It’s not that unusual. When I’ve used him I’ve always ultimately be happy with
the the work, but depending on the project, and how the project is going, he
can be very difficult to get a hold of.

How depressing!

I might be able to make it middle of next week. (No Saturday hours this time

I trust you have tried j...@anapolisrigging.com or (410)269-8035?

My friends and fellow sailors,

2 years ago (literally), my boat was impacted when a neighboring boat fell over
on to it. The furling system was damaged and the rigging (Navtec rod rigging)
stressed requiring an inspection. Thus began a saga that is still ongoing.

Initially a Rigger was contracted in Rock Hall to do the inspection, etc. He
disappeared and when finally located we had to threaten legal action to get my
property back (Mast and rigging). That was 2014.

We then had the mast and rigging transferred to Annapolis Rigging for
inspection and repair. It has been reported that they have everything to
complete the repairs and reinstall. Some confusion seems to have occurred as
the boat is out of the water in Worton Creek so Annapolis Rigging needs to go
to the boat, the boat can’t come to them. (for the record, they had to come
over to the Eastern shore to retrieve the mast in the first place).

Here is where the ask is – Is anyone close enough to Annapolis Rigging to stop
in and have them call me. BoatUS and I have been trying since August to reach
them to get the estimate to approve for them to arrange for a crane, etc. to
come and “assemble mast, step mast, block and tune mast, install boom, run
lines, and hook up electric”.

I am located about 7-8 hours from Annapolis and want to avoid taking off work
to get this effort finished.

My 120 volt lights are 5/16 diameter, my 12 v lights are 1/4 inch diameter but
are soldered. Luckily I only need 2 reds, so not too many crimps.

The seller is clearly being dishonest.
Depending on the quality of the work done, it might be a good deal, but saying
that it only has SOME LIGHT WEAR FROM REGULAR SAILING is deliberately
misleading.
Ebay was much better and safer for purchasers, when bidders were allowed to
communicate with each other.
The way they run it now facilitates crooks.

Generally, no (no need to do an upgrade).

Be careful, though, with anything requiring special drivers (GPS receivers
(they are all “special”), any extraordinary WLAN adapters (e.g. some of the
special “extended range” ones), any older (and obsoleted) h/w (e.g. some older
printers, scanners etc.), many security devices (e.g. finger print readers).

Re: Stus-List Diesel issues

2015-07-19 Thread Steve Sharkey via CnC-List
You also might check the air filter. I had a similar problem when my air
filter got clogged from dust from a slipping belt.

cnc-list@cnc-list.com wrote:

On the way to and from our racing area, my Beta-25 with only 390 hours on
it was running fine and then it dies.

It started up right away, ran for a few minutes then died again.

We sailed out of the channel for about 10 minutes, started it up again
with no problems and it ran for 20-30 minutes before
I shut it down for the race.

On the way back we motored around loafing at about 4 knots for 30
minutes as we headed for the channel back to the slip.

Halfway in it died again. I used the electric fuel pump to be sure it
was 'primed' and it started right up and then quit again after about
 30 seconds.

By then, we were close enough to the slip to sail in--kept the main up
for just such an event--which we did without issues (a competent crew
 of 6 can do that!).

Ran it in the slip at full throttle and it died again after about 3
minutes. Started tight up, ran again at full throttle and it died again.

Fuel tank is only 3 hours into a full tank (48 gallons) and the pick-up
tube was replaced last year to go further down into the tank so neither
the fuel level or pick-up tube level can be issues. I also added some
Stan-dyne (?) when I last filled the tank earlier this year.

The Neuse River was almost flat since we had only a 5 knot breeze so I
doubt that it was 'stirred up' crud from the tank.

Haven't replaced the fuel filter between the tank and the engine or the
engine mounted one this season (did it last year) so that is my first chore
since IMHO it looks like a fuel issue or an air in the fuel line issue.

I also will check all the clamps that are used to seal the fuel line
from the tank to the engine.

Does the list have any other suggestions/ideas besides what I listed?

The Crusader has a centerboard that sticks out of the back of the keel when it
is raised.

And while Stars and Stripes did win the Americas Cup, he wasn’t the fastest of
the American Challengers. Heart of America, the Chicago Yacht Club challenge,
got a very late start on development and had a very tight budget and did not do
well in the early rounds of the challenger selection. By the last round, she
was the fastest boat, but did not have the points necessary to become the
challenger. As a matter of fact, Stars and Stripes actually raced for the cup
using the sails that were developed for Heart of America.

Last time I saw Heart of America she was on a mooring in Burnham Harbor in
Chicago. Renamed and converted into a private yacht with engine, interior, and
everything. She ran in several Chicago Mac races, but had such a handicap that
we used to joke that she started after the rest of the fleet was half way to
Mackinac. Pretty boat though.

I’d kill for one of the Heart of America Challenge posters that showed the
boat, bow on, sailing into waves of grain across a wheat field.

What an interesting boat for $25K USD.and a lot of boat which, from the
pictures provided, looks like one of that vintage, well maintained.

Interesting keel.we don't see many of them called a 'proboscis
keel'...I wonder if Dennis Conner saw it and used the concept for his 1987 run
for the America's Cup in Freemantle, Aus. His keel on Stars Stripes was a
'proboscis keel' and he kept it a secret until after he won back his trophy.
He experimented in Hawaii for 2 years with his 'proboscis keel' design before
the AC races.he felt the sea conditions in both places were similaras
usual, he was right.

I have a Garmin 741 with touchscreen and WiFi and am very happy with it.
The touch screen works well and is pretty intuitive - especially if you've
used Garmin before. Using the WiFi with an iPAD is great. I can either use
the Garmin Bluechart navigation program using the boat's GPS location or can
use the iPAD as a remote station using Garmin Helm. This let's me see and
control exactly what the unit at the helm has and lets me lay in a new
course for the helmsman or, if the autopilot is on, the change the autopilot

very good functionality and easy to use once you learn the quirks.

I also have a Raymarine autopilot w/display on the network. Marginal at

I should think a CC 34 CB known to be tender, could still be handled in most

battery. The system works very well and has also made managing the
batteries much easier.

Time to re wire your boat to have an isolated starting battery and a house
battery. That will eliminate most of your charging/starting/low voltage
problems.

Re: Stus-List VHF trouble

Joel,

I have an SWR meter if you want to test the wire and antenna performance.
You could also see how the radio performance is using the emergency VHF
antenna that you probably have as part of the race equipment. My emergency
antenna is very easy to hook up if you want to try it.

Thanks Dennis. Impromptu does like light air and we worked hard to keep
the boat moving consistently. Fortunately it also does pretty well in
heavy air. The return home had much heavier weather and we were able to
keep the boat moving upwind in over 30 knots through a rough Gulfstream
passage with a storm trysail and heavily reefed jib. Back at the dock at
6:20 this morning and happy to be home! Hope that you guys also had a good

Re: Stus-List getting seasick

2014-06-23 Thread Steve Sharkey via CnC-List
I’ve had very good luck with Stugeron. I took it once during an ocean race
where I was below for an extended period doing a bunch of clean up in rough
conditions and was feeling better pretty quickly I’ve also seen it work with
people that are prone to seasickness. I have not had a problem with drowsiness.

I'm somewhat prone to seasickness. I found through personal experience when I
was much younger the following three precautions that I try my best to follow:
1. Get enough sleep the night before boating. Being sleepy is similar to
dizziness (at least for me) and sleepiness can make seasickness (unless it is
caused by Bonine) more likely (unless you can just sleep)
2. Don't be hung-over. Same as sleepiness but with nausea added. Starting out
like that is a bad move.
3. Eat a decent breakfast. Low blood sugar and/or a stomach full of junk (candy
bars, Fritos, donuts) can cause dizziness and nausea which the gentle motion of
the sea will push squarely into the red zone.

I've tried ginger in various forms and am not quite convinced of its
effectiveness.

Never heard of Stugeron but am now interested in trying it. I see online that
the active ingredient is an antihistamine: Cinnarzine. How is the drowsiness
compared to that of Bonine (meclizine)?

I see that the brain has a vomit center. The trick is to prevent signals
originating in the inner ear from reaching the VC. Apparently antihistamines
are able to do this. And, it seems, they always make you more or less sleepy.

Steve’s keel/centerboard arrangement was perfect for this light air race; he
was able to smoke almost everyone through the Chesapeake, and he even caught up
with many of the Class 1 and 2 boats. Kinda depressing that it took us almost
three days to get out of the Bay…

Also, we were one of several boats (mostly Class 1) that paid for and attending
a weather briefing by Jennifer Clark. The Office was the only boat in the
briefing that following the weather routing. We actually did make up some time
once we were out of the Chesapeake, but by then, it was a bit late.

Re: Stus-List Sealed-Up Centerboard and PHRF Credit

2014-06-02 Thread Steve Sharkey via CnC-List
There is a noticeable improvement in upwind pointing and speed with the
centerboard down and having a boat that only draws 4.5' with the centerboard
up vs. 6.5 for the fixed keel version opens up a lot of cruising in a Bay
that is very shallow.

I've had the pendent break on my old CC 35 and on my CC 37, but both time
were because of lack of maintenance. I replace it at least every 5 years

Edd,

I can smile and relate to your cb challenges...

2 years ago when we moved Perception to the yard for winter storage I had 2
friends help.. 1 a power boater the other a sailor, asked the sailor to
release the starboard jib halyard - clearly marked And guess which
stopper he pulled .. Yup the centreboard ... And the cable snapped.

We were able to hauler her and put her in her cradle for the winter. Pulled
the cable out and it was badly corroded ... Just a few strands intact so
over due for replacement. Arranged to have south shore yachts do the
replacement - and when ghey removed the pin and remaining cable the pin was
70% or more worn thru, the thimble was also well worn ...

Good thing it happened in a calm harbour And the admiral was not on
board.

The new fittings look much more substantial and should out last my sailing
days!

Paul. :)

There will be fellow CC ers on the boat both ways!

Our class includes Steve Sharkey's CC 37 as well as a mini transat 21 footer
and a 100 foot schooner. Should make the starting line interesting. You can
track us at www.bermudaoceanrace.com. They are using Spots, not Yellowbrick.

Finally, as a follow up to an earlier post, I ran out of time to make a fancy
enclosure for the frig compressor. Some corrugated plastic board from Home
Depot and duct tape will suffice for now. If nothing else, it will serve as a
template for a more permanent solution.

My even bigger problem (after working hard getting the top plate off as
noted, PB Blaster, square-shafted screwdriver in a crescent wrench aided
by a vise-grip on the head of the screw at the same time - takes only
three

hands) was getting the cable free from the retaining pin. We ended up
drilling a new hole in the side of the vertical casting to press the pin
out, after removing the hair-diameter cotter with small needle nose. I'll
consider this newly-drilled hole a nice feature the mfg. forgot to
include,

until someone knows of a better way to get these apart... And by the way
the freed parts make a nice ting sound when they fall down the tube into
your after bilge recommend a dishpan or something be placed underneath

put on the new.

The biggest problem is getting the pedestal apart to get to the lever end
- I had to use heat and solvent (PB Blaster or WD40) and an impact
screwdriver to get the flat plate off the top of the casting which holds
the lever.

Don't scrimp on the length, if you are uncertain, buy the next longer
cable, it can always run a bit loose in the lazerette area. I don't
remember the lengthy, and was replacing the throttle cable which may be a
different length.
