Stus-List Re: Replacing cabin windows

2023-02-11 Thread Mike Nicholls via CnC-List
I replaced my port-lights on my Cand C 35 Mark III that I acquired in the
fall of 2019. In July of 2021, I replaced the crazed and leaking port-lights
that were held with plexus and bolts. They no longer leak and are held in
place only with ¾ inch 3M VHB tape and Dowsil 795 (no bolts). Some gelcoat
will get damaged and will need to be replaced. I also needed to fill in the
80 or so bolt holes using reinforced polyester resin. Removal of the Plexus
is best done using a Fein multi-tool. Sanding of the gelcoat is also easier
with this tool. The best article to help me was on the S/V Violet Blog---How
To: Replace Frameless Acrylic Windows on a Boat. The Scheafer Article is
also useful as was Boat Works Today. When you place the acrylic ensure that
a lot of pressure is used to adapt the acrylic to the tape. This is very
important. At first apply considerable pressure using your body weight. But
first try in the sheet and use washers to support the acrylic and also to
get the proper spacing for the Dowsil 795. Placing the acrylic requires 2
people. Use masking tape with markers to also help lining up the acrylic. I
put pressure on the acrylic overnight using a number of 20 Kg weights (for
weight training) hung off the hand rails. Make sure the fore and aft ends
are especially weighted down. I sealed around with Dowsil the next day. It
is best to do this in warmer weather to get the best bond to the VHB tape.
This is a time consuming project but is well worth it. All the best.

Stus-List Re: Replacing cabin windows

2023-02-10 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List

My 32 has two windows on each side, and one, the long one has a
significant curvature which puzzled me as to how I would keep it in
place without a frame, screws, bolts etc.  Job done 10 years ago and the
windows today have no issues.

First, I removed the old windows using a stiff putty knife which I filed
the edge very sharp and tapped on the inside of the window slowly and
carefully with a rubber hammer to cut the old Plexus. I cleaned the
Plexus from the old windows as they were used as a template to cut the 4
new windows.

Where the old windows came out, you may find the Plexus lifted some of
the gelcoatyou can fill and smooth over with a filler or just leave
it as the adhesive will take care of it.

At the time, I was not aware of the VHB tape so I used Sika 295 UV and
the Sika Primer..I can not stress enough the need to include the
Sika Primer and it is more expensive that the Sika 295 UV which I used 2
tubes (not all of it but I needed some of the second tube).  The Sika
295 UV will not bond properly without the Sika Primer.

The new windows will have paper on both sides so you have to put them in
the cabin sides and draw around from the inside so the paper can be cut
away where they fit into the cabin side.  With sand paper, rough up the
new window where they will be mounted.

I taped both the inside and outside of the cabin..the Sika 295 UV is
very dirty stuffyou will need a solvent and lots of rags handy.  I
applied the Sika to both where the windows will be mounted, liberally as
I wanted it to ooze out when I pushed the windows into place and some on
the edge of each window itself.

I resorted to cutting 3 pieces of 2" X 4"'s approx 23" long for each
window to brace it after applying the adhesive..I put the 3 pieces
of wood against the window and braced them against the toerail placing a
10 pound rock on each piece of wood to ensure it stayed in
place.left the braces on for 48 hours to allow sufficient curing
time with the moderate Spring temperature.

If I were to do it again and was assured that the VHB tape would address
the curvature issue with the wooden braces, I would use the VHB tape,
regardless of cost.  While the Sika 295 UV and Sika Primer is effective,
it is more labor intensive with the application and it is messy if you
are not prepared.

Stus-List Re: Replacing cabin windows

2023-02-10 Thread Matt Wolford via CnC-List
When I did mine, the biggest labor issue was that the PO had installed a
combination of screws and bolts/nuts to hold the old plexi lenses in place, the
holes for which were sources of leaks. As a result, I also needed to repair
gel coat (and fill holes) in the recessed areas where the lenses sit. I would
not have considered holding the replacement lenses in place with screws, as
this is what I was getting away from. Instead, I used the 3M double stick tape
method described on the website. The YouTube video on how to install was very
helpful.

As I recall, I used a paint stir stick to support the replacement lens along
the bottom, which in my case was just the right width to center it in the
window recess top to bottom. I centered the lenses side to side visually. I
did the tape “hinge” across the top, flipped the replacement lens up, installed
the 3M tape, and carefully flipped the lens back down into place. Worked like
a charm. The rest of the job (installing the sealant) was a bit messy but
manageable. I used masking tape around the window recesses to get a
professional look. It’s important to use the right sealant (a Dow product as I
recall, not SIKA) because it had a longer cure window than GE silicone. You
don’t want it to “skin” while you’re working. I did mine on a cloudy day,
about 75 degrees, to ensure the boat surface was not too warm. That was about
six years ago, and I haven’t had a leak since.

I replaced the windows on a past 37 XL we owned and we used Select Plastic in
CT. They are known as the hatch relens experts but also do windows.

I got a quote from "Fix Leaky Boats” on replacing windows and frames (fixed /
non-opening) on my 1980 34' two years ago and it was about $2,000 Canadian. I
didn’t proceed but that might give you an idea of pricing. I’ve heard great
things about their products.
