All seriousness aside, the club will be closed in compliance with local
guidelines. The SI's wil be posted on the TYC website soon and no live
skipper's meeting will be held. So seek out your most hygenic crew that has
no cough or fever and plan to have a fun and healthy Saturday."

All

same here in Savannah. The Savannah Yacht Club has closed the Club House
restaurant, bars & pool. However, the tennis courts & docks remain open,
but the board of stewards has instated the no non-member / guests allowed
on the property. One of the other sailing clubs is hosting their annual St.
Patrick's Regatta (this club does not have a shore side facility) this
weekend and now our Club refuses to allow me or any of the other owners
competing crews to cross the property to board our boats. Since about 50%
of the boats entered are berthed at our club and may very not race so it
dampen the turn out to the point that it will damage the regatta for this
small club's finances.

Update, the Swiftsure has just been cancelled. I can't imagine the PNW race
in May will continue, so that doesn't leave much hope for the Vic Maui this

Major races are being cancelled here, so far the Patos Island and Southern
Straits (a VicMaui qualifier) have fallen, in addition to club racing. I am
hopeful the VicMaui in July will still go on, but I guess the next

Re: Stus-List Rudder axial play

2020-03-18 Thread Gary Russell via CnC-List
In the case of Kaylarah ('90 C 37+) which should be the same design, the
rudder hangs on two ball bearings on a transverse shaft that sit on top of
a round metal bearing plate on top of the deck. The only thing that
restricts upward motion is a Delrin shim washer that sits between the top
of the rudder and the bottom rudder bearing.

Re: Stus-List Rudder axial play

2020-03-18 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Ours is set up like Chuck's, thick derelin washer at the bottom between the
blade and hull, and rollers on an axle that passes through the rudder tube,
rolling on a metal disk at the top, all hidden from view under the Radial
Drive Wheel (quadrant).

One possibility is your rollers are missing from the little axle Radial
Drive Wheel? That would introduce an extra 1/2" or so of play.

>From the factory, the rudder tube is continuous, from the hull to the deck
so the distance between them is fixed. Some boats have had the rudder tube
cut to insert an Autopilot Tiller Arm. In some cases that could introduce
a change in the length of the rudder tube dimension as it now has a gap.
Has your rudder tube been cut for an Autopilot Tiller Arm? Just a thought,

Ken H.
