pictures below like the one on the left of the picture. 

The deck fills have a 3-3/4 inch flange with a 1-1/2 inch hose pipe. We need 3

Transport:

I had a great experience with Andrews Trucking. They coordinated between the 
broker and both marinas. I received a video of the loading, texts where they 
were, and greeted by a really friendly driver when they arrived. Don't know if 
they do this for everybody, but it gave a great peace of mind as I couldn't be 
there. Ask for Glen Stewart.

Stus-List Furling Main

I removed the lazy jacks my boat came with and find dropping the main quickly 
puts the sail on the leeward deck providing a quick conversion to power with no 
windage issues to deal with and good visibility for the helmsman.  Flaking the 
sail is easy working from the topping lift end of the boom. Yes I have a boom 
topping lift. I have never had a problem with the sail blowing over the side 
provided we are into the wind or in the relative calm of the harbor entrance.  
I like simplicity. Fewer things to tangle, get jammed, or wear out.

 Only the Lazy Jacks don't require changes to your main sail. Both stack pack 
 and the Dutchman system might require a completely new main (or major 
 modifications to it) or a new sail cover.
 
 
 
 You can buy the Harken set or what I would suggest, assemble your own kit. 
 This is not an overly complicated task. Fortunately, Harken and many others 
 publish pretty good pictures and diagrams which you can use.
 
 
 
 A few points that you might find useful:
 
 - If you make your own set, be prepared that the amount of line required for 
 the lazy jacks is way more than you would ever imagine. If I remember 
 correctly I needed over 70 ft for a single Y system (two lines going to the 
 boom). I eventually switched to three lines to the boom and it was around 100 
 ft. Keep in mind that it is usually much easier to cut the line than to make 
 it longer (;-).
 
 
 
 - If it works for you, consider attaching the top end of the lazy jacks to 
 the spreaders (10-15 cm/4-6 from the mast). This would make raising the sail 
 much easier as the slot between the lines would be wider.
 
 
 
 - Many would say that using stainless steel rings, instead of little blocks 
 is fine. My experience showed that the SS rings almost cut through the line 
 (chafe) in one season. YMMV.
 
 
 
 - And lastly, if the cost of the Harken set seems prohibitive, but you are 
 not feeling like assembling the set yourself, you should be able to find 
 something in a local chandlery or on-line. For comparison, e.g. Sailboat 
 Owners sells the Harken kit for around $360, but Catalina Direct sells a 
 similar set (not brand name) for about $210. The fact that it is Catalina 
 Direct does not mean that the set would not be useful, because there is 
 nothing specific about the lazy jacks; it is just a few pieces of hardware, a 
 piece of line and a few blocks. A kit like that has an advantage, because it 
 comes with all screws, bolts, drill bits, taps, Tef-gel and instructions. 
 Guessing from how you asked you question, you might not have too much 
 experience with boat work, so a kit like that might be an easier way to 
 tackle the job.

I bought a Baltic 39, Finnish built, 3 years ago having spent 5 years shopping 
for a swan as an upgrade from my 35-1.

It is a great sailing boat and immensely strong. I cut and machined the teak 
during a deck replacement last winter so I have been through every inch of the 
boat and have an intimate knowledge of its construction and noted lack of any 
deterioration. 

Rob ball designed a very sweet sailing vessel. My wife and I sail her without 
auto pilot and find she is easier to work and tracks better than the 35-1. 

It is a pain to go below, 6 steps, but when you take a wave that washes over 
the deck and partially fills the cockpit the wisdom of the bridge deck is self 
evident. 

We are doing a full refit for a North Atlantic crossing when I retire in 3-4 
years. I have no doubt about the boat, just me. 

She looks and sails like the best of the CC line, just stronger for offshore 
work.  We love having the CC star molded into her, she is a great extension of 
that stellar mark. Thank you Rob Ball.

 knock-off (I think they bought a boat and made a mold from the hull) and 
 I was pretty sure it was a CC 40 knock-off but the owner assured me it 
 was 'just like a Swan only cheaper' and so I left him to his beer.

 designed by CC and has the CC cove stripe with the familiar 
 diamond/star. They were built to a pretty high standard, complete with

Stus-List Lake Superior Storm

Yes, full agreement on the ferocity of the great lakes.  I sailed the Chicago 
to Michigan City race in June of 1980 on an Erickson 39 as the navigator and 
for the stormy return the foredeck man.  I still have the clipping from the 
Chicago Tribune stating 19 foot waves.  I believe 3 boats were lost to swamping 
on the return from Michigan City to Chicago.   Out of 9 crew, there were 3 of 
us standing for the return, the skipper, his girlfriend, and me.  The 
girlfriend, though a stalwart lass, was later forced to retired with a broken 
nose.  The other 6 were below making a mess.  The biggest problem was 
hypothermia due to the North wind and the very cold water.  I had hands that 
turned into claws making it very difficult to get the storm jib hanked on and 
sheets tied to the clew.  We never raised the jib because the skipper was 
content to do 9 knots with a triple reefed main.  The trip over had been a 
downwind drifter with temperatures in the high 80's, the usual drunken party, 
and a ver
 y fresh breeze and hung over crew for the start of the race.  A front came 
through and everything went to hell in probably an hour after the start.  All 
in all a fun ride that taught me a good lesson about sobriety on the water.  I 
was 26 and too full of energy.

Unless your hood is different than mine, all it does is keep rain and waves 
from getting in between the slider and forward part of the companionway, and 
protect and hide the tracks and slider. I think you want it open all along the 
bottom, or the water won't be able to drain properly.
I think what you are asking is simply how to tighten up the screw holes?
If so, what I did on mine was to ream out the holes a little with my handy 
Dremel tool and an eighth inch rasp.
Then I inserted some SS helicoils, I think #10 NC, put a little vaseline on the 
screws, screwed them in the helicoils so I could remove them, and bedded them 
in the holes with thickened West System epoxy. Worked like a charm.

A couple of the screws are loose on my companionway hood, so I am planning on 
removing it and giving it a good cleaning (and cleaning the gunk underneath it).

What type of sealant should i put into the screwholes when I put it back on?
4200? Silicon?  Any advice would be appreciated.

There seemed to be quite the debate a few years ago about whether to seal the 
entire underside or not.  Mine only appears to have sealant around the screws 
and i don't have any leaks (at least not around the companionway!) , so I'll 
probably stick with that method.

 We used to race against a ? ton special painted black called 007. 
 Boat-for-boat we were as close to dead-even as could be but we owed them 
 time. If memory serves we rated 126 and they were 130-140 something. I found 
 out Rust-Oleum (yes those guys) make marine paint at something like ?-1/4 the 
 price of the ?marine? brands that apparently works well when brushed on. I am 
 going to try it on a cockpit hatch and see how it goes. You did luck out with 
 the A4 ? there are always deals on parts for those for determined scroungers 
 and many of the diesels of that era have NO parts at all available anymore.

 I?m sure you are right about the estimate but I have some wiggle room before 
 I get to the value of the boat. The PO was planning on salvaging the rig and 
 crushing the hull so you can imagine what I might have paid. The boat looked 
 tough but most of the issues (and there are a lot) are cosmetic.  After three 
 weeks we are ready to get her in the water and do some sailing before the 
 season is over. I have spent so far just over $1500 and a LOT of elbow 
 grease. My wife is a very good seamstress and she is willing to do the 
 cushions including adding some back rests. We already have the materials in 
 hand (Sunbrella). I am not using Awlgrip, just some decent deck and epoxy 
 paint. The hull is in good shape and I will not be completely stripping the 
 old paint. It is in good shape, just a little beat up and the wrong color. I 
 am keeping in mind that this is not ever going to be a show boat. Just making 
 it look good and feel good for two to spend a weekend on board. If sails come 
 into !
 the picture that number goes out the door. We will see where it all ends up 
 but I am confident at this point that my efforts on this boat will (for the 
 first time in my life) probably come back to me when I sell her for a bigger 
 boat (the real upgrade). My guess is that I could have at least tripled my 
 purchase price without doing anything but what fun is that?

 You must be *extraordinarily* good at doing work on the cheap. My boat could 
 really use new sails, topside paint, and new cushions. The cost of that 
 exceeds the market value of the boat. I did rewire my boat and that cost a 
 good chunk of your proverbial $4K doing all the work myself. I have been 
 quoted around $10K to paint the boat and over $5K to do interior cushions. I 
 am not trying to be a Richard Cranium ? I love the fact an old CC has found 
 a loving home ? but I don?t see the finances working the way you think. I 
 have seen again and again that once you start taking things apart you find 
 more and more things to work on. Good luck ? I am anxious to hear how you get 
 topsides and interior done so far under the going rate because I need it too.

Stus-List Charging batteries

Why not install a battery combiner switch in place of the normal 3 position 
switch. I seem to recall Nigel calder's book suggested this approach. I put one 
on my 35-1 with great results serving a starting battery and a house bank of 2 
deep cycle batteries.

 I think he meant it's not the *perfect* solution.  The perfect solution 
 would be a separate voltage regulator for the starting battery, which 
 probably would mean a second alternator/charger, which just doesn't make 
 sense on our boats.
 
 I worried for a few years when I watched a fully charged starting 
 battery getting 14-plus volts while the house bank was still in 
 acceptance mode.  However, the fully starting battery wasn't accepting 
 any amps, so it doesn't seem to matter.  I've never had a problem with it.

 Just thought I'd share my current project. 
 
 I'm repairing a boat with a ripped off cabin top winch. The winch was mounted 
 on a pad molded in the deck. Molded in the deck under the pad was an aluminum 
 disc. The winch fasteners were tapped into the disc. The cabin liner was 
 immediately under that. The winch, pad and disc all separated from the deck. 
 
 Since there was no access to the underside of the pad, there was no easy way 
 to get beneath the pad and add structure for strength. The plan was to clean 
 up the pad, re-attach it with epoxy. Simply epoxying the pad down would have 
 very little strength so the winch needs to be through bolted. (Of course a 
 minor gelcoat repair is required to cosmetically finish the pad.) 
 
 Since the backing plate will be visible from the cabin, it needs to be nice. 
 
 Anyway, I ordered a couple of pieces of 1/4 inch aluminum plate on eBay. (You 
 can find cut scraps fairly cheap there.) I used my Bosch jigsaw with a metal 
 cutting blade to size the pad and rough trim the corners. Then I shaped the 
 corners with a belt sander with 80 grit and then finished all the edges with 
 the belt sander and 120 grit. The edges were hand sanded with 320 grit. The 
 exposed flat surface was hand sanded with 1000 grit wet/dry then polished 
 with a buffing wheel and polishing compound. Looks nice!! 
 
 Whole process took about 30-40 minutes. The winch will be re-installed with 
 washers, lock washers and cap nuts for a nice finished look.

 I was thinking the same thing. 
 Hopefully its in good shape. Not expecting I'd want to try and change it out 
 my first time while its in the water! But a quick haul is not that bad.
 
 And I've wondered about the thru hull valves - exercised them all back and 
 forth a few times. They 'seem' OK, and the hoses appear OK as well. 
 I expect the hoses and thru hulls will get replaced over the next few years 
 (hopefully I won't regret waiting!)
