Stus-List Hanging a dipole

2016-04-03 Thread Andrew Frame via CnC-List

This isn't for my boat, but it is about marine hardware, sort of...

First, background:

I have to hang a dipole antenna for our emergency management amateur
radio station. We're going to take advantage of some well placed
concrete light poles in the parking lot. The dipole must be able to be
lowered to the ground during severe weather, so a pulley will be mounted
to the top of each of three poles.

Normally, for an easily accessible location, I'd get hardware-store
galvanized pulleys, lag bolt them to the top of the pole, and grease
them once or twice a year.

But, accessibility *is* going to be an issue. I have to get the fire
department's bucket to get to the top of the pole.

So, I pondered using marine stainless hardware and pulleys for the
installation. I'm not sure, so posting this for those who wish to offer
a thought. Feel free to respond direct if you don't want to post to the
group.

Thanks in advance,

A!

yesterday. But they were NOT what I ordered!

And if you want to check out the sails, there are some good pics here

With the pinstriping on the sails the first thing I thought of was a

Stus-List Cruisin' Music

2015-07-10 Thread Andrew Frame via CnC-List

What do you like to listen to while underway?

Our departure out the access canal to the river is to Enterprise Clears
Moorings (yeah, I know, pretty ambitious for a 24...), then it can
range widely, except for whatever headache-inducing noise my daughter
listens to. We tend to steer towards classical or motion picture themes.

What are your two or three favorite compositions, and do they have a
specific point to be used in the voyage, or are they running music?

Stus-List What Model Have I?

2015-06-17 Thread Andrew Frame via CnC-List

On the bigger boats, I see many of you post the length, and a model
name. Some vessels have the same manufacture year and LOA, but come from
different model designs.

Of my 1975 24, I have found only one model, the /Niagara/, but a look at
the layout shows that mine is not a /Niagara/.

I have the original owners manual, and nowhere do I find a model
variant. Nothing on the title, and nothing in a casual web search.

The subject came up when I applied for insurance with Allstate and they
asked for a make and model.

They were happy with CC 24 but it got me wondering what model
variants of the 24' were offered, besides the above-mentioned /Niagara/?

Several years ago I noticed a leak in the cabin roof under the place where
the chain-plate tie rod goes up to meet with the deck fitting u bolt to which
the shrouds are attached. The fibreglass guy sealed the leak. Several weeks ago
I noticed a white deposit (calcium–like) on the tie rod at the top and asked a
rigger to check it out. He says that the tie rods are aluminum and corrode when
moisture gets to them. First they push the deck up (which he says is already
happening) and then they pull the u bolt down; this part needs further
explanation. Repairs estimated from $1,300 to $2,000, doing both port and
starboard sides. I’ve told him I will either repair the rods or sell the boat
with disclosure, but will not ignore the problem.

My dilemma is the usual one, how long do I continue to put money into an
older boat, especially as I’m 75. However I’d rather sell the boat because I
can no longer sail it than because I can no longer afford it! Gives me a lot of
pleasure and keeps me active and motivated.

Anyway, I wonder if anyone has any advice to offer, would appreciate the
feed-back.

Stus-List CC 24 Top o'Mast Work

I'm still doing the new-owner fixing things and the top of the mast is
beckoning. It regularly gets whacked in low trees, so I have no idea
what shape anything is in. The windicator is long gone, and I'm
surprised the VHF whip is still attached.

My mentor suggested the easiest way to do inspection/repair is to loosen
the bow stay and both shrouds, and just lay the mast down aft. We can
then stand on the dock and fiddle about with it.

It seems perfectly reasonable up front. Anyone with 24 experience beg to
differ?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
