Stus-List Headliner hardware

2020-10-04 Thread Dean McNeill
Another project on my new-to-me C is fixing the headliner. It’s actually in
really good shape except there’s a number of the white plastic connectors
(screws?) missing. No idea where to find these online or even what to call
them? Any help folks?

Those are widely available at big box building supply stores as well as
Amazon. Search for "white plastic nylon 1 inch hole plugs".

I looked for them as well. I needed 1 in the head. There are a few place that
carry something that looks like it would work..

If you look under the cabinets around the nav station you'll see a few of

But they had not only the even sizes such as 1 inch, three-quarter but also 1 1/16th, and things like that that fit conduit size holes. Dennis,

I have one on my 1974 35-2, and it is exactly what Rus guesses. Mounted on the
flat on deck is a horizontal block that leads a line aft to the coach roof just
forward of the cockpit. I have one on each side of the boat. One I use for a
spin halyard, the other for the main sheet. On Cat's Paw, the headliner is cut
and covered, just as Rus suggests, which hides the backing plate and nuts.

 Hi Dennis,

 I have one.
The flat surface is the same elevation as the
handrail landing(s). On deck there is a
corresponding round spot with no non-skid. It
looks like the option was to mount a spring
supported turning block there to lead a control
line aft. I believe it would have been cut
cover'd for nut backing plate access.

I have no idea which optional control line it was
intended for and I have forgotten who I lent my
book Sail Power to, so I'm missing that bit of
70s reference. I know, it sucks!

On my 35-1 there is a molded protrusion in the headliner at the port forward
corner of the midships hatch. It's about 3 inches square. There is nothing
 on the deck above it.

I've always wondered what it was for. Any ideas?

Re: Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-28 Thread Joel Aronson
Just to follow up - I brought home one of the old panels. I was able to
peel off the vinyl with some plywood attached. I tried using acetone to
remove the remaining wood with some success. I then soaked the vinyl in
hot water in the kitchen sink (don't try this if your spouse/SO is home).
That loosened the glue enough that I was able to scrape off the rest of
the wood with a putty knife. I then used Goo Gone to remove the excess
glue. I have 1/8 inch luan plywood on order. I bought 3M 90 spray
adhesive for vinyl. With any luck I'll have the first panel done and ready
for install this weekend.

My boat now has its own Facebook page. www.facebook/Theoffice35. I'll
post pictures when I get it back together.

Alex,

Go sailing already! :). The access panels are vinyl over plywood (matches
the rest of the headliner) and the long ones are screwed, the smaller ones
use velcro.

I'm going to try removing the vinyl and reusing it over either plastic or
new wood to maintain the original look. When that fails, I'll go to Plan
B. 3M makes a spray, Super 77, that works great! I used it for a cockpit
cushion and pedestal cover.

between some fasteners or I might check a sheet of Formica as someone on the

I hate to be the caboose on this conversation but I do not understand what is
happening to the headliners on the boats, I've never had a headliner fall or
come apart, can someone explain what is happening and possibly the cause?
thanks.

Velcro might not be the answer, but I'm almost positive this will:

It's like super industrial strength velcro.

It's not cheap but it is reusable. I've not used it for headliners but it
secures my Velocitek Speed Puck to the mast (about 1 lb) with a small piece
about 1 1/2 x 4. This stuff bites! We take it all over the world when we

Re: Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-14 Thread Joel Aronson
Richard,

In the case of my boat, it is not the headliner, but the access panels that
are the problem. They are vinyl over plywood. The long ones are screwed
in, the more rectangular ones under the winches have velcro. Over the
years there have been leaks that have caused the plywood to fail in the
panels over the quarter-berth and nav station. Also, the vinyl is becoming
unglued in places. Its not terribly noticeable until you remove a panel
and have pieces of plywood falling out. If your boat is watertight, you
probably don't have this issue. The PO of my boat was too tolerant of
leaks, and I am cleaning up his mess.

Hope this clarifies the matter.

Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-14 Thread Kim Brown

FWIW -the discussion got me to check. I had thought the access panels on my
35-3 were standard laminate but they appear to be fiberglass panels that are
very thin - texture and finish on the front but some definite random strands
and resin on the unfinished back. That said, they are very much like
standard formica/plastic laminate. I would suspect it would make a good
substitute excepting that it is probably more brittle than most of the other
suggestions so pre-drilling would matter-if you weren't going the straight
Velcro route. But it is moisture proof, stiff enough, light enough and
available in almost any color. You may also be able to source scraps from
your local cabinet shop- The cabinet shop I worked with always had a big
scrap selection useful for small projects but not for the countertops they
built. May be easier than sourcing a 4x8 sheet of something.

Several of the panels have delaminated. 1/4 inch plywood would be too
thick. Is there a better replacement? Has anyone either re-used the vinyl
or found a replacement? What glue would you use?
 Thanks!

Hi Joel
I replaced mine with 1/8 marine plywood, epoxy coated and then painted
with Tremclad hammered finish spray in navajo white - blends in perfectly.

As Jake mentioned, and you may agree, the velcro does have some issues -
mine are pretty good but don't stay tight so I may add a couple of
strategic screws and caps.

Joel,

I plan on replacing some of mine. I am thinking about using plastic
sheeting. I stripped of the peeling vinyl a long time ago and just painted
the wood. It is only 1/8” thick. ¼” plywood would be hard to keep up
there using the stock Velcro. I might screw my next set on, as the Velcro
just doesn’t seem to work well, especially in rough conditions.

Re: Stus-List Headliner access panels

2012-11-13 Thread Ron Casciato
I'd be careful of Starboard...it's heavy for that application even
in 1/8 thickness and I don't actually know if it's available thin or in the
length dimensions you'd need.

The original wood panels used to be called door skins and are likely the
cover panels of hollow core doorsoften in luan mahogany plywood.
Those are still available. The vinyl covering can be purchased from
Sailrite??? The sewing machine and sail repair materials company.

I recommend using the small screw cap setsavailable at Home
Desperate or Lowe's. The cap snaps on over the screw head and snaps to the
washer..easy to install and remove. I used about 3 per panel down
the middle and they become invisible in a very short time.

Best,

Velcro might not be the answer, but I'm
almost positive this will:

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3M-Industrial/Adhesives/Promotions-New-Products/Reclosable-Fasteners/

It's like super industrial strength velcro.

It's not cheap but it is reusable. I've not
used it for headliners but it secures my
Velocitek Speed Puck to the mast (about 1
lb) with a small piece about 1 1/2 x 4.
This stuff bites! We take it all over the
world when we sail and it's conquered big
winds and big seas.

Joel,

Not sure what your access panels look like. I replaced the headliner access
panels on my 35-1 with some white plastic sheets from mcmaster.com. The sheets
were smooth on one side, textured on the other. I think I used 1/8 inch thick.

Mine have vinyl that matches the headliner over plywood. The side
panels have screws with covers. Center ones are Velcro. I'll check
McMaster.
