Stus-List Insurance for Older Boats

2021-06-22 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
In the course of jumping through hoops imposed by our insurance carrier for
our 1975 C 30 MK1, I had an email from a senior VP with Gallagher
Skipper's Plan that says, in part: "In the today's market it is extremely
difficult to find insurers willing to write sailboats over 40 years old.
These boats have a high incidence of fires, rigging failures, pulled
chainplates, and rudder failures and are considered high risk. Five
insurance companies have stopped offering quotes for sailboats over 30 and
the few that will offer it are very picky." This, of course, is highly
concerning. Any recommendation for a carrier that is more favourably
inclined to cover an older boat would be most appreciated.

Stus-List Yanmar 3GM30F in C 30 MKI

2021-01-19 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
A trusted friend has a Yanmar 3GM30F available (he's going all electric).
I've bonded with our C 30 MKI Atomic 4, but diesel and a little more oomph
into a headwind and big water is appealing. Does anyone have an experience
with swapping the A4 to this model of Yanmar?

Stus-List Anchor Locker Access

2020-06-12 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
(Apologies, premature send on the previous)

At some point in its history, a now-dysfunctional South Pacific VS1000C
windlass was added to our 1975 C 30 MK1. The through-deck access to the
anchor locker is via the windlass, hand-cranked, and its through-deck hole,
just big enough for a 5/16" chain to pass, and not big enough to allow
smooth passage of a typical rode connected to the chain. Even the smallest
of thimble on looped rode causes problems. Can anyone tell me what the
original MK1 top-side access to the anchor locker looked like, if in fact
access was even part of the design? Also, does anyone have experience
rebuilding the VS1000C windlass? Ours sounds like an old starter motor when
the Bendix won't engage.

Stus-List Source for long stainless/brass screws

2020-05-22 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
I'm having difficulty finding a supplier of the 6" screws - preferably
stainless, but will settle for brass - to re-install the interior and
exterior handrails on our C 30 MKI. I'm not sure if they are a no. 10 or
12. Recommendations would be much appreciated, preferably in Canada.

Stus-List Changing seacock values

2019-12-10 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
While she's on the hard, I plan to replace the seacock gate valves with ball
values on our '75 C 30 MK1. Can anyone offer the benefit of experience in
doing so? Are there tricks to stabilizing the through-hull fitting while
unscrewing the old valves? Is it best to replace the entire through-hull
fitting?

With thanks,

David

Stus-List Depth Transducer Installation

2019-04-14 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
I'm installing a new thru-hull depth transducer on our 1975 C 30 Mk1,
which requires cutting a hole for it. Dumb question I'm sure, but is the
hull cored or solid? Any suggestions on where to locate the transducer on
this model?

Stus-List Colour match question

2019-01-06 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
We want to repaint the cove stripe on our 1975 C 30 MK1. Any suggestions
on matching the original colour (e.g. pantone colour spec) and/or what
product(s) to use to re-do it?

Stus-List Propeller Sizing

2018-10-30 Thread David Morris via CnC-List
I determined at haulout this weekend our newly-acquired 1975 C 30 MKI,
Atomic 4, direct drive is equipped with a Gori two-blade folding prop,
measuring approx. 11.5". I have neither the experience or expertise to know
if this is a great prop for the boat, a lousy one, or, more likely,
somewhere in between. After a major tune-up on the engine, we seemed to be
able to run at around 6.2 knots in relatively calm water. Any advice,
suggestions, observations anyone would care to offer on prop selection would
be much appreciated.
