Re: Stus-List Split in keel.
Brien, The keel stub extends roughly 4-6” from the hull down at the aft end. I can’t tell from the picture if you damage is to the glass or the lead portion of the keel. Either way, the suggested methods of sealing it with epoxy will work. Some glass and fairing will make the repair blend into the keel better too. I have pictures of my 35-3 without the keel attached, if you are interested. I recently discovered this split in the trailing edge of my keel (photo provided via google drive link below). It looks as though the split has exposed the lead of the keel. The rest of the keel looks fine. No evidence of any water intrusion of any kind in the keel to stub joint. No C&C smile at all. Has anyone seen anything like this or had to make this repair on their boat. This is my first season with her and I'd rather not get into a super expensive keel repair if I don't have to. My thoughts were inject with epoxy, cover with glass mat, sand, fair, and repaint. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzW7COeyzYvZRTY5VFNtQWRlLUgtUnFianBxUmpOQXYtYThV Brien Sadler 1987 C&C 35-3 Norwich, CT ___ Thanks everyone for supporting this list with your contributions. Re: Stus-List Split in keel.
Looked at your photo and it looks like the split is fairing material, not the real keel. I always follow Dennis' advice, BTW. He's tops. I suggest you sand/grind fairing down to solid stuff and fill with a waterproof material. Fair and repaint. Hi there, when I was looking at a boat in Maine I noticed this on a boat and the broker said it was because an anchor chain wrapped itself around it. As long as it isn't structural, the expxy advise seems the bst. I've also heard of using wire brushes to apply the epoxy to lead. Same concept as the scotch bite pad. Re: Stus-List Split in keel.
I did some cosmetic repair/fairing on the trailing edge of Touche's keel years ago. Your situation is similar. I ground off deteriorated material down to exposed lead then quickly applied epoxy with a ScotchBrite pad. Why? The lead will oxidize quickly. Applying the epoxy with a rough pad by rubbing hard will remove any oxidation while covering the lead with the epoxy to prevent further oxidation. Once I had the lead covered, I epoxied some glass to one side of the trailing edge and let it cure. This formed a backstop for working the other side. I applied epoxy thickened with colloidal silica to the other side and faired it with a plastic spreader. Once it all cured, I sanded and faired with 3M Premium Filler. I used an 18 inch stiff long board sander to square the trailing edge to 1/4 inch width. Bottom paint followed. Not a technically challenging job. Just a bit of planning and patience. Dennis C. Re: Stus-List Split in keel.
Your plan sounds good to me. You might consider a g-flex type of epoxy. You could possibly even forgo the fiberglass tape and see how it goes after a single season. The biggest question in my mind is weather or not water is entering the boat through the crack.
