Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch
The cushions on Suhana are all in good shape, but they're the old C beige/brown stripes. <http://sacsmarine.com/wp-content/uploads/545641_0_080620101113_2-500x375.jpg> (not my image) Those cushions are really well made and mine are in great shape. However, there was definitely boat funk stunk right into them. We removed all the covers and washed in the laundry with a bit of bleach then air dried. I also took the foam home a few at a time and soaked them in a bleach solution (a few percent, not too strong) in a kids wading pool out in the driveway. Those foam cushions sure hold a lot of water! They took days or even weeks to dry but the stink is gone. I like to think that the cushions are now "reconditioned". Just washing the covers made a big difference. Getting the buttons back in through the cushions is another project for another time :) Steve Suhana, C 32 Toronto On Sat, Dec 19, 2015 at 3:24 PM, Gary Russell via CnC-List < cnc-list@cnc-list.com> wrote: > I had the cushions in my previous boat (35 Mk II) done in UltraLeather. > It's a little pricey but incredibly durable, comfortable and attractive. Many of you are fortunate to have all separate removable cushions, bottoms and backs. Touche's dinette and settee backs are single rolled and pleated wraparound units stapled to the cabinetry. Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - now if cushions could talk
Funny you should say that. One of the "joys" of owning a "storied" boat is, of course, the stories. The Admiral was at a fundraiser a few years back when the conversation steered around to interests and then sailing. An older couple asked the Admiral what boat she sailed on. When she replied Touche', they rolled their eyes and said they used to cruise to Pensacola on Touche' with the previous owners. They alluded to a few interesting times "in the old days" but wouldn't elaborate. Maybe I'll ask the cushions the next time I'm on the boat. :) Dennis C. Our V berth cushions were upside down in the broker's advertising and in real life, which is weird when you finally notice the taper is going the wrong way. The tops of the cushions were literally a bunch of longitudinal strings joined by occasional pieces of the (is it the weft or the woof, I can never remember) crossways. I could only imagine what hard use those cushions got when the boat was in charter. Sailrite is pretty good at providing detailed instructions and $2200 will provide quite a bit of materials and tools for you to learn with. Once it's done you will have the knowledge and tools to make any number of other canvas projects. Imagine the life time of savings. If foreign destinations are in your future imagine the value of not having to find a canvas (or even sail) maker. Sunbrella is not difficult to work with. It's not hard to find and its not terribly expensive. If you were talking about a priceless museum piece or using Italian leather it would be a different story. no way! I just got the same quote for 3 cushions for the u-shaped seat, 3 cusions for the backs, 1 cushion for the strait settee and 3 cushions for it's back in sunbrella for $850. He'll reuse the foam, add new "fibre" layer. and thats here in Massachusetts. hell, it would be worth the shipping to use my guy. This guy did cushions for our old 22 footer many years ago. He does nice work. He is an upholsterer not a marine upholsterer! Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch
I don’t know about the Annapolis area, but here in Eastern North Carolina that price would be obscene. I’ve completely redone the upholstery in my 38 in the past year. Total cost about $1600 for the following: 2 v berth cushions – new 6” foam and medium brown Ultrasuede, Pfeifertex mesh on back Quarter berth cushion – ditto 2 6 ft settee cushions – new 4” foam and medium brown Ultrasuede, both sides so they are reversible 8 box cushions for settee backs and arms – new 3” foam and nautical pattern upholstery material and Pfeifertex on the backs Used some of the leftover 6” foam to make 2 bolsters to lean against when reading in the v berth – used leftover Ultrasuede 6 throw cushion covers made of fawn colored Ultrasuede – think of a #10 envelope big enough to hold a pillow and with a button to hold the flap closed. Picked the idea up from a cruiser and use the pillows to store bed linen when not on the various berths. A comforter and 2 pillow shams for the v berth in a nautical upholstery cloth that was originally intended for the seat backs. (I didn’t ask before buying what I thought was enough material to do the 8 cushions. How was I supposed to know to allow extra for the pattern match? Sailrite probably has a video on how to do it correctly. So the upholstery shop suggested making a pie shaped v berth throw/comforter and not letting the material go to waste.) As you can tell, the sewing was done by a local shop that does upholstery and interior decorating. The labor was probably well under half what a boat canvas shop would charge. Furniture upholsterers don’t seem to care if you supply your own materials. Bought the foam, fabric, Pfeifertex mesh, batting, and piping for the edges from a fabric discount store in New Bern. The stuff was also available on line from the same company. Another avenue you might try is to ask around among friends who are liveaboard cruisers. I have found that a surprising number of them have Sailrite sewing machines and regularly do upholstery and canvas work to feed the cruising kitty. Sounds expensive, we were just over $3K 10 years ago, but we replaced everything. New 4" foam everywhere with and additional 2" of memory foam in the V-berth, top end furniture grade Ultrasuede covers. I think you could do better, but that's just my Scrooge coming out. Stus-List Cost to recover cushions
Joel: I had all the upholstery replaced on my C 32 with a Sunbrella fabric (V-berth, main salon, quarter berth, seats and backs) for all in taxes, $1,600. No new foam...not needed. A company that normally does canvass awnings for businesses did it. Was the job perfect, no not perfect, but not many people would tell the difference. Meaning, a few corners on the cushions were not perfect.meaning not every corner was the same, but every corner was sewn secure. And the Sunbrella fabric is as good as it gets.with mine, you can spill a rum and coke or a glass of red wine and take the cushion and pour the drink back into the glassthe cushion is not stainedam I sure this is true...been there, done that! I think there are places where you might get a better price. Rob Abbott AZURA C 32 - 84 Halifax, N.S. Re: Stus-List Cost to recover cushions - ouch
Concur with Jim Watt's experience of 10 year's ago. 13 pieces, all new foam including additional memory foam in V and quarter berth. Sunbrella with stripes (a little harder to work with). Lots of zippers and underside mesh. This was 8-9 years ago. Foam was a big cost. All totalled, ~3K USD. Made very locally. As for DIY, life's too short to get good at this. --Bob M Ox 33-1 Jax, FL On Thu, Dec 17, 2015 at 3:13 PM, Jim Watts via CnC-List < cnc-list@cnc-list.com> wrote: > Sounds expensive, we were just over $3K 10 years ago, but we replaced > everything.
