Re: Stus-List Replacement LED for circuit breaker panel?

2020-05-29 Thread Peter Fell via CnC-List
Quite possible that they are LEDs at that age, and I can't see it being
anything other than 12V DC. My other hobby is vintage audio and LEDs were
used for indicator lights right back into the 70s. I was just working on a
Yamaha stereo receiver built in 1974 and it has a couple LEDs for power and
stereo FM indicators.

In most of the marine suppliers around here, you can buy Blue Sea
replacement panel LEDs and a couple other brands (Sea Dog perhaps?) already
set-up to run on 12V DC. I know the Blue Sea come with a 'holder' for the
bulb and come in different colours. I've used one or two when I'm out of
red LEDs or need one-off of some other funky colour for my audio projects!
Rather expensive way to do it though!

Most of the LEDs I use I go the lazy route, rather than assemble my own,
and buy off Amazon pack of 50, prewired with pigtail and resistor for
$12 -$18, and will run off about 8 to 15V. With the fixed resistors
intensity will vary with the voltage. Cheap LEDs, probably not the best
quality, but so far they've worked fine. The pigtails are ridiculously thin
wire - maybe 28 gauge (but then again so is the wire on the larger red LED
I picked up in a marine store for my compass light!).

Note that if you are replacing an indicator light for an AC panel then it
will run on 120V AC. Blue Sea sells separate LEDs for that, and there will
be 2 differences. 1st, the resister will be a higher value and 2nd they
will probably have something like a 1N4004 rectifier diode wired in, to
block reverse of the AC cycle. LEDs are diodes, but they aren't designed to
block a lot of reverse voltage ... they will break down fairly quickly.
There may also be a small capacitor in the circuit to reduce flicker (the
LED on AC is only lit 60-times a second ... you'll see it flicker if you
look indirectly at it).

For the DC application only the resistor is needed. However the LED will be
polarized, so test it before any soldering. If it doesn't light up, reverse
the connection. AC will work regardless of how you connect it.

Re: Stus-List Replacement LED for circuit breaker panel?

2020-05-29 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I have not investigated specifically for myself because they always looked
like standard through hole LEDs from the '80s. As a kid I always did all
sorts of experiments with them. The bare LEDs I played with were about
3/16ths and you could buy sockets for them too. When I looked online just
now, I realize that they are sold in metric diameters. Based on available
metric sizes I would guess that they are 5mm.

LED
https://images.app.goo.gl/y4kJTgfW5Ry1A55c9

Socket
https://images.app.goo.gl/nfJ8zeVRdhPAo2Ey8

Generally speaking, LEDs by themselves are designed to emit light between 1
and 3 volts. Much higher than 3 and the LED will burn out. It was common
to directly solder a resistor to one of the legs of the LED and sell the
combo as a "x.xx volt LED". The resistor would come exposed or sometimes
heat shrinked to give a more finished look.

Calcs
https://www.evilmadscientist.com/2012/resistors-for-leds/

Armed with that info I think you can do a little disassembly to determine
exactly what you have and then order online. Let me know if you get stuck.

I don't think indicator lights that old are LEDs. Try looking for non LED
lights. The current draw is pretty low.

Hey Bruce--
I had similar problems with several of my 25 year old panel indicator lights
and could not find a physicallyl identical size
I eventually had them replaced with smaller Blue Sea indicators by an
electrician who replaced all of them.I think he mounted them on another strip
and mounted the strip behind the panels.

Re: Stus-List Local knowledge - Oregon Inlet

2020-05-29 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
Hi Joel,

Coincidentally I was just looking yesterday at NOAA Chart 12204
(https://charts.noaa.gov/PDFs/12204.pdf
, 39th edition dated June 2018, last
corrected 10/8/2019).

Its note B about the Oregon Inlet refers to the USCG Fifth District’s Local
Notices to Mariners at https://navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lnmDistrict=5
. The latest of those,
https://navcen.uscg.gov/pdf/lnms/lnm05212020.pdf
, and Chart 12204’s Note B,
refer to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington, North Carolina District
hydrographic survey information at
http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/HydrographicSurveys.aspx
.

The latest Army Corps survey maps of the Oregon Inlet are at
https://www.saw.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/Hydrographic-Surveys/Manteo-Oregon-Inlet/

.
The bar was last surveyed May 11th and shows a depth of 8 feet over the bar:
https://saw-nav.usace.army.mil/MANTEO-OREGON/OREGON_INLET_EAST/Oregon_Inlet_Bar.pdf

.
The map of the Oregon Inlet Bridge, updated May 21, shows 14-16 feet of water
in the channel under the bridge:
https://saw-nav.usace.army.mil/MANTEO-OREGON/OREGON_INLET_EAST/Oregon_Inlet_Bridge.pdf

.
West of the Oregon Inlet Bridge, the map shows at least 12 feet of water to get
to the Old House Channel, and was last updated March 17th:
https://saw-nav.usace.army.mil/MANTEO-OREGON/OREGON_INLET_WEST/Oregon_Inlet_West.pdf

.

With your 7’ draft, it might be dicey getting across that bar. Might want to
look at the latest maps as your trip date approaches, and call the USCG Fifth
District or Army Corps Wilmington District.

Cheers,
Randy

Rod,

You might check w/ Rob at Southshore Yachts as he inherited all the
design paperwork upon C demise.  (905 468 4340)  He or Cory would be a
good source.  I don't know about bushings but my C 29 MkI has nylon
washers riding on the shaft, not that I have looked but I have spares
gleaned from the inventory that came back from Kiel when they sold the
German operation.  There is also a grease fitting which never gets any
love up under the stern counter.  Mine is a tiller version and most are
wheels so your mileage may vary.

Hello Mike,

I replaced my tank with a Kracor 28 gallon, which fit in there nicely. Used
the original rubber elbow to go into the fill, a little tight, but do-able. I
was trying to find the model# but I can’t find it, can only find info on the
Kracor Holding tank.

Since Yamaha bought them, the seem to be more difficult to deal with. I would
think Moeller would have something similar.

Re: Stus-List Diesel Filter

2020-05-29 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
FYI – it doesn’t hurt to use 2 vacuum gauges, one before the filter and one
after. I was experiencing high vacuum and shutdowns and after I installed the
second gauge, I found high vacuum on BOTH of them. It wasn’t the filter that
was clogged, it was the pickup tube in the tank. The filter’s contribution to
the problem is the difference between the gauges ;)
My clog turned out to be rubber pieces from the fuel fill hose, it was slowly
dissolving and dropping bits of rubber into the tank. Sometimes they would suck
onto the fuel pickup and sometimes they would drop back off.

Wade,

Look at the picture of a 500 series racor in the link below. The factory top
has a t handle which is used to tighten the lid. The vacuum gauge which Joe
linked replaces that t-handle. The t arms are not used to sense pressure -
just for tightening the lid.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/172954061164

BTW: these 500 series are notorious for being easily over tightened which warps
the lid and causes leaks.

The 500 series is 60gph which would be close to 60 times the flow capacity
required for any one of our engines. Even with a 2 micron filter I would not
expect much if any vacuum being formed, though it should be noted that the
vacuum represents the effort required to "lift" the fuel out of the tank AND
the effort required to suck the fuel through the filter. Yanmar typically
rates their engines for up to 10 feet of lift. Diesel is 34" per psi so 10
feet = ~3.5 psi. Even with no filter element installed the vacuum for 10 feet
of vertical lift of diesel fuel would amount to 100 inH2O, 3.5psia or 7 inHg.

What is a normal pressure? What pressure reading makes you decide to change
filters? Are the lined just clamped with small hose clamps or what?

You can save a lot of $$$ in unneeded filter changes and get advanced warning
when you do need to change one.

I have some old crud in my tank, but where I can see it through the hole for
the sender, the bits I can see are pretty well stuck to the bottom of the tank
(and there are not many of them). That said, the boat had sat at the dock for
+/- 6 years before I got her, and we have run 150 gallons or so of fuel through
the boat in the last 4 years.

I change my Racor every year, and I used to change the one on the engine every
year as well. This time, I'm going to let the engine mounted one go another
year. We still get a fine layer of black "grit" at the bottom of the racor
over the year, but it does not appear to hinder the running of the engine.

I'd rather swap out a $20 filter once a year than risk the engine shutting down
as I go through a bridge opening with 3 kts. of current.

To each their own,

Bruce
