+1 on the "in-hull" transducer. It works like a charm. No speed, though.

Consider an "in hull" transducer. No hole needed. Mount anyplace with solid
hull. I have 2 on my 1980 34. Work fine.

I believe mine were located slightly to starboard due to easy access, not
because there’s anything special about one side or the other.

Ditto on the Green. The further you get from centerline and keel, the more
distorted your readings are likely to be.

Contrary to what Bill said, mine is located just forward of the solid glass.
When I replaced my speed and depth transducers several years ago, I used the
same location. Water from the balsa core literally ran down my arm when I
removed the old transducers and pushed on the soaking wet balsa core. We dried
out the entire area and created solid epoxy “plugs” larger than the old holes
for redrilling the new transducer holes. This was not a difficult job, but
then again I have a “stick boat.”

Hi all,
Sorry about ressurecting this topic. I only had time to go to the boat this
past weekend. Bill, the boat is a C 25

Here is an "annotated" drawing from Sailboat data that I will use for my
questions:
https://imgur.com/a/3Ar35Pb<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimgur.com%2Fa%2F3Ar35Pb=05%7C01%7C%7C394072c9ff8d4836bd7308db240abf15%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C638143400817543407%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C=MYuNEcWC8N0P0cjeoX%2BtSp801rjHgZeUfzD0ErUocKc%3D=0>

To me, there are three options (some easier than others) to cut the hull (2
inches round) and add the transducer:

Red marker: At the moment, the original (I think?) depth sounder is located in
the red marker *inside* the hull.

Yellow marker: There is a small access port to the fibreglass on the yellow
marker that *could* fit the depth/speed transducer. It feels very high on the
hull and a bit fragile as the fitting would stick out of the access port and be
a bit exposed (second picture of the link)

Green marker: Last option, cut a square access *hatch* on the plastic liner
wall (orange mark) that separates the "inside" of the boat from the fiberglass
hull and then cut a hole on the green mark.

Any mindhive thoughts? I am very nervous about making a hole in the wrong place
:)

Thanks!

I use the paddlewheel knotmeter to see trends in speed (faster or slower) as we
adjust sails. It’s more sensitive than GPS for that.

FWIW, Our boat has a speed sensor on centerline just in front of the keel.
The depth sensor is next to it and I had to replace both when one went bad.
Had to cut larger holes through the hull to fit the newer style sensor sleeves,
so I can share some stories. The "speed through the water" sensor is great for
racing but when cruising, I simply use my cell phone, and Navionics and GPS
speed. Bought a $15 clamp for the pedestal guard to hold the phone at the
pedestal and love it. I keep the plug in the hull thru-hull 90% of the time,
and only switch to the paddle wheel sensor, before racing. Found I don't miss
the paddle wheel sensor readout. I monitor GPS instead.

I have a 35-1 and did like Richard (your green option) for the
knotlog transducer. I wanted it forward in undisturbed flow.

It's mounted under the V-berth step. Note the white circular inspection
port under the shoes in this pic:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GJOYJbxEJFjpl1pbNTzDubTESYywKFbM/view?usp=share_link

It's fairly easy to access through the inspection port. Also in there is
the thruhull and valve for my air conditioner.

Hi all,
Sorry about ressurecting this topic. I only had time to go to the boat this
past weekend. Bill, the boat is a C 25

Here is an "annotated" drawing from Sailboat data that I will use for my
questions:
https://imgur.com/a/3Ar35Pb<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fimgur.com%2Fa%2F3Ar35Pb=05%7C01%7C%7Cee39ef60feef44bff28008db23fd65f8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C638143343471454896%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C=zSj2sx2APohprTbV6hxssI3oXG0YYZbe8%2Fa1Pkjm5FI%3D=0>

:)

Thanks!

I believe mine were located slightly to starboard due to easy access, not
because there’s anything special about one side or the other.

Ditto on the Green. The further you get from centerline and keel, the more
distorted your readings are likely to be.

Thanks, Richard! I guess it is time to start cutting. I like the idea of a
prefab frame; hopefully I can find one locally.
@Wolford, the 25 has an in-hull transducer that doesn't work anymore; the depth
readings were also displayed inside on the forward bulkhead for whatever
reason At least there is not core on the hull =]

The depth sounder on my 42 Custom is approximately where your green marker is,
which is what I believe Bill referred to. As Bill noted, mine is to starboard.
Contrary to what Bill said, mine is located just forward of the solid glass.
When I replaced my speed and depth transducers several years ago, I used the

Hi all,
Sorry about ressurecting this topic. I only had time to go to the boat this
past weekend. Bill, the boat is a C 25

Here is an "annotated" drawing from Sailboat data that I will use for my
questions: https://imgur.com/a/3Ar35Pb

:)

Thanks!

Juliano; I had a 25, and I did exactly what you outline as the "green marker"

door there, (bought a prefab one from Defender Marine, but they are available
in most any marine supplier now days) and installed the depth, (and speed)
gauges in the hull; access was easy and we gained more storage space...:

Subject: Stus-List Re: C 25 depth sounder location

Hi all,
Sorry about ressurecting this topic. I only had time to go to the boat this
past weekend. Bill, the boat is a C 25

Here is an "annotated" drawing from Sailboat data that I will use for my
questions: https://imgur.com/a/3Ar35Pb

To me, there are three options (some easier than others) to cut the hull (2
inches round) and add the transducer:

Red marker: At the moment, the original (I think?) depth sounder is located in
the red marker *inside* the hull.

Yellow marker: There is a small access port to the fibreglass on the yellow
marker that *could* fit the depth/speed transducer. It feels very high on the
hull and a bit fragile as the fitting would stick out of the access port and be
a bit exposed (second picture of the link)

Green marker: Last option, cut a square access *hatch* on the plastic liner
wall (orange mark)that separates the "inside" of the boat from the fiberglass
hull and then cut a hole on the green mark.

Any mindhive thoughts? I am very nervous about making a hole in the wrong place
:)

Thanks!

Im having a bit of a hard time finding where to place the transducer (airmar
depth, speed, temp). Manual says ahead of the keel but access on the 25 Mk II
seems limited.

Anyone around here has any tips?

Not sure which model you are referring to, but most often they are just
ahead of the keel, but off to one side several inches, usually SB, I think
. There should be a section adjacent to the centerline where it is solid
Glass before it goes up onto the balsa.
