Very confused by what i see and not something i have ever worked on. My guess
is that cable is not allowing shifter to fully engage or else transmission is
shot. There is an area of the engine support that appears to be worn away by
the shifter movement  No idea how that could be. Also there is a green
sleeve on the cable near the clamp but not in the clamp. I am wondering if the
cable is clamped so that it cannot rotate forward far enough to engage
completely. Considering loosening clamp and moving cable housing forward but
not sure if that would allow it to fully engage.  What sets the limit of that

Re: Stus-List Fwd: Transmission problem??

2020-08-24 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Suggest you determine if you can shift transmission at the transmission
successfully. If so and it stays in gear w/o issues, replace cable assy.
If not and trans fluid level is normal and ‘clean’, you likely need new trans.
When my trans recently died, it stuck in gear as I was docking, partially
destroying the dock and adding $500 to my slip fee. The on-site mechanic was
able to get it shifting again (without using the cable or disconnecting it).
If it is trans., replace the pressure plate at the same time as you do the
trans.
Good luck,

2020-08-24 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
Losses might be 5 or 10 percent, but I never heard of almost 2/3s!
There is the prop issue and gearing though, that 30 HP is at 3600 RPM. The only
A4s that can do that are in planing boats or have the 2:1 reduction gear.
Absent the gear you are probably at 22-24 HP at best and many A4s came severely
overpropped and can't get past maybe 1400 RPM. This is really nice on a calm
day, you hit hullspeed just off idle, but any headwinds will about stop the
boat.

I love reading the ads on Yachtworld and the engines listed on a couple
had me wondering. A C 40 with a 50 hp Westerbeke and a Landfall 38
with a 40 HP Westerbeke both seemed unusual. Did C swap around various
engines during the model runs or was this a custom order or ???

C 35 MK I - still the original engine model, if not the original engine

The first 40 I was on in 1980 had a VW Pathfinder diesel. I know some had
Westerbeasts and mine had a Yanmar.

I've wondered the same thing.  My 84 Landfall 35 has a Westerbeke 33, which I
suppose is original??

I've got a Westerbeke 33 with a 2 blade folding prop.
I would say I do 7 knots at about 2700 -2800 rpm pretty consistently.

I do about 6 knots at around 2100-2200 RPM and 5 inches manifold in calm water
with a clean bottom. I can push up to maybe 6.5-6.8 at full throttle, but the
large noise increase is not worth it. My A4 is direct drive with a smallish
prop, so adverse wind and seas really knock that speed down. Also towing the
big RIB is a drag - literally.

Peter,

My 1983 LF 35 came with a Yanmar 3HM with a 3 blade fixed prop. It’s happiest
around 2200 RPM at roughly 6 knots. Anything more than that it sounds like the
hull is shaking apart. Not a lot of sound deadening in general with that
diesel, but it gets pretty loud at higher RPMs. Since I replaced the shaft,
cutlass bearing, installed a dripless shaft seal when purchased 4 years ago,
vibration is likely motor mounts which are probably original.

Re: Stus-List Double Hurricanes

2020-08-24 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Hi, Richard and all

Looks like Marco might dissipate somewhat off the coast south of
Louisiana. Laura will maintain its strength and move in a more westerly
direction towards the Louisiana/Texas border. Touche' in Pensacola should
see little from either. The Admiral and I were on the boat Saturday night
but left Sunday morning without doing any storm prep after a critical look
at the model forecasts.

The two storms have been an exercise in model watching. There have been
large differences between models. For detailed info I like looking at:
