Stus-List Engine strangeness

2023-06-12 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
Previous boat
‘79 Nicholson 303
Yanmar 2qm15
320 hrs.

Starts and runs all day. Slowing while approaching a dock-stalls.
Change filters, check for loose fuel lines, change crush washers…..
Approaching a dock….stall. Always while slowing down.
Approaching the fuel dock at Dodson’s was told “I’m going there!” By the nice
man on his Hinckley. My response, “Sorry,(engine stalls) I am.
The fuel pickup was at the forward end of the cylindrical tank. When I slowed,
all the crud would slosh forward and block the pickup causing a stall.
Unfortunately the yard cleaned the tank and replaced it. they also
inadvertently punctured it and diesel would run out the bottom. Found this out
after a day sailing. Back to the yard and a new tank was installed.
Unfortunately they inadvertently severed the propane line while cutting a 2”
hole in a bulkhead to run a new vent line. It was obscured by the insulation.
Found this out when it blew up. With 2 of us onboard. ‘Nother story. I’m sure I
told it here at some point.

Re: Stus-List Beta Engine Stalling

2020-06-29 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
With previous boat we had a stalling issue when slowing or throttling back.
Yanmar would run all day if need be and as soon as approaching a dock or
mooring, would stall. Spent days trying everything. Filter changes, tightening
hose clamps, changing crush washers turned out to be sludge in the tank.
The pickup tube was in the forward end of the tank and would clog when slowing.
Cleaned the tank, no more problems. Other than the yard that cleaned the tank
did so with gusto and put a hole in the tank. Which needed replacing. Then
there was the explosion that occurred when they inadvertently cut through the
propane line (which was obscured by insulation) While rerouting the tank
vent...but it ran like a top until then.

I have it in a lifeproof case with a Ram Mount holding to the grab bar on the

I also added weatherproof outlets for 12v with usb and cig lighter outlets to
instrument housing on pedestal. I plug iPad in there. I also use a garmin glo
for gps signal.

I Need to recore a 1.5’ x 3’ area of deck.
I’ve started researching.
But I know there is good info here.
Best material, divinycell or balsa?
Anyone know the thickness I’d need?
Best type fiberglass to finish with?
Best way to hide it all? Deck paint and Nonskid?
Thanks in advance.
I’ve watched a bunch of youtube and I have mentally prepared myself to take

Going to do this very thing Monday.
I just greased the Maxprop.
Removed the two set screws and tried to thread in a zerk fitting(grease
nipple). Of course I forgot the prop was Italian and bought sae standard thread
fittings. Got the metric and the rest was easy. Darn prop took almost an entire
tube of grease.
Now onto the rudder post. I should probably do that in metric.

Hideaway has the same situation. It’s an ‘85 model built in ‘84. Your HIN says
it’s an 85 as does ours. I believe the documentation says ‘84 though. When you
sell it’s an ‘85. When you buy it it’s an ‘84.

Re: Stus-List C Northeast Rendezvous Recap

2017-09-11 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
I'll second all that Edd said, and add what a great bunch of people were there.
Lots of insight and lots of laughs. And lots of beverages. The location was
great, with excellent facilities and Aldo's Coffee literally at the edge of
the marina. Hamilton Park Marina will be a destination for me again. Can't wait
for Port Jeff!

So if the numbers for the rendezvous get too low we can make it C's which

Yup. Great boat. Offer, survey, adjust the offer or not, buy, go sail. We love
our boat. Truthfully, the key is a really thorough survey. Decide what you can
live with and are willing to pay for the boat. Whether or not it is a good boat
is easy for all on this forum.
Maybe drive on down to the Northeast Rendezvous and speak to the owners.

One thing to remember about the Garhauer vang is that the attachment to
both the mast and the boom are custom made for the boat (you send them the

attached to the mast and boom wrap significantly around the spars. (On my
25 about half of the boom is cradled in the attached plate. ) So the
fasteners connecting the plate to the spar are under primarily shear
 loading, not tensile.

For this sort of configuration, the additional cross section of the
machine screw (or cap screw, if you use those) would seem the better
choice. If, however, you have something like a Boomkicker, or a vang with
“generic” mounting plates that don’t curve around the spars, rivets might
 be a better choice.

Yes. As I said, license to learn.

"Each of these vessels must keep out of the way of the next vessel. For
example, a sailboat must keep out of the way of a vessel engaged in fishing,
which in turn must keep out of the way of a vessel with restricted
maneuverability. And everyone must keep out of the way of a vessel not under
command."

You were absolutely the stand on vessel.
You also had(have )the responsibility to avoid collision. You also have the
right to yell, "HEY F-CKTARD" BUY A BOOK" as he passes your stern. Just sayin'.

Re: Stus-List Cutlass bearing

2017-05-31 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
If you're pulling the prop shaft it's fairly easy. Hack saw through the brass
liner then bend it in and peel it away from strut. Strut pros work perfectly on
brand new struts and cutlass bearings. Watch the video. Otherwise they are
finicky. But work. They need to be perfectly seated to work smoothly.

Wow. Let's see... How much lighter will my boat be with titanium?
That's amazing that titanium is cheaper. And sexier.
First price I got was crazy high. But then I realized it was Canadian not USD.

Re: Stus-List Cushions smell

2016-02-25 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
I just washed on gentle in a front load washer, 24 covers. With tide. Hung to
dry. Smell great! Wife looked at me a little funny with all the covers hanging
all over the place. Front load dryers spin faster than top load so drying time
was short.

Replacements are probably what's coming. We were offered aluminum or stainless.
Stainless being a "cheaper" option.

Stus-List 35-3 chainplate removal

2016-02-24 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
Looking for any experiences with repairing/replacing a chainplate or 2 on a 35-3
I'm showing a hairline crack about 3/4" on the weld that attaches the flange to
the chainplate at deck level.
Replace them both?
Remove, grind, reweld and replace?
Is it fairly straight forward job of removing the nuts and bolts from
chainplate at the bulkhead below, remove the 4 screws on the flange on deck and
lift?
Hopefully only butyl tape and not 5200 between deck and flange.
Safe to leave the mast standing tied off while chainplate out?
All input and opinions welcome.

Re: Stus-List Fwd: Replacing Windows - welcome

2015-11-10 Thread JP Mail via CnC-List
Me too. She's an '84 35mk3. Though not perfect, appears to be very well cared
for and well outfitted. Has new port lights, recent rod rigging, fuel tank and
rebuild of 3gm. Interesting thing about window refit is a ss frame around them.
Haven't seen that in my research before. Things I need peace of mind with is
hull integrity and hull/deck joint. There is also a bead of silicone along toe
rail. This raises an eyebrow. I know a 30 year old boat will have issues but
there are issues I can deal with and others I don't have the time or energy to
deal with. I've done the soda blast and hull surface restore before and can do
it again, but I don't want to face recoring. After a year search I'm settled on
a C though. Hence joining the list. I think the 35 mk 3 hits all the buttons
for me.
Jon.
