Re: Stus-List Air Conditioning Question
I am in NC and never let it run when I am not on boat. Of course, I am a little paranoid about having shore power doing anything on board in my absence including battery charging. I am 1 hour away from my boat in a club owned marina with no Dockmaster. With my 16000 btu unit blowing thru head to main cabin, it takes ~ 30 minutes to make it reasonable cool below. A stuck float switch led to continued high amp charging years ago which literally ‘smoked’ my charger (I found the charred component in my charger and replaced) and it’s failure likely prevented a fire. Water Phantom may sink at the dock ( bilge pump not powered) but unless hit by lightening or catching fire from a neighbor’s boat, she will not burn (again) on my watch. Bruce, Thanks. That seems to be the growing consensus. Some at my club leave theirs running set to 82 or thereabouts. You’re welcome to come on down anytime for a sail on the Enterprise. The same is true for pretty much anyone else on the list. Even Risch. All the best, Edd ———- Edd M. Re: Stus-List Air Conditioning Question
I don't have a built-in AC but my Florida C&C 36 was horribly damaged as a result of humidity neglect when I bought it. Part of the solution when I am not south is a small dehumidifier which drains into the galley sink. My neighbour sets it down on the cabin sole and secures it, among other things, when there is a hurricane coming. There is a minimum 15 dollar charge for electricity at the marina and between the 30-pint high-efficiency dehumidifier and the battery charger for the bilge pump the boat has yet to exceed that minimum. Your mileage may vary. Re: Stus-List Air Conditioning Question
You learn something new every day on this list. Hadn’t heard of the moisture /dehumidify mode. <> So, sounds like Jack is saying this moisture mode. Sounds like to me, if the thermostat were to cool off and it was still humid, and maybe warm areas of the boat, it would force it to keep cooling? Most people at our club just set it to 78, or whatever and leave it go, as electricity is not metered at the boat. It seems to me that the moisture mode would work better for you down there. I had a very large computer room compressor years ago that I could set the humidity level on, so I set it at 45%. Worked great, until I saw my bill triple. Turns out, the second compressor kicked on, prompting the electric heaters to kick on, and gave me a rude awakening. Bill Coleman. Re: Stus-List Air Conditioning Question
I suggest turning it off. In order for it to run you'll need water flow. Too many boats regularly sink as a result of a failed hose or failed through-hull. Imagine the discharge hose off of the AC coming loose and spilling the water into the boat instead of overboard. Besides that, fires are caused predominantly by wiring failures. Large loads such as the AC are more likely to cause high heat connections and potential fires. Besides when you run it more, you just wear it out. In the Chesapeake Bay we are likely to suck up a jelly fish at least once a day. This is sure to trip the AC anyway. Solar fans will do wonders for keeping the air turned over.
