Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch

The cushions on Suhana are all in good shape, but they're the old C
beige/brown stripes.

Those cushions are really well made and mine are in great shape. However,
there was definitely boat funk stunk right into them. We removed all the
covers and washed in the laundry with a bit of bleach then air dried. I
also took the foam home a few at a time and soaked them in a bleach
solution (a few percent, not too strong) in a kids wading pool out in the
driveway. Those foam cushions sure hold a lot of water! They took days or
even weeks to dry but the stink is gone. I like to think that the cushions
are now "reconditioned". Just washing the covers made a big difference.

Getting the buttons back in through the cushions is another project for
another time :)

 Sunbrella
is pretty pricey.  Look at fabrics for patio furniture.
Most are a fraction of the cost of Sunbrella.  Heck, even

My settee alone is 8 cushions - 3 bottom, 3 back and 2 ends. The dinette
is probably 10 with the table top cushions. I don't have the patience to
do 18 cushions, and the Admiral isn't interested.
Looks like I need to shop around. I have some friends in the car
business. I can see if they have people who do their work.

Part of me says get it done over the winter, part of me says wait until
after the Bermuda race.

Thanks for all the help!

I suggest talking about proper upholstery fabric

Russ,

It's what they offered as their standard, and I thought it would be easy to
compare prices from different places that way. I'd love leather, but not
the price!

Dennis,
My cushions came off of Howard's boat when he replaced all of his!

My boat pillows are from Home Depot. Didn't know they sold fabric. Heck,
probably cheaper to buy patio cushions just for the fabric than buying
Sunbrella from a marine outlet!

Many of you are fortunate to have all separate removable cushions, bottoms
and backs. Touche's dinette and settee backs are single rolled and pleated
wraparound units stapled to the cabinetry. I like the look. It would be
very pricey to replace because the workman would almost certainly have to
come to the boat.

Many owners have removed this look and gone with separate cushion backs.

Sunbrella is pretty pricey. Look at fabrics for patio furniture. Most are
a fraction of the cost of Sunbrella. Heck, even Home Depot sells outdoor
fabrics.

Guess I'm lucky, Touche's cushions are in decent shape. However the
pattern is definitely 70's retro. Who knows, in another 40 years it might

Funny you should say that. One of the "joys" of owning a "storied" boat
is, of course, the stories.

The Admiral was at a fundraiser a few years back when the conversation
steered around to interests and then sailing. An older couple asked the
Admiral what boat she sailed on. When she replied Touche', they rolled
their eyes and said they used to cruise to Pensacola on Touche' with the
previous owners. They alluded to a few interesting times "in the old days"
but wouldn't elaborate. Maybe I'll ask the cushions the next time I'm on
the boat. :)

My settee alone is 8 cushions - 3 bottom, 3 back and 2 ends. The dinette is
probably 10 with the table top cushions. I don't have the patience to do 18
cushions, and the Admiral isn't interested.
Looks like I need to shop around. I have some friends in the car business. I
can see if they have people who do their work.

Part of me says get it done over the winter, part of me says wait until after

Thanks for all the help!

They are covered in the red, white, blue plaid design common to C of the
era. I suspect they survived this long because when the boat was raced locally

To make the V berth (which on Calypso consists of hinged plywood covers over

Is this a challenge? Some of the cushions on Calypso are original from 1970.
They are covered in the red, white, blue plaid design common to C of the
era. I suspect they survived this long because when the boat was raced locally
the cushions were in storage. I have no desire to look closely for stains,
especially with a black light.

To make the V berth (which on Calypso consists of hinged plywood covers over
the sail storage lockers) more comfortable when cruising I had thicker cushions
covered with sunbrella made up. I kept the thin, well used V berth cushions
that came with the boat for racing deliveries.

Not sure why anyone would have to come to the boat. All the rolled stuff looks
to be stapled along the edges. Just take it to the shop and restaple the new
stuff yourself.

Many of you are fortunate to have all separate removable cushions, bottoms and
backs. Touche's dinette and settee backs are single rolled and pleated
wraparound units stapled to the cabinetry. I like the look. It would be very
pricey to replace because the workman would almost certainly have to come to
the boat.
Many owners have removed this look and gone with separate cushion backs.

Yup, the red, white and blue plaid is what Touche' has. I found some extra
on the boat and saved it. Came in handy a couple years ago when I had an
upholsterer patch some in on the quarterberth cushion.

Fabric isn't bad but the stitching gives out. Have gotten a couple
cushions re-stitched. Cash speaks loud to small upholstery shops for the
occasional small job. :)

Our V berth cushions were upside down in the broker's advertising and in
real life, which is weird when you finally notice the taper is going the
wrong way. The tops of the cushions were literally a bunch of longitudinal
strings joined by occasional pieces of the (is it the weft or the woof, I
can never remember) crossways. I could only imagine what hard use those
cushions got when the boat was in charter.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay area and I'm having all the cushions re-covered in
Sunbrella material at a local shop for $2,600. I got a list of upholsterers
from a shop that sells foam and after calling around found a place that was
about $2000 less than all the other estimates. The only drawback is I'm waiting
about three months for the fist half of the cushions to be done.

Sailrite is pretty good at providing detailed instructions and $2200 will
provide quite a bit of materials and tools for you to learn with. Once
it's done you will have the knowledge and tools to make any number of other
canvas projects. Imagine the life time of savings. If foreign
destinations are in your future imagine the value of not having to find a
canvas (or even sail) maker. Sunbrella is not difficult to work with.
It's not hard to find and its not terribly expensive. If you were talking
about a priceless museum piece or using Italian leather it would be a
different story.

 Just my 2 cents,

Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch

2015-12-17 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I don’t know about the Annapolis area, but here in Eastern North Carolina that
price would be obscene.

I’ve completely redone the upholstery in my 38 in the past year. Total cost
about $1600 for the following:

2 v berth cushions – new 6” foam and medium brown Ultrasuede, Pfeifertex mesh
on back

Quarter berth cushion – ditto

2 6 ft settee cushions – new 4” foam and medium brown Ultrasuede, both sides
so they are reversible

8 box cushions for settee backs and arms – new 3” foam and nautical pattern
upholstery material and Pfeifertex on the backs

Used some of the leftover 6” foam to make 2 bolsters to lean against when
reading in the v berth – used leftover Ultrasuede

6 throw cushion covers made of fawn colored Ultrasuede – think of a #10
envelope big enough to hold a pillow and with a button to hold the flap closed.
Picked the idea up from a cruiser and use the pillows to store bed linen when
not on the various berths.

A comforter and 2 pillow shams for the v berth in a nautical upholstery cloth
that was originally intended for the seat backs. (I didn’t ask before buying
what I thought was enough material to do the 8 cushions. How was I supposed to
know to allow extra for the pattern match? Sailrite probably has a video on how
to do it correctly. So the upholstery shop suggested making a pie shaped v
berth throw/comforter and not letting the material go to waste.)

As you can tell, the sewing was done by a local shop that does upholstery and
interior decorating. The labor was probably well under half what a boat canvas
shop would charge. Furniture upholsterers don’t seem to care if you supply your
own materials.

Bought the foam, fabric, Pfeifertex mesh, batting, and piping for the edges
from a fabric discount store in New Bern. The stuff was also available on line
from the same company.

Another avenue you might try is to ask around among friends who are liveaboard
cruisers. I have found that a surprising number of them have Sailrite sewing
machines and regularly do upholstery and canvas work to feed the cruising kitty.

Stus-List Cost to recover cushions

2015-12-17 Thread robert via CnC-List

Joel:

I had all the upholstery replaced on my C 32 with a Sunbrella fabric
(V-berth, main salon, quarter berth, seats and backs) for all in taxes,
$1,600. No new foam...not needed.

A company that normally does canvass awnings for businesses did it. Was
the job perfect, no not perfect, but not many people would tell the
difference. Meaning, a few corners on the cushions were not
perfect.meaning not every corner was the same, but every corner was
sewn secure. And the Sunbrella fabric is as good as it gets.with
mine, you can spill a rum and coke or a glass of red wine and take the
cushion and pour the drink back into the glassthe cushion is not
stainedam I sure this is true...been there, done that!

I think there are places where you might get a better price.

Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch

2015-12-17 Thread bobmor99 . via CnC-List
Concur with Jim Watt's experience of 10 year's ago. 13 pieces, all new foam
including additional memory foam in V and quarter berth. Sunbrella with
stripes (a little harder to work with). Lots of zippers and underside mesh.
This was 8-9 years ago. Foam was a big cost. All totalled, ~3K USD. Made
very locally.
As for DIY, life's too short to get good at this.

There is an upholstery shop in West Annapolis we are going to try. I got a
quote of something like $200 per cushion.

All,

Just got a quote to have the cushions in the main salon - U shaped dinette and
straight berth with back cushions- recovered in Sunbrella. Estimate was at
least $2200 depending on fabric/extras. Is that a reasonable price? Is there
any good way to DIY if you don't sew?
