Re: Stus-List Broken Shift Cable C 44

2019-03-06 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
Fred,
I replaced the throttle and shift cables on my C 44 in 2016 after the
shift cable broke.
The Edson information I received with the boat suggested that I needed a 64
series (5/16" ends) gear shift cable and a 33 series throttle cable.(10-32
ends).
I couldn't get Teleflex 64 series stuff so I ordered a Teleflex 3300, 22'
with 10-32 ends and Teleflex 43 series, 23' with 1/4-28 ends.

It turned out that both cables were 33 series with 10-32 end fittings.
Both the 22' and 23' cables worked fine so somethng in that range will work.
I didn't have a problem running the cables under the single fuel tank I
have in the aft cabin. It sounds like your configuration may be different
with 2 fuel tanks but you should be able to slide it alongside the exhaust
hose which keeps the fuel tanks up above the hull.
I ended up using the 43 Series cable assuming that it will be less likely
to fail in the future but had to modify the Edson end fitting in the
pedestal.

Re: Stus-List Navtec Backstay Adjuster

2017-03-25 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
I have used an industrial hydraulic shop to replace the seals on Child's
Play's Navtec hydraulic backstay, Navtec boom vang as well as the Navtec
control panel.
The replacement seals used for the hydraulic fluid seem fine. All are
functioning fine after between 6 and 2 years since the work was done.
The seal on the boom vang that seals the high pressure nitrogen (to hold
the boom up) started to fail after 2 years. (as the hydraulic pressure was
released and the boom rose the nitrogen would leak and made a loud gurgling
noise in the fluid reservoir).
I have had the boom vang serviced at Southshore Yachts (navtecservice shop)
this past winter and hope to have better result this time around

Re: Stus-List C Night Train

2016-11-22 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
My C 44, hull number 18 built in 1985 was another Blair Vedder "Night
Train". It might be the next "Night Train" after the C 43. The build file
has lots of correspondence between Blair and C about a variety of topics.
The most discussion was about Blair's insistence about the dark blue gel
coat and C being unwilling to guarantee the colour of the gel coat.
I have many of the original sails with "Night Train" printed on the bags
including 4 symmetric spinnakers as well as a genoa staysail, spinnaker
staysail, storm jib and trysail.
Does anybody have any old pictures of the C 44 Night Train?

Re: Stus-List C Interior Wood Veneer - mid 80's

2015-09-11 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
Thanks to all for the input.
It looks like I will look for a good match in pattern with with teak veneer.
I was planning to use the oil only to match the color but will use some
kind of varnish on top. The idea of not having to do any interior trim
maintenance for 30 years does appeal to me

Stus-List C Interior Wood Veneer - mid 80's

2015-09-09 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
It is time to refresh the interior of my 1986 44 and I have a section that
I would like to re-veneer. Does anyone know what the wood veneer is on the
mid 80's C's?
Is it teak or some kind of mahogany?
The best match I have found is the Teak Veneer Quartered from Oakwood
Veneers.
http://www.oakwoodveneer.com/veneers/teak-veneer.html
I have tried the Watco Danish Oil Cherry as a color match as a lister
recommended some time ago and it seems to be a pretty good match for my
boat.
Any help from someone who has worked on their wood interior would be
appreciated.

Stus-List Subject: Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?

2015-08-20 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
I installed LED's all around on my boat and had no issues with the running
lights or anchor light.
The 3 color tricolor from Dr. LED was another story. It produced noise on
the VHR radio (antenna is no more than 1 foot from the tricolor) making VHF
unusable with the tricolor on.. I tried a variety of RF chokes on it but it
did not improve so I went back to an incandescent bulb.
The issue was clearly with the 3 color LED bulb as we have no issue with
the LED white anchor bulb which is mounted in the same housing as the
tri-color.

Stus-List Subject: Was Wire Gauge, now Where can I get LED?

2015-08-20 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
The Dr. LED 3 color tricolor bulb had the RF noise problem. I never tried a
white LED in the tricolor and suspect that it would be fine as the white
anchor LED worked fine. At the time I researched my problem with the 3
color light I was not alone with the LED interfering with the VHF. It may
be in the last 5 years that they have solved the noise problem.

Stus-List CC 40 Aft Cabin revisited

2015-08-17 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
OK,
We all know CC's are the prettiest boats on the water. My 44 has been
called the prettiest boat on the lake by many people not including me :)
 or CC owners. :)
I would like to re-ask Don's original questions about the 40 Aft Cabin. I
went with Don to look at this boat hoping to add to the number of great
sailing/great looking boats at our marina. The question is really about the
aft cabin version of the 40, not the traditional layout. I believe the aft
cabin version was only offered in the last year of production.
We have a 44 and one of the best features of the boat is the aft cabin with
a bridge deck high enough that you can walk around the entire back of the
boat and through the head. Because of the bridgedeck we have a very large
dodger that creates a wonderful spot to hang out in bad weather and yet
still allows for sailing the boat properly with good access to line
stoppers and winches. (Obviously our primary focus on this boat is
cruising, albeit quickly). We also have 370W of solar power mounted on the
dodger and no-one even knows it's there.

The 40 aft cabin layout on paper looks like it takes the interior of the
40, adds a separate aft cabin area but with some compromises.

The compromises in my mind are:
-the companionway stairs are 7 ft long and quite steep and the hatch
opening is small, this opening sits at the end of a deep and narrow bridge
deck
-because the bridge deck is very deep and narrow it makes it more difficult
to build a functional dodger. In addition the boom is much lower on the 40
so there really isn't an opportunity to build a dodger tall enough to
comfortably make it through the narrow/deep bridge deck. Has anyone solved
this by moving the gooseneck higher up the mast and raising the boom with
possible modifications to sail shape?
-the engine is no longer under the companionway stairs but pushed way back
under the cockpit sole, mounted backwards and drives a V-drive transmission
like the LF 38. How do owners find the access to maintain the
engine/drive/shaft seal etc?

Any answers to these questions from people with experience with this boat
would be much appreciated.

Stus-List Retrieving reefing lines

2014-11-15 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
I find the fastest way to do this is to use a tape measure that is
sufficiently long and rigid.
Extend it through the boom. Once through use electrical tape to tape the
end of the reefing line to the end of the tape measure and pull it through.
It doesn't take much more than a minute per line. I do this for all three
of our reefing lines.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on CC 44

2014-09-09 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
Thanks for all the input. I will summarize what I have found so far about
engine replacements.
Much to my surprise pricing for new Yanmar engines with similar hp (55 hp)
to the old engine pricing is better in Canada compared to the US.
With boat show pricing I have been quoted $14,900 US (list $18320) for a
4JH5E or 4JH57. Of course with Yanmar products they can't be shipped to
other regions so I would have to pick it up in the US and pay state tax,
followed by Canadian tax when it is brought into Canada. (total about 20%
:( )
Canadian pricing is approx $14900 CAN, roughly 10% less given the exchange
rate and I wouldn't incur the US state tax.

As many recommend Beta as an alternative to Yanmar I started looking at
them as well. The 50 hp option is about $14,000 CAN before any options
(higher output alternator, longer wiring harness etc) and this is before
adding any of the items required to change engine mounts, exhaust etc. I
don't see the significant savings I was expecting based on others
experience. It sounds like maintainability (parts, access) are better than
Yanmar so savings aren't only $.

I am likely going to put in a remanufactured Yanmar 4JH3 which I have been
told should be a drop in fully replacement with the same hp as my
turbocharged older model. It sounds like Schooner Bay have an excellent
reputation delivering fully remanufactured engines for less than half the
price of a new engine.

Thanks for everyones input. I will update the list as my project proceeds.

Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on CC 44

2014-09-08 Thread Jonathan Boocock via CnC-List
The Yanmar 4JH-TE on our CC 44 went bang on the weekend. It was the last
thing on the boat that hadn't been replaced so in some ways it is a relief
to replace it. It is unclear whether we will go new or remanufactured at
this point.
I have been appalled in the past at Canadian pricing on Yanmar parts and I
suspect complete engines would be the same. Nonetheless I will probably get
a quote from a Canadian dealer.
Who in the US would be recommended to get a quote from? We were happy with
Bay Shore Marine on our way through Annapolis, does anyone have experience
buying a complete engine from them?
Is there compatibility with engine mounts , exhaust etc between the various
Yanmar models?
(4JH, 4JH2, 4JH3, 4JH4, 4JH5)
If so this could open up the number of potential replacements.
For remanufactured Schooner Bay Imports (Al Holzer) in WI seems to be
highly recommended.
Our current model is 56 hp but I think anything above 46 hp would be
sufficient so the non turbocharged versions would work fine and of course
the more recent non turbo versions have the same or higher horsepower.
Any guidance on who to contact based on your experience would be
appreciated.
Thanks, Jon
