Hi mike
I appreciate your input
I’m hiring a professional that I’m going to help to reduce the cost
It not leaking inside
But there 30% humidity Between layers on 80% on the top deck is like that
and also the cockpit is wet
Should I install longer or bigger drain in the cockpit
The history of the boat was well cared when in use but been sitting to long
in the sun
So there lots of cracks
I’ll watch your videos
Or give me a call or text 1 905 818-1336

Nope, the halyards are run to blocks on the ring around the base of the mast,
then to the winches (originally) on the dorade boxes. And the 30-1 has the
tangs.

I believe on C&C 30-1 the halyards are run at the mast not at the cockpit in

tensioning at mast collar

My 30-1 is a '73 with lower numbers than Gary's and the halyards run from a
turning block in the mast directly to the winches.
I have no tangs in the mast, nor do I have any holes where they might have been
attached. I don't believe my boat came with the tangs originally for this
reason.

We have had extensive discussions on this list about the Boat US
(GEICO) policy that contains a provision greatly reducing the value of things
like masts on older boats. Steer clear of such policies for a 1980 boat.
Because of this, I ended going with Travelers, which was helpful and responsive.

I believe the MK1 and the Mk2 were set up the same.  Check the mast,
inside the cabin, for a thru hole about 6 to 8 inches below the cabin
top.  That is where the the tangs bolted to the mast. You also should
see a detente topside in the mast collar on either side of the mast,
which is where the tangs held the deck down.  If you have these
indications someone removed he tangs and thru bolts.

Joe,
Sorry to hear you can't launch your boat. I won't try to answer the C&C 30
specific questions.

What's the status of your Rudder? Engine?

Gelcoat is really polyester resin based, and paint is considered a better
protective cover for epoxy repairs.

Wet Decks:
There are several DIY articles on cncphotoalbum.com on redoing decks. The
pictures show a lot.
There are books also, like Don Casey or Niger Calder but YouTube is a great
resource if you learn how to search it. I'm still learning and the search
program seems to also get better at the same time. Anyway, suggest you go to
YouTube and search for "replace sailboat wet core" or Sailboat replace balsa
core"

I'll try and assemble my photos into something I can send you privately.

Re: Stus-List 1979 C&C 34: why hangers on thru-deck mast fitting?

2020-08-12 Thread Rob Ball via CnC-List
Bill has it right . . . . . The shrouds and mast compression are the worry . . .
On serious race boats (without a bulkhead at the mast) we had a vertical rod
beside the mast and even a diagonal strut from the mast step to the shrouds to
counteract the load.
I can’t remember the original 35 in this regard, but we didn’t have big
hydraulic backstays back then either . . . . . so I worry about the 35 . . . .
On the other hand, it has survived this long . . . . so . . . . .
After the new 35 (Mk III) we tabbed the bulkheads to the deck – which does the
job, but before that boat production, the deck just floated above the bulkheads
 . . . .

Re: Stus-List 1979 C&C 34: why hangers on thru-deck mast fitting?

2020-08-12 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
I think some are missing the point that Rob made the other day, the halyards
pulling on the deck are secondary to the Oil-canning effect of the shrouds
pulling the sides of the boat inward, forcing the deck up at the mast.

That is the primary purpose of those hangers. I removed them on my 39 because
they were a little annoying, and replaced them with a rod and turnbuckle right
through the front of the mast collar and tapped into the keel bolt directly
below.

I had seen this in later model boats, and it can just be left in place when the
mast is removed.

Re: Stus-List 1979 C&C 34: why hangers on thru-deck mast fitting?

2020-08-12 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Yes, unless your 35 has been modified, the upward loads on the 35-1 are
carried by the mast. The halyards exited the mast via a turning sheave and
ran horizontal to the deck. The turning blocks in the mast carried the
upward loading.

Now, if you or a previous owner modified the running rigging for the
halyards to turn using blocks on the collar or deck then you've created
upward loading on the deck.

When I re-configured Touche's running rigging to run aft to the cockpit, I
used Garhauer mast base turning blocks attached to the mast to ensure the
deck did not carry any upward loading. See:

I‘m in process of purchasing a 1980 C&C 34 but I’m being held up by insurance
provider.

My broker (specializing in marine insurance) has sent the clean survey and all
details to the insurance provider. Was supposed to be 2 days for approval… it’s
now stretching into 4 days and we can’t get a response from provider. I can’t
do a deal unless I know I can get vessel insured. Any insurers/brokers that you
think are great and responsive so I can get this deal done?

A little leery of trying the online quote-and-go options but maybe I should?
Any good redo’s?

I’m in Halifax, Nova Scotia if that matters.

Re: Stus-List Redo top deck mk1 30

2020-08-12 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi John

Am assuming that you are replacing wet or rotten balsa core. If that is the
case then please read on.

Lots of experience on this list how to do this. You can do the job from the
top or you can alternatively do this from the bottom. There are pros and cons
to each approach. From the bottom you do not affect the top gelcoat and non
skid which is a big bonus. However from the bottom is more difficult and
requires a bit more precision and experience IMO and usually you would need to
have a vacuum bagging kit (available from West Marine). From the top you have
gravity working for you rather than against you, all areas are far more
accessible and the overall job is simpler. I have always approached from the
top.

From the top you can either remove and reuse the top skin to mostly retain your
non-skid pattern or you can rebuild the top layer with epoxy or polyester
(fibreglass) and then paint with a product such as Interdeck or Kiwi Grip. You
can also roll on gelcoat to build up a texture if that is your preference.
Either from the top, the bottom, paint or gelcoat it will look good.

If you can stick to non-skid areas the job is much easier. Non-skid vs regular
gloss gelcoat is like Matt finish vs gloss finish in varnish and paint. Gloss
shows off imperfections much more readily than matt.

I have replaced core material in large sections around chain plates of our
former Niagara 26 (built the same as C&Cs of your generation and by the same
person) as well as cockpit floor on that boat and 14 different deck and cockpit
sections on our former J27 Nut Case. I have always done from the top as I was
shown how to do by a boat builder who routinely repaired decks on C&C 30s mark
1 for resale as well as C&C 27s and other boats.

The project has been documented on our web site
www.hoytsailing.com At the bottom of the page
click on the J27 Nut Case web site link and on that page look at projects.

I hope this helps a bit

Is better to paint the boat or finish with gelcoat

Is there one that last more the other?
Also in the cockpit instead of two little drain
Is it better to put a bigger or longer drain at the door?

David,
When the boat is sailing and heels over the shrouds and mast combination try
really hard to squeeze the two sides of the boat together and the deck to lift
up (off). It is VERY important to hold the deck down, and those straps are to
be bolted so the deck is held down. If the holes don't align with the holes in
the mast, then you can see that the deck is already rising up . . . not good.
With shrouds released try to get them aligned, but if it's impossible you can
create new holes in the straps an inch higher and then matching holes in the
mast.
The down rod in the Vee berth is there to take the load of the Baby Stay up on
deck. I'd tension it to a 'comfortable' amount.

Hi

Wonder if I have the mast set-up correctly. There are two staniless steel
straps hanging down port & starboard of the mast. They are bolted to the
thru-deck fitting, are about 10 inches long and a bolt hole in the bottom end
almost aligns with holes in the mast. Purpose and should the hangers be bolted
to the mast?

Also there's stainless steel rod nth a turnbuckle on the bottom end (in the
v-berth cabin) that connects the deck to the keel. Purpose and how to tune?

Re: Stus-List Repowering a C&C 36 to Electric?

2020-08-12 Thread Fitteral Mindspring via CnC-List
Did some additional research on the Thunderstruck and it seems like a pretty
good, reasonable and straightforward solution. Due to the slightly larger
displacement of the 36, I would probably need to step up to the ME1616 and run
it @48v for 12kW. Unfortunately this model has the added complexity of cooling
which I need to sort out.

Does anyone know of any resources for some of the more obscure specs for the 36
(prismatic coefficient, etc.)? I am trying to optimize the power required to
minimize the amount of solar and battery storage without underpowering the boat
or constraining myself to the marina. Still deliberating on whether to invest
in a serious battery bank now or start with the deep cycle and let the battery
technology evolve and/or price-points come down. This will obviously be driven
somewhat by the aforementioned power needs. Any advice on location(s) of the
batteries? Obviously I want to minimize the impact of current weight
distribution.

I am still considering “just” doing the head gasket as my primary option,
however the more I dig into it, the likelihood of it being pandora’s box once I
get her open seems to be pretty high, then what? In for a penny…I would prefer
to spend my time figuring out a potential electric solution, however I do want
to get her sailing.

David:

The two SS straps are your 'mast tangs'.they are very importantthey
keep your deck from lifting from the upward pull of halyards connected to
your mast collar. They should be bolted to your mast just as you step your
mast before the rigging is tensioned. If you attempt if after the rig is
tensioned, the holes in the tangs and mast may not line up. Same thing with
any halyards, don't have any halyards tensioned pulling up the deck. Since
your mast is keel stepped, you can safely back off all the rigging and try
to line the holes up.

The v-berth SS rod with a turnbuckle is used in a similar way as your mast
tangs.to off set the upward pull of your babystay from where the
babystay connects to the deck. I am of course now assuming you have a
babystay. Same with the mast tangs, no tension on the babystay. Tighten
the v-berth SS rod's turnbuclke until the rod feels tightdo not over
tension it as you will pull the deck down.

Trusting this is helpful.
