Re: Stus-List Steaming and Deck Light

2020-07-28 Thread Randy Stafford via CnC-List
I installed one of the less expensive MarineBeam steaming/deck lights on
Grenadine’s mast before the start of the 2019 season, as part of an overhaul of
the mast’s lights and wiring (switched from incandescent to LED, switched to
proper marine-grade wiring).

The electronic part of the light has been good. I got the red/white switchable
model, and use the red in combination with my blue LED spreader light from West
Marine, gives me some real disco-looking fuchsia sails at night.

However the housing is sub-par. You fasten it to the mast with screws through
the holes in those plastic “wings”. Earlier this season a halyard fouled on
the tip of the starboard wings and tore it off the screw, leaving the fixture
flapping from the port screw and making an even bigger fouling hazard. I’ve
done a couple quick fixes with tape, but will have to drill more holes in the
damaged wing (and my mast) to properly secure the thing.

I’d look for one made of sturdier materials.

Cheers,
Randy Stafford

Re: Stus-List Steaming and Deck Light

2020-07-28 Thread Matthew via CnC-List
Brian:

I forget what I had on my 34, although I believe the deck lights were
mounted on the spreaders.

The mast on my 42 came with a stainless housing that mounted wimpy Perko
lights (top and bottom). Rather than replace the Perko fixtures/bulbs, I
went in a different direction. Just above the housing I installed a Hella
LED steaming light. Although they call it a masthead light, I believe it
was this one:

https://www.hellamarine.com/en/products/navigation-lamps/masthead/3-nm-navil
ed-masthead-led-navigation-lamp.html

Just below the old housing I installed a Hella LED flood, which will light
up the entire foredeck (and may be overkill):

https://www.hellamarine.com/en/products/floodlights/round-work-lights/module
-70-led-floodlights.html

Installation was straightforward, they seem to be working fine. I sealed
the old housing and use it for excess wire storage (outside the mast). As I
recall, I also installed a cage (or whatever they call it) to protect the
lights from halyards.

Stus-List Black liquid out of exhausted

2020-07-28 Thread Mazen Aziz via CnC-List

Hi everyone,

Hope all is going well. Quick question, I just got the survey done as mentioned
before and boat is in a great shape. One problem though is there is black
liquid (maybe oil) that comes out of the exhaust when I accelerate and high
rpm. Surveyor mentioned That it might be a black old rubber somewhere in the
engine. Any suggestion where I should start to troubleshoot?

The yard master mentioned it might be the propellor size. I’m changing the
cutlass bearing and attached is the prop pic/size. I also have a folding prop
which is 16” and I believe that’s what came with the boat originally? Anyone
experienced something like that before? Much appreciate your feedback

Hi Folks,

We looked at nearly a half dozen C boats this past weekend in RI. Nearly all

be worth looking at if you are interested. We decided it is still too small for
us, the v-berth is as small or smaller than our little O'Day 23 and that is
among the primary reasons for us to upgrade. That said, the decks scanned dry
with my moisture meter apart from a small area around where the jib cars have
been pulling up on the deck, about a 12-18" circle. The interior is in
phenomenal shape and the topside teak while needing varnish soon is also in
great shape. It basically has no electronics apart from a radar of the same
vintage as the boat. They seem desperate for offers and slip for the rest of
the season comes with it.

Take care of your topsides. So many sad boats...

decks scanned dry with my moisture meter apart from a small area

about a 12-18" circle. The interior is in phenomenal shape and
the topside teak while needing varnish soon is also in great
shape. It basically has no electronics apart from a radar of the
same vintage as the boat. They seem desperate for offers and
slip for the rest of the season comes with it.

Thanks!

Re the V-berth issue, small V-berths are a thing on a lot of C, mine
included. When we were kids my parents slept aft with the dinette folded
down into a large double. I never wanted to move aft, on a hot night the
forward hatch is right over my head and the hot engine very far away.
Believe it or not I had to buy a KING mattress for the v-berth, it is
short but very wide at the aft end. Some surgery with an electric
carving knife and now we sleep on 6" of memory foam.

If you can find a Landfall 43 somewhere you can practically get lost
below on that boat!

I just had an overheating issue on my A4. Last year I had the Moyer inline
water alarm purchased and put it on to find the flow was significantly
reduced. I didn't like that so I removed it. This year, put the boat in
water, opened seacock valve for cooling and this weekend after many days out
already and numerous hours on the motor, the valve seemed to close after an
hour of straight motoring. It appears the valve closed on its own. Not
sure how long its been slowing closing itself but I'm sure nothing could
have inadvertently closed it, I'm sure of it. I suspect the last bit of
movement went the fastest once it hit the almost horizontal position. The
handle is very smooth and easy to close and I suspect the vibration from the
engine dropped the handle to perpendicular position of the valve. I will be
putting the alarm back on in short order. I also put a small tie around the
handle to keep it vertical. Still very odd as this has never happened
before.

Joe Della Barba says it worked on his GX1500 so you should be good. There
should be a port on the back of the radio for the mic cord. You will need to
find a CT-100 23 ft cord to connect it. This cord is available at most

Pay it forward time …

Recently had a pin break off in the female end of our Ram mic 3. Asked on this
list and Joe Della Barba sent me a package for a donation to Stu. The package
contained the CT-100 cable that runs from radio to cockpit and a brand new
Standard Horizon VH-310 RAM mic. The cable replacement fixed my problem and
our existing Ram mic is now back in action and working perfectly. Big shout
out to Joe!

This leaves me with a Ram mic VH-310, and mounting bracket but no extra cable.
An email to Standard Horizon tech support confirms this model does not work on
VHF radios manufactured after 2013 (it does not on our GX2150 since that was
new in 2014).

If anyone has an older Standard Horizon VHF compatible with this mic it is
available for a donation to Stu.
