My boat came with port and starboard lockers. The propane tank, pressure
gauge and regulator are in the port locker. The starboard locker is also
hinged with a thru hull, but it isn't completely sealed.

Our 29-2 came with the port locker lid glued down. I cut the hardened
mastic with a hacksaw blade, cut a hole in the top of the space, cleaned up
the lid and added a piano hinge, and used the space for hanging bags of
empty cans, etc. There was a capped through-hull down below which had never
been used. Our current boat has the starboard locker lid glued down, and so
far I haven't been motivated to repeat the process, which is long and
convoluted. The 35 does not have a factory through-hull below the locker,
and neither boat had a proper propane locker in place under the glued lid.

I had a closer look today using a mirror on a stick through the port in the
back of the quarter berth and it appears that it was designed to be a locker
but a hole was never cut in the top of the port side corner seat. The
"lid" seems to be glued onto the top of the seat with Sikaflex or similar
that will have to be cut through with a long blade. I was able to insert a
kitchen knife between the lid and the top of the locker, but the 40 year old
Sikaflex has hardened. Maybe when it warms up a bit more it will soften and
I will be able to cut it.

Shawn,

My 1974 C 35 Mk2 still has the original three burner pressure alcohol
stove with oven, which is very tired and needs replacement.  I believe a
previous owner of Callisto had the boat modified for Propane, since
propane stoves are not listed as an option on 1974 C 35 price list - I
may be wrong though.  Do you have any photos of your lockers and could
you describe the plumbing for the propane stove with make and model of
the stove? Any info would be helpful when I haul out the old stove/oven.

the owner just cut the top off and added hinges. It seems to work
fine, and looks ok, but I think water intrusion may be an issue. With
mine, the entire cover is removable (teak, but now epoxied and painted
white), and there is an inner lip which prevents water from running
in, similar to the main cockpit lockers.

I haven't seen the 34 lockers, but it shouldn't be too difficult to
cut one in, depending on your experience with fiberglass work. You
will need some kind of sealed tub to fit the propane tank of course.

My guess is that the second locker locker was an option. You paid for the
labor and parts to install the lid and its drain. You might be able to

Dennis,

That is interesting - on my 1981 C 34 there is a second propane locker on the
port side - I keep a spare propane tank in it. It has a drain to outside the
hull above water line same as on starboard. Assuming you have the through hull
on the outside on port, I would guess that a previous owner glued/painted the
lid down and you just need to pry it open. The hinges are symmetric about the
helm seat on my boat.

Hope that helps,

When I was boat shopping a few years back here on Lake Ontario, 34’s were
fairly common and could easily be had for less than C$20k. More needy examples
quite a bit less, especially if a broker is not involved. I doubt the price
has changed much.

As a follow up, I just learned that a friend of mine is going to sell his same
vintage 36. Nearly the same as the 34, but a little more boat.

Re: Stus-List 1981 C 34

2019-08-23 Thread Nathan Post via CnC-List
Steve,

I have a 1981 C CB version which we bought in June 2018. It is a fun boat
which sails really well and is comfortable for coastal cruising.

Prices vary a lot with condition and what it comes with and where you are
located. Mine was pretty bare bones with old main and jib (had a sail loft fix
them only to have new rips a few months later), broken water heater, broken
propane system, head hoses needed to be replaced, missing parts and had been
sitting on the hard for 2 years so the cushions we mildewed etc. the hull is
solid with no soft spots although there are some problem areas in the deck that
I want to fix at some point. Westerbeker 20B2 diesel engine had a bad fuel
pump relay which was a $30 part, but it was not running when we bought the boat
because of that.

We paid $7500 US for the boat. Not sure if that was a good deal in the end or
not. We put ~11k in so far (not counting marina costs, haul and storage fees)
and lots of sweat equity in getting most systems working over the last year,
including new WH, water pump, battery shore charger, rebuilt prop, dripless
shaft seal, new foam in the cushions, new cruising sails, some new running
rigging, fenders, dock lines, buying safety equipment, a rigid vang, etc. etc.
So we have an $18k boat at this point which is mostly in working order although
there are always things that need fixing and enhancements that would be nice. I
didn’t realize how much a dodger would cost (~5k) and we don’t have one so if
your boat comes with one in decent shape that is worth a bit. Same goes for a
working autopilot and self-tailing winches.

Old boats always can always use more boat bucks so plan on that. It might be
better to buy a boat where the previous owner did a bunch of the upgrades - on
the other hand I get new stuff the way I want it. In any case, if the sails are
crispy and all systems are working and it is reasonably well equipped and clean
then something in the $16-$24k US range might be reasonable I think. Lots of
recent upgrades, good sail selection, and very clean, then maybe even a bit
more. If not, then it should be significantly less I think but you will put
most of that money in regardless.

Hope that helps. Not sure how the market compares further north. Get a survey
done and if it looks good get it and have fun sailing!

In 2012 or thereabouts, I listed my 1978 C 34 (with numerous expensive
upgrades and relatively new rags) for $35K (US) Absolutely no interest at
that price point. I later came down to $25K, and the boat eventually sold
for $22.5K. The buyer got a great boat at a great price. If I were buying
one today, I think $20K US is fair.

I live in Nova Scotia and have the opportunity to purchase a C 34.
Assuming that the boat is in good condition with no major structural issues,
what would be a reasonable price range?
The pictures show a clean boat which looks like it’s been well maintained.
It does have the Yanmar diesel and the current owner says the sails are in
good shape.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Dennis:

If you will open the port tank locker, you will notice that the hinge is
not visible on the outside. My 1981 C 34 has a storage locker on the port
side of the helm. The locker also contains a wash down spray nozzle and is
vented to the atmosphere. Try prying the lid open.

I have the same boat and on mine, the locker has a hinge and I use it for extra
lines/dock lines.

Re: Stus-List 1981 C 34 second propane locker?

2018-05-24 Thread Ron Ricci via CnC-List
Dennis,

If you are looking for backup propane storage, let me offer a suggestion. I
only can carry one tank and have a 5 kg fiberglass tank. Theoretically, you
can see the level in the tank but have to remember to check it. There is
room in my propane locker for three 1 pound camp stove cylinders. I bought
an adaptor
(https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YSY20/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage
?ie=UTF8
<https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YSY20/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage
?ie=UTF8=1> =1) so a cylinder can be connected in place of the tank.
For me this is especially good since my propane grille and outboard use the
1 pound cylinder.
