Stus-List Engine Troubles Injector Rebuild

2015-06-22 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Here's another option: Instead of paying 125.00 per for rebuild why not
buy brand new ones for 132.00 bucks each?

See here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yanmar-1GM-2GM-3GM-Injector-NEW-Part-728170-53100-FREE-SHIPPING-/151718415253

Mine were sticking / cold start was smoky and sometimes laborious. I have
shopped for / seen them for less in the past.

I can postpone that purchase now.. With a steady diet of Power Kleen and
regular once a week use (or more) thanks for Wed nite racing. It's pretty
much cured: It cold starts in 2-3 secs with the throttle on idle. (It
used to refuse to start on anything less than full throttle / several
minutes of cranking)

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles Injector Rebuild

2015-06-22 Thread PME via CnC-List

I found that some Yanmar parts are readily available at Tractor Supply stores.
For example, using the Yanmar part number (724770-53100) in the Hoye Tractor
search field I found the following 3QM30 injectors cross listed to IA-4770 for
$118. See http://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/search/IA-4770.htm
http://www.hoyetractor.com/PROD/search/IA-4770.htm

I saved over $600 buying 3 new injector pre-combustion chambers. Mastry Yanmar
wanted nearly $300 per cylinder, I got them for about $60 per cylinder at Hoye.

I did not buy new injectors, I brought my injector pump and injectors to a
Diesel shop. They rebuilt the pump for about $200, and tested the injectors(no
charge). The injectors were fine. The place I went to was called Shiver
Diesel Injection just outside of Tallahassee, and since we have a diesel
injection shop out at no-where-ville, I’m guessing there’s a similar place near
you.

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles Injector Rebuild

2015-06-22 Thread Nauset Beach via CnC-List
Mike,

I also have a 3GM30F and at the time [2010] the work on the head gasket and
injectors was done the engine was ~ 25 yo, 12 of which I had been the owner.
Was getting quite a bit soot on the transom, cold starts were becoming
increasingly difficult and the idle was rough. As I had never done any major
work on the engine and since the head was pulled and sent to a machine shop to
be reconditioned, the mechanic recommended having the injectors sent out to a
shop to be rebuilt, rightly concluding the “spray pattern” was not optimal. It
took about a week + but part of that time was due to the injector shop owner
had recently passed away and his widow was doing the work, without all the
“certified training.” The injectors had to be redone. The mechanic also
adjusted the valves so everything was back in spec.

Pulling just the injectors did not appear to be an overly complicated process.
The injector rebuild itself included replacing the nozzles and was US$125 for
each injector. The total hours billed included a few other repairs /
replacements so would estimate the labor for the injectors themselves were ~ 3
hours all in. Add in a few other minor parts like copper washers.

When I had my gasket replaced on my Yanmar a few years ago [was getting oil in
the coolant] the mechanic also highly recommended it would be a good time to
have the injectors checked / rebuilt, and have a compression check on each of
the cylinders – one was near the minimum and the others were fine. It all made
a big difference in how the engine performed, the exhaust was much less sooty
and the transom actually stayed clean for a while.

Gary and all,

Thanks for all the advice. I was only wondering about the replacement cost if
it turned out to be more.

A week ago, she ran fine. Yesterday, I couldn’t get it to turn over. Plenty of
cranking from the starter, but no “fire”.

We checked and cleaned the air filter, the fuel filters and did a check of all
the hoses. Then I checked the oil, which was a gray instead of black. Some
research today led me to believe that it’s the head gasket.

I’ll get it to the yard and have a pro look at it.

I just don’t want to miss too many weeks of sailing/racing. Gr.

  Edd,

Have the head check closely for cracks. Sometimes the gasket fails owing to
issues with th e head/block surfaces.

I spent one summer season nursing my old Yanmar powered CC 36 around
the PNW with a cracked head. I would use the compression release to get
it started when cold. Changed the oil every few weeks.

We did re-power after that cruising season with a newer model Yanmar . I
second the comment regarding the extra costs incurred when switching engine
models. A key for me with the 36's older model Yanmar was the future
 availability of spare parts.

I replaced the head gasket on the Yanmar 2GM in our 29. Apart from the
usual lack of access, it was no big deal. I took the head off and had it
cleaned and faced at a good shop, and putting it all back together went
mostly smoothly. One fuel injector line just would not go back in the right
place, had to call in a pro to fix that part.

Your M-35 is a marinized Kubota tractor engine. You might contact a
tractor mechanic about rebuilding it. Seems to me a rebuild should be in
the $3000-3500 range. A new one would be north of $7-8K.

I handled a complete rebuild on an M-30 a while back. I got most of the
parts from a Kubota tractor dealer. Somewhere there is a cross reference
for parts using the serial number off the block.

I took the head and block and the bearings, rings, etc. to a regular
engine machine shop. They built the block, rebuilt the head and installed
the head. All I had to do was install the heat exchanger and a few other
goodies and drop it back in the boat. That M-30 is still going strong.

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2015-06-21 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Edd,

The M35B installed in Imzadi in 2000 failed in 2009. Long story. Cheap previous
owner who cut one too many corners on the installation.

After looking at cost and installation labor for a number of alternatives
(Yanmar 3?M30, Beta 35, etc.) I ended up getting a 2010 bobtail M35B (no
transmission and no instrument panel). With the cost of a proper exhaust riser
and shipping, I think the total came to about $6300. Which was not much more
than the total for parts and labor to get the old engine rebuilt plus correct
the cheap PO’s poor installation.

I had to wait 3 or 4 weeks for shipping because the new tier of emissions
changes were being rolled out at the time I placed the order and there was a
slight lag in getting the bobtail engine built. But I got the impression that
complete engines were in production for dealer inventory at the time, so I
think the delay was probably not typical.

While the engine was out, I stripped the old one to harvest spares for the new
engine (injectors, pumps, starter, alternator, wiring harness, heat exchanger,
etc.) and did a proper exhaust routing and installed a new fuel tank. After the
new engine arrived it took about 4 days to install the transmission, install
and connect the engine (and replace the Vernalift muffler I had just installed
(another long story. Anyone need a muffler, contact me offline – I have 3 to
sell), and align the shaft. I’d guess the labor to RR the engine, swap the
transmission, and connect the new engine was about $600-700 of the total I paid
to get the whole job done ($1800).

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2015-06-21 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Edd;

The 30 and 35 HP Beta 4 cylinder engines are based on the same Kubota diesel
engine as the M35B, so the engine swap would be a relatively easy change
out. Different transmission, so maybe a new prop needed, and a different
wiring harness adds a bit of complexity but not much.

I actually like several things about the Beta better than the M35B, and it
was my second choice when I did the new engine for Imzadi in 2010. If I
recall, a total engine package using the 35HP Beta was $300-400 less than a
complete 36HP M35B from Universal. But using the bobtail M35B as I did saved
a grand or more, and left me with a pot full of spares for the new engine to
boot.

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2015-06-21 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Edd,

Your M-35 is a marinized Kubota tractor engine. You might contact a
tractor mechanic about rebuilding it. Seems to me a rebuild should be in
the $3000-3500 range. A new one would be north of $7-8K.

I handled a complete rebuild on an M-30 a while back. I got most of the
parts from a Kubota tractor dealer. Somewhere there is a cross reference
for parts using the serial number off the block.

I took the head and block and the bearings, rings, etc. to a regular engine
machine shop. They built the block, rebuilt the head and installed the
head. All I had to do was install the heat exchanger and a few other
goodies and drop it back in the boat. That M-30 is still going strong.

Have the head check closely for cracks. Sometimes the gasket fails owing to
issues with th e head/block surfaces.

I spent one summer season nursing my old Yanmar powered CC 36 around the PNW
with a cracked head. I would use the compression release to get it started
when cold. Changed the oil every few weeks.

We did re-power after that cruising season with a newer model Yanmar. I second
the comment regarding the extra costs incurred when switching engine models. A
key for me with the 36's older model Yanmar was the future availability of
spare parts.

If it is a head gasket, why are you thinking of a complete replacement? I had a
crack in the head of my Yanmar and removed the head and replaced it with a new
one. One (+) boat buck instead of a bunch (did my own work).

Or, is the rest of the engine pooped as well?

Sorry to hear this - what problems are you having?

If you can get by for the season a rebuild is certainly cheaper albeit more
time consuming. As to new, it depends on what can be reused but you're in the
15-20k range. Good news is it can be done quickly (days, not weeks) with the
right yard. At that point you may want to consider other components - fuel
tank, alternator, smart charger, etc.

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2015-06-21 Thread Nauset Beach via CnC-List
Edd,

When I had my gasket replaced on my Yanmar a few years ago [was getting oil in
the coolant] the mechanic also highly recommended it would be a good time to
have the injectors checked / rebuilt, and have a compression check on each of
the cylinders – one was near the minimum and the others were fine. It all made
a big difference in how the engine performed, the exhaust was much less sooty
and the transom actually stayed clean for a while.

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2015-06-21 Thread Tim Goodyear via CnC-List
Edd, I'm in the middle of this currently. A new 30hp Yanmar will be around
$12k, so I went with a rebuilt engine from Schooner Bay Imported Motors. I
don't have the engine in hand yet and it's taking 6 weeks not the agreed 3 to
deliver, so I can't vouch for them. As a direct replacement for the existing
engine there is little work to do on engine beds / exhaust / shaft length /
wiring etc, so that will save a fair amount of yard work, but the galley had to
come apart to facilitate access. That engine is ~$5k with core swap.

Good luck!

Stus-List Engine Troubles

2013-08-01 Thread Edd Schillay
Listers,

Just wanted to share my experience last night trying to get the boat
out to a Wednesday Night race.

Lesson learned: Sometimes engine troubles can be the simplest of
things. Feel like such an idiot, but oh well.

My Kubota has a solenoid that shuts fuel off and on with the switch. Things
keep getting better and better.

I don't think it would require a Starship Scientist to install one, altho I
suppose you probably have one . . .

(I hope this doesn't ruin the plot of your short story)

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2013-08-01 Thread Neil Gallagher

Must have been the night for dumb engine moves...(sorry Edd)...

Also going out for Wed night racing, crew lets go of the mooring and
about 5 sec later the engine just stops dead. Same 10-15 kt breeze,
we're about 100 yards upwind of the rock breakwater, and have moored
boats about 100 ft away, one of which we're aiming right for. Only
option was to unfurl the jib, and just managed to avoid collision. After
we get clear of all the boat and the breakwater, and the heart rate
drops a little, I looked for what was wrongI always close the fuel
line valve (A4 engine) when leaving the boat, except for the last time.
Last night without thinking I just turned the handle, not realizing I
had just closed it... felt like 2 cents after it was all over.

Moral of the story: always have the sails ready...or an anchor. And
it's amazing how fast a dicey situation can develop...

Re: Stus-List Engine Troubles

2013-08-01 Thread Wally Bryant
I had a friend who suffered major damage when a non-sailor guest snagged
it with a foot, pulling it out and bending it down so it wouldn't go
back. The guest didn't say anything, out of ignorance or
embarrassment. Then they missed a tack in a close quarters, and the
captain tried to start the engine just to get away from a pier, ending
up broadside to the pier and held there by the breeze. Bad day. If
it's too much trouble to move, it's a good idea to remove the knob or
put the smallest one possible on.
