Re: Stus-List Stupid Sailing Trick Contest

2020-05-28 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi Joe

In 2014 I was tied up to one dock on stbd side and then moved that evening to
another dock port side to. Somehow missed a line on deck tied midships to
stanchion base. Next day when starting engine after sailing was reminded about
the line.

The good thing is that insurance pays for stupid (at least to a degree).
Repair bent strut, replace shaft, coupler, cutlass bearing (shaft and bearing
due to wear), dripless shaft seal, repair fibreglass around stern tube and strut

Lines wrapped around prop and shaft can be an expensive problem. The shaft and
cutlass bearing were on the to do list anyway but the rest was not. $100/hr
labour adds up fairly quickly but at least I learned some names for boat parts
I was previously unfamiliar with!

Has anyone got me beat for 2020?

I backed out of my slip right onto the dinghy painter, which somehow didn't
float well enough and wrapped right around the prop shaft :(

After a refreshing swim to unwind that, I went up the river to fix a mooring
and fixed the WRONG ONE. I got a phone call thanking me from my buddy who was
wondering who got his stuck shackle loose, he was dreading the job. I also
discovered either barnacles grow WAY faster than anyone ever realized or the
diver missed a spot last week.

Re: Stus-List Stupid Sailing Trick Contest

2020-05-28 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
I started off the 2020 season by launching my boat, motoring to my slip, and
bashing the stem against a dock cable winch, putting a couple quarter-size
gouges in my nice new paint job. Since then, knock on wood, I haven’t
performed any stupid sailing tricks. Except disappearring one of my lazarette
padlocks, necessitating a shuffling of locks on my dock box.

2020-05-28 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
My morning got off to a similar start. Stayed the night on the boat. Halfway
out, as fog closed in, dinghy motor quit and would not start and had to row the
rest of the way.Dinghy rows well, but I am the furthest boat from the dock
in the mooring field. Plus side- I found the boat in the fog with no problem.
Fog and rain in the morning. Changed into Gortex pants to return to the dock.
Got to car and could not find keys. Searched through all bags multiple times
and could not find keys. Gave up and searched dinghy then rowed out to boat
and searched again. No keys. Rowed back in and found keys in pants pocket in
bag I had searched earlier. Always a plus side- at least I got a good upper
body workout. Dave

I had challenges in disassembly. Look at a drawing of the components first,
there are circlips on the shaft in an unusual location. The shaft won't
come out if they're in place.
