Folks I have tried and tried to find the problem. The IT group that maintains
our list program assure me it is not the problems. The program only relays what
is sent to it and makes no changes.

I tried contacting several email servers whose customers were experiencing
problems, and I might as well talk to the wind.

The problems are very sporadic and are not consistent by any means. I have
several email accounts all with different providers and do not any problems.
So I cannot relate to the problems.

I am still using Windows Live Mail from Windows Essentials (no longer
available) and Thunderbird Mail. Both programs access all of my email accounts
and neither has shown any problems.

I don't know what to suggest at this time except for you to experiment and try
a different email app on your smartphone, laptop or desktop computers.

I keep trying to find the problem and the solution but right now things do not
look good.

Right! So, I went to order a cutting board, Stu. I got this back when I went to
pay w/ PayPal:

"Thank you for your order.
Once we have received confirmation of your payment,
your order will be shipped.
Your order total is $ 43
Link to PayPal Cannot query the database.
You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your
MariaDB server version for the right syntax to use near 'est La Vie', '',
'43.00', 'PayPal', '', '')' at line 1"

I don't know if you are familiar with databases and servers but it appears that
your order system handles data inserts in comma-delimited form from the website
with the data fields defined by bracketed apostrophes. The point being is that
my boat name, "C'est La Vie", is messing up the ability of the database or
software to import the order due to the apostrophe in C'est mis-parsing the
data fields. If I leave out the apostrophe on the order, it should process just
fine. The question is, will you be able to remember to include it on the
cutting board? CAN you include it on the cutting board? - Steve Staten

That's true, Bill. It's a big lake. It fills up with power boats and jet skis
in the summer though. There are many yachts there and even a fueling station
for floatplanes. It's where the oil money in Tulsa goes to play.

Ironically, I live 1.5 hours' drive south of there on the shore of Lake
Tenkiller but there's not much point in moving it here. Tenkiller is a drowned,
narrow river valley where to sail it, you would have to tack all the time and
try hard not to sail too close to the high bluffs where the wind is blocked.
It gets crowded in the summer as well.

2020-04-01 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
There is a perspective that I have yet to see anyone express: even if this
CV-19 mostly kills elderly folks with existing pre-conditions, it is still hard
on the younger set when they get it. That still includes doctors, nurses,
dentists and ambulance drivers. If they’re sick, who will handle the non-covid
afflictions (i.e. heart attacks, strokes, the car wreck victims and the kids
with broken bones)? Broken dentures anyone?

One of my daughters had something really bad in the early part of March. She
said that her lungs spasmed and felt like they were on fire. She’s 34. How old
is your doctor or dentist? She tested negative for flu and strep so the
hospital sent her home. The CV-19 tests were in short supply and she was still
ambulatory. She had to teach her four year-old how to make formula for her
eight month-old. She’s feels 100% recovered NOW but it was a scary week for us
all.

We just can’t break our healthcare system (it’s half-broken already). Besides,
the cost of treatment could bankrupt you. Aren’t we supposed to leave our money
to our kids instead?

My boat, C'Est La Vie, is in a slip on a marina that is in a drowned ravine on

threw high winds and waves down the length of it. Many of us had our dock lines
frayed to pieces in the tossing about. A boat just down from me was de-masted

I'm lucky. Only my dock lines were damaged. Now, I have an excuse to replace

I have a 26’. The pump works but I have found that a long manual pump placed in
the bilge itself with the outflow hose pointed into a nearby 5-gallon bucket
was less (pumping) work and quicker. Having said that, hauling a five-gallon
bucket (repeatedly) up the steps in order to dump it into the cockpit provides
some serious weight lifting exercise. Plus, there is the imperative to not to
slosh any of the brown water with dead wasps onto the galley area while
ascending the ladder with the bucket.

Accordingly, choose your preferred form of exercise: outside repetitive arm
movement or inside lower-back weight lifting.

Stus-List Cockpit Grating Question

2016-11-01 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
Good Morning, Everyone. I’m not a sailor but I own a boat and impersonate a
sailor on rare occasions. I have a problem with my wooden cockpit grating. If
it has a nautical name, I’m unaware. A few of the runners that keep the grating
up and out of the water have come loose. They were glued on so I used Elmer’s
Wood Glue to re-glue them, thinking that would be the end of the matter. After
a half-hour of actual use, I was a wiser, sadder man. Is there a better glue
that you can recommend? I would surely appreciate it.

Re: Stus-List Prop Shaft coupling

2016-09-20 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
Five years ago, on one of my first solo sails on C’est La Vie, I allowed a jib
sheet to get overboard as I was motoring into the drowned ravine that is the
marina, here on the reservoir. I was focused on maintaining course. The ravine
is maybe 30 meters narrow, lined with expensive boats. The sheet and propeller
became enamored of each other and in taking the relationship to the next level
(the way snakes do), they managed to pull the propeller shaft free from the
coupling and the Westerbeke’s transmission. The coupling is a large rubber
donut about one inch thick and maybe eight inches in diameter. It was all
chewed up BUT the shaft bearing was not leaking. The boat glided to a complete
stop about 20 meters from the beginning of the dock.

I had not yet learned to scull so I dropped anchor and swam to shore with my
phone and wallet in a ziplock bag on top of one of those square floating seat
cushions pushed gently ahead of me. It was a Sunday evening with no one around
and the sun going down behind the trees. The next day, I returned to assess the
damage. The temperature was in the mid-nineties (F) and the boat was a
fiberglass sweat lodge. The largest washers available managed to keep enough of
the torn parts of the coupler together in one piece to allow me to restart the
engine and ease into my slip. I was not yet a lister here and had NO idea how
to replace the coupler.

In despair, I searched local roadsides for blown tires by the side of the road
(with polyester cords, of course). I finally found a good candidate and
fashioned a replacement coupler from the tread by dulling many box cutters. The
bolt holes needed a rat tail file to enlarge the drilled holes. The tire tread
has performed just fine since then.

Re: Stus-List Stupid Reefing Mistake

2016-06-14 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
OK, confession time: I was out on my second solo sail on my new-to-me C 26
and there were whitecaps on the lake. I knew almost nothing about sailing and I
was there to learn. Our marina is in a drowned ravine with steep cliffs so
there's little wind until you clear the mouth. So, I'm putt-putting along with
my smoky, one-cylinder Westerbeke, headed to the mouth of the ravine with full
sails up and a guy yells from shore:

"Hey! You better reef that main before you go out there!"
"Reef That Main", I thought, "How quaint. How very nautical. I MUST look that
up when I get home." I remember waving at him and smiling. Mind you, I wasn't a
kid. I was 55 and just learning something new.

So, I come out of the ravine on a broad reach and BAM! Instant sideways. Things
are crashing below, the water is deep over the rail and pouring into the
cockpit. I'm hanging on for dear life. In addition, there are cliffs to the
leeward not far from the mouth of the ravine. Somehow, I headed it into the
wind and ran forward to yank down the jib. It immediately blew into the water.
Once done with the jib, the boat was swinging away again so I headed back and
yanked down the main.

It must have looked bad as I could see the boat of the guy who yelled at me
getting underway in the ravine. Fortunately, I regained control of the boat
before he reached the mouth. By running back and forth between the tiller and
the main, I was able to get that sail reefed without knowing the name for it.
With relief, I saw my would-be rescuer turn around and return to their slip.

Nowadays, I'll reef on a dare. Just for the practice.

Re: Stus-List 1983 38 Landfall on Ebay

2015-08-21 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
It is almost impossible to leave negative feedback about any eBay purchase no
matter how egregious the transaction. You simply won’t be allowed do it. Many
frustrated buyers simply “plea-bargain” for Neutral so they can “move on”.

I bought a How-To manual for a computer game once and only the package that it
was packed in arrived. The manila envelope had been reused from a previous
purchase and resealed with what appeared to be pancake syrup (or KY). The
seller begged me, “in the name of Our Lord Jesus”, not to give him/her neutral
feedback. BAH!

Having said all that, I actually bought my CC 27 on eBay and love it. Now, if
I can only stop the rain from leaking under the toe rails. The Westerbeke had
to have a crack welded too. Oh, and the balsa has to be replaced where the roof
was cracked; cosmetic stuff, really.

The great thing about the Internet is that scammers like this can run but they
can't hide. You can find a lot about someone if you know how to look and they
don't cover their tracks perfectly.

In this case the weak point is his phone number, which is basically a unique
search key.

Tracing that it appears that he's a sailboat flipper of sorts. I found a
previous ad with *identical* text in places (the ALL CAPS stuff about please be
an informed bidder, 24 hours deposit required, etc).

He listed this Morgan Out Island 36 earlier this year, in Florida:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/INCREDIBLY-SPACIOUS-GLOBAL-CRUISER-by-famous-yacht-maker-No-Reserve-Aft-Cabin-/201335429823

Someone on cruisersforum noticed it, but there was no commentary on it (last
post here):
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/ebay-sailboat-scam-143861-2.html

Also a Cal 34 in Virginia which sold for $6.3k:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAPWORTH-JENSEN-WORLD-CRUISER-For-Pennies-on-The-Dollar-NO-RESERVE-Xlnt-4-Couple-/201314971076

He has a neutral ebay review from a year+ ago which said:
caveat emptor. Boat was not ready to put in the water and sail
for a listing of SERIOUS BLUE WATER OCEAN CRUISER No Res - New York City
(#200361465706) which sold for $1425.

Oh and he flips motor boats too:
http://www.boats4sale.pro/detail/us/OHnFCCdmndHnCeFCPHd/Rare-Opportunity-to-Own-a-20K-to-30K-SPORTS-CRUISER-w

The Morgan OI listing has surprisingly extensive dialogue from him. So at least
he's a good writer and seller of the cruising dream.

Lots of gems in here which make me laugh:

Every boat is a project boat. However, some boats are more project than boat.

Buying a boat like this Out Island is for someone who wants to get to know
their vessel like a cowboy knows his horse and saddle and six gun or like a
surgeon knows the tools and machines in the surgery room.

We adopt stray boats. We already have our own cruising sailboat and we don't
need another for ourselves, but from experience and in our early cruising days
before we were spending half our year directly in boat yards and marinas and
exotic ports, we know how hard it is to find truly worth blue-water cruisers
that can be purchased on a normal middle-class income. We are relatively young
folks ourselves, and part of our passion is helping other young couples and
families and middle class retired folks afford the cruising life-style.

To purchase a boat where every single thing is already as it should be, would
be a dis-service to the active sailor because it prevents you from getting to
know how everything on your boat is set up and how it works.

I don't know if the Morgan OI sale was a scam, in the way that the LF38 listing
is clearly a scam (since the salvage is not disclosed). It appears he actually
knows his stuff, or at least enough to quote much of Nigel Calder and
cruisersforum. But there's certainly a lot of spin and marketing in there!

Re: Stus-List Off topic Windows 10

2015-08-07 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
I have a Google story:

My younger brother worked in shipyards all over the world. He fell at the one
in Korea that is on an island off the eastern coast and ruptured his spleen. He
came back to the US to recover and, instead, died in a motel in Texas. I was
named administrator of his estate. Because his first ex-wife looted his motel
room and storage unit, I had no idea of his friends, co-workers, professional
contacts or the many girlfriends and children that he claimed to have scattered
over the globe.

I only knew of one bank account (the local one). I needed info on all his
financial resources so I could get them to my brother’s two legitimate children
by his second ex-wife. The only possible source that might provide some answers
was his GMail account. So, I contacted Google for access to it and they
demanded all sorts of documents as you would expect; death certificates, court
documents, my ID, etc. After “jumping through all their hoops”, they denied my
request and said that I could not appeal it. Their rationale was simply, “We
value our customer’s privacy.” This is the value of human beings in a
post-capitalist corporate economy. I hope all of Google’s management die
anonymously as my brother did to the people that knew him.

Share or document your passwords so the folks who have to clean up after you
can do just that. Above all, get a will.

2015-07-31 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
No, I just looked at the eBay ad. I live quite far from there.

You are right about the possibility of next-of-kin being left with a mess to
clean up. It wouldn’t surprise me to someday see a Gutenberg bible offered on
eBay in ‘Pet Supplies’ with the bid starting at $1. I am just now wrapping up
my mother’s and brother’s estates. It had real moments of drudgery. My
ex-sister-in-law thoughtfully looted my brother’s storage unit and tossed his
valuable LP record collection in the dumpster.

Perhaps this boat wouldn’t fit in a dumpster…

Steve, you looked at the boat in person, or you looked at the ad? I would hope
you'd give us more info if you looked at the boat!

I paid $4400 for my CC 27 on eBay in 2011. It had a couple of soft roof spots
and the toe rails, handrails and genoa tracks all leak(ed) but I didn’t know it
at the time. It’s still a great boat. Down here in Flyover Country, fancy
things sometimes sell cheap when the seller is in a hurry. As our economies
circle the drain, there will be more such separation of the hobbyists from the
hard-core sailors.

Re: Stus-List CC 29 for sale in Portsmouth, VA

2014-11-14 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
I only paid $4,400 for my 1976 CC 26 three years ago. The interior is good.
Cushions are clean. The electrical system works. The water jacket on the Vire
engine needed welding. The seller was motivated and put it on eBay. However,
the many cracks in the cabin roof causes leaks that are only now being
repaired. The toe rail leaks in places too.

I don't know anything about that boat, but they are killing us with that low
price!

Is anyone on the list familiar with a 1983 CC 29, called Arias,
that is in the Portsmouth/Norfolk/Hampton area?

I have a friend who is looking for a boat, as you may recall, and
I've pretty much sold her on buying a CC between 29 and 35 feet.
Arias is listed on Craigslist right now, and my friend is taken with
what she can see in the photos. I've been asked to find out more
about the boat and arrange a trip to look at her.

I figured someone in the CC fraternity might be able to give me a
little bit of history about the boat.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 4JH-TE Repower on CC 44

2014-09-08 Thread Steve Staten via CnC-List
I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I was sailing alone and a
sheet from the jib got overboard as I was motoring back to my slip. A loud
noise ensued and I came to a slow stop with the engine running. The sheet had
rolled up the propeller shaft to the hull and in continuing, pulled the shaft
free from the rubber coupler that connects the propeller shaft to the
transmission. I wouldn't have thought that a single-cylinder Westerbeke gas
engine could have been so powerful as to rip up an nine inch diameter, one inch
thick rubber coupler without stopping. Not having access to a replacement, I
eventually had to construct one out of a polyester-threaded tire tread.
Creating the bolt holes was a challenge. It has worked just fine these past
three years and I always mind the sheets now.

Similar problem over weekend. Engine alarm and then shut off. Apaprently
engine restarted ok but no more fwsd or reverse. Then the line that had fallen
over the side was noticed with one end attached to boat and other wrapped
firmly around shaft. Shaft seems pulled back approx. one inch. Transmission
seems to be spinning but not shaft. Hope to find out today if simple fix or a
time consuming expensive one. Was a lot of pressure on boat end of line so
worried also about shaft and strut. Hauling boat to repair. 3GM30

Jon,

This might sound to easy, but could you have wrapped something around the prop
shaft?

I had a similar sounding experience when a piece of heavy line wrapped around
the shaft. Had to clear it with a dive knife (took about 2 hours, working with
a flashlight) then restarted the engine and all was fine. I was bringing the
boat up from Florida, and it happened in southern N.C., so I ran it for many
hours after without any issues.

The Yanmar 4JH-TE on our CC 44 went bang on the weekend. It was the last thing
on the boat that hadn't been replaced so in some ways it is a relief to replace
it. It is unclear whether we will go new or remanufactured at this point.
I have been appalled in the past at Canadian pricing on Yanmar parts and I
suspect complete engines would be the same. Nonetheless I will probably get a
quote from a Canadian dealer.
Who in the US would be recommended to get a quote from? We were happy with Bay
Shore Marine on our way through Annapolis, does anyone have experience buying a
complete engine from them?
Is there compatibility with engine mounts , exhaust etc between the various
Yanmar models?
(4JH, 4JH2, 4JH3, 4JH4, 4JH5)
If so this could open up the number of potential replacements.
For remanufactured Schooner Bay Imports (Al Holzer) in WI seems to be highly
recommended.
Our current model is 56 hp but I think anything above 46 hp would be sufficient
so the non turbocharged versions would work fine and of course the more recent
non turbo versions have the same or higher horsepower.
Any guidance on who to contact based on your experience would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jon
