Stus-List Re: Navigation app for iPad with ios 9
We run iNavX v.5.2 on an old iPad v. MC980LL/A, iOS v. 9.3.5 Our ipad has no internal GPS, so we have a Dual external GPS (about 2" square, 1/2" thick) that talks to the iPad on bluetooth. The GPS picks up 11 or more satellites and looks through the cabin top successfully. We charge both devices from a dedicated 2-slot USB charger off the house batteries. System works like a charm. Our iPad is too old to upgrade iOS, and the latest version of iNavX won't run on iOS versions earlier than 10, but maybe the developer would sell you v5. https://inavx.com/ iNavX uses free NOAA raster navigational charts (RNC), the traditional look, but not the new electronic navigational chart (ENC) charts. Don't know what happens when NOAA shuts RNC down in January 2025. Stus-List Re: Navigation app for iPad with ios 9
Danny; I had an old IPad, model MC985LL/A, that had Garmin Blue Chart software on it and which I used for navigation when moving boats. I’m partial to the Garmin software. The old IPad stopped updating at IOS 9.3.6. And Garmin Blue Chart has been discontinued in favor of the Active Captain app. (Blue Chart Mobile still works, BTW, but the charts are out of date and can’t be updated.) I use the old IPad mostly as an e reader and to check my bank balance, IRA, and the weather and NHC. I picked up a used cellular capable (though I don’t use the cellular connection) IPad Air, MD791LL/A, in a local pawn shop for $125. It started out with IOS 9.something, but just recently upgraded to 12.5.4. I run the Active Captain App on it, and the IPad stores a version of the current charts on my Garmin chart plotter. It is the backup (well, plus a couple of old battery powered handheld GPSs in the ditch bag) on my boat and my go to Nav software on the boats I deliver. I had considered Aquamaps as an alternative nav app, but decided using new charts I’d already bought was preferable to using two different software programs. I'm in the boat now and left it at home so I can't check. I will look further into when I get back. Taking my boat back to home port, in mattapoisett, after nearly 2 years on the hard in Barrington, RI She looks stunning! I still have an old iPad with an old version of iNavx installed on it. It stopped being updated awhile ago ( after version 5.2 in 2018) and last year the Navionics chart subscription stopped working... CHS and Noaa charts still seemed to work but I decided to upgrade the hardware this past winter.
