One of the problems they faced was the see-sawing $CAD. When it was really lurching around vs. the $USD, we would sometimes see two or three different prices for the same item in one month. In the end, however, I think they gave up to some extent and just let it ride as "too much". I have a commercial (Port Supply) account with WM. I find I can buy cheaper from Defender, eBay, among others, than my commercial account. Of course, Port Supply discounts are volume based. If you buy $40-50K a year from them, they're great. Dennis C. On Sat, Nov 15, 2014 at 6:08 PM, Colin Kilgour via CnC-List < cnc-list@cnc-list.com> wrote: > I won't be sad to see West go. I won't be sad to see West go. Their prices were good when they came in, but I find them too expensive. I have one within walking distance of my office, but I'd prefer to go just about anywhere else. I'm guessing most other Canadian boaters are the same Hence they head back home. Our local one (Sidney) certainly started stocking less and less sailing related gear, now the place is full of stand-up paddle boards and fishing kit. We're fortunate to still have a number of independent chandleries in the area so aside from their annual electronics clear-out, it will be no huge loss. One thing to their credit, you always knew when they would be open, and if they said they would be, they were - something the independents don't necessarily do. Cheers Paul. Re: Stus-List West Marine leaves Canada
Hi Steve, For other options, you could try leaving Toronto... :) I wonder about the fate of the Nanaimo West Marine store, serving a population area of 120,000 or so. Especially with the Harbour Chandler a mile from the boats and willing to match Vancouver pricing on everything and Internet pricing on many things. The comment on being "highly seasonal" is a little odd too. I'm just about on my way to putter this afternoon on ship's husbandry tasks. Hi, yeah I know the online places but they don't qualify as "in a pinch". I'm talking about those times you need a tube of caulk _now_ because you're mid project and you just ran out, or hose clamps or whatever. Mail order is great but not timely. And oh boy, the Dock Shoppe .. those guys in there have treated me very badly in the past. It is what it is I guess. Good question. They never even tried in South Western Ontario. - Original Message - From: Bill Coleman via CnC-List To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Sent: Monday, November 10, 2014 1:10 PM Subject: Stus-List West Marine leaves Canada Wonder why? West Marine plans exit from Canadian market -- Marine retailer West Marine will close 10 stores in Canada during the next few years, ending its presence in the country. "We have some fantastic associates up in Canada. This was a very difficult decision for us," West Marine CEO Matthew Hyde told analysts during a quarterly earnings call Oct. 23. "That said, this is all about ensuring that when leases come up that we're making the right determination about where we invest our money." The company has seven leases coming up throughout the coming year, "so we're going to be in Canada for quite some time," Hyde said. But the leases that were coming up "didn't meet our minimum hurdles," he said. Also, Canada faces some additional expenses. "So we will be closing our stores in Canada over the next few years," Hyde said. With the exception of the Toronto store, where the company has the lease termination at the end of this year, the six additional stores will operate "basically through the season," said CFO Thomas Moran. "As you can imagine, Canada is a pretty highly seasonal market. So that's just a callout about next year. But beyond that, the impact on our top-line sales and on in our contribution and profitability is immaterial [in 2015]," Moran said. -- ___ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album Email address: CnC-List@cnc-list.com To change your list preferences, including unsubscribing -- go bottom of page at: http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com ___ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album Email address: CnC-List@cnc-list.com To change your list preferences, including unsubscribing -- go bottom of page at: http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com
