Re: Stus-List Landfall 38 original list price

2018-02-20 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Interesting stuff, eh?

Abstracts of title are cool. Touche' had a mortgage of $62,400 on it in
the early 80's. Not bad for a boat with a list price of ~$19,000 in 1971.
:)

Love old historical documents for the boat. I have IOR rating certificates
for Touche' from the 70's. PHRF certificates from way back.

arrange my trip so I can meet you in Solomons and we can buddy boat to

Ok, dates for the 2018 Mid-Atlantic C Rendezvous are all set. The weekend of
October 26,27,28. Carmel and I will be available for multiple days on either
side of the weekend and will be doing some Bay sailing in local areas -
generally just hanging out if anyone wants to arrive early or stay late. We
have 20 responses who are attending and 10 coming by boat. There is roughly a
50/50 mix of those staying on moorings vs slips. I can say that having been to
Edd Schillay's NE Rendezvous it is great to tour everyone else's boats so I
would encourage all the boaters to plan at least one day to get a slip and then
stay on a mooring for any other nights if desired.

The Annapolis Harbor Master needs all registrations in by March 31 in order to
coordinate getting all the boats together. You can negotiate your arrival and
departure dates, power and water requirements, or mooring ball arrangements
directly with the Harbor Master - Beth. Let her know that you are attending

cancelation policy posted on the registration form so register now even if
there is a chance that you may cancel.

I have been approached regarding a possible sailing race which might include a

ahead. Uber and Lift are available and Carmel and I will probably arrange for
one of our cars to be available for anyone who needs.

The dates for the Annapolis Sailboat show have been released as well as my
work/vacation schedule for 2018. You might remember that I had mapped the
distances which people were willing to drive and boat. The resulting area
which attracted the most people was more or less a zone on the western shore of
the Chesapeake Bay between Annapolis and Solomons.

The dates which I'm looking at are October 1st through the 8th (this
encompasses the sailboat show which is the 4th through the 8th) and October
26th to the 1st. If held during the later dates we can easily hold the
rendezvous in Annapolis since dockage and mooring won't be a problem. If held
during the earlier dates (during the boat show) we could hold the rendezvous at
nearby towns within a 30 minute drive of the boat show. I'm personally leaning
towards the later dates since Annapolis is such a great town to visit and has
such good boating amenities; It would be nice if everyone had a chance to see
it without the craziness of the boat show. If during the boat show is the
preference then I was thinking that maybe Herrington Harbor North or somewhere
in Deal, MD would be nice. For those who want to attend the boat show Deal is
only a 30 minute drive. I'm sure there are marinas elsewhere closer to
Annapolis yet away from the crowds that I'm not aware of. I'm happy to hear
everyones thoughts and suggestions.

Re: Stus-List Geared folding props

2018-02-20 Thread Charles Nelson via CnC-List
I 2nd the Gori 2 blade geared folding prop:

Lowest drag of ANY prop by experiments reported in Yachting a few years ago.

Detailed recommendation of pitch and diameter after boat owner supplied info on
engine, trains ratio and boat displacement.

Cost was comparable to other props with experimentally measured higher drag,
even if only marginally higher.

Geoff at AB Marine very knowledgeable and helpful in prop selection--he is a
New Zealander so don't say he has an English or Australian accent!

Issues in reverse same as other geared, folding props.

Enough forward force to drive my boat at hull speed.

I service it at yearly haul-outs (inspect, clean, lubricate) and, like the
Energizer bunny, it keeps on going and going, etc.

No connection with company but a very satisfied customer.

Ok, I went ahead and ordered an Abstract of Title from the USCG, and it arrived
today.

From what I see, there was Preferred Mortgage taken out in 1981 for
$182,408.40.

It is not totally clear to me. This seems high. Maybe it included extras
and/or assumed interest. Playing around with a mortgage calculator, I see that
a $100k mortgage at 9% interest for 15 years gives a total cost of $182,568.
But in 1981, the home mortgage rates where around 15%. Working backwards from
a total cost of $182k at 15% interest gives a mortgage amount of $73,000.
Assuming that the original owners provided 20-25% down payment would give an
estimated sale price of $91k - $97k. Same ball park as what Ed noted. The
higher price may seem more reasonable. A search on Google shows a listing for
a 1981 LF38 for $89k and a listing of a 1983 for $110k in the Sep 1984 issue of
Yachting magazine.

A few more data points for you Paul,

I have the Factory Invoices for 16 of the C 37+ and XL showing the price
paid by the respective Dealers when they were sold new in 1988 and 1989.
These are priced in US Dollars..

The average Factory (not Retail) selling price to the Dealer of these 16
boats is *US $105,881.00.* Add perhaps 20% for Dealer markup.

I have more invoices for 10 C 37+ and XL sold in Canadian dollars in the
same time period. The average is *$140,000.00 (Can $). Add perhaps 20%
for Dealer markup. *

I also have the Factory Invoices for 9 of the C 37R showing the price
paid by the respective Dealers in 1989 and 1989. These are priced in US
Dollars.

The average Factory (not Retail) selling price to the Dealer of these 9
boat is *US $106,494.36.* Add perhaps 20% for Dealer markup.

I have more invoices for 4 C 37R sold in Canadian dollars in the same
time period. The average is *$140,305.00 (Can $). Add perhaps 20% for
Dealer markup.*

*I have no record of what was actually charged to the purchaser except in
one case where the boat was sold to an owner in Bermuda, directly by the
Factory it appears. He didn't pay much more than a Dealer would have.*

Stus-List Geared folding props

2018-02-20 Thread SEAN CONNER via CnC-List
I had a Martec folding prop on my 34 and upgraded to a flex-o-fold when I
repowered to a 3GM30. Originally intended to go with a 2 blade folding
Flex-o-Fold, but after doing some research and talking with locals owners, I
went with the 3 blade feathering and LOVE IT. Tons of grab in reverse, tons
of torque and oomph in a headwind or sea, and in my local fleet what ever I'm
losing in speed just doesn't make a difference. I use a "shaft shark" on the
prop shaft and have never had any issues with catching debris or seaweed, etc;
The prop seems to open and close smoothly without any issues all season long
here in new england. I do not use any paint or oils.. just burnish it every
season.

another port, etc. If you come up with an idea and want to organize it then go
ahead. Uber and Lift are available and Carmel and I will probably arrange for
one of our cars to be available for anyone who needs.

Ok guys (and gals),

Hello all,

We have a 1994 C 37/40 + where the shower temperature handle to shower head
hose is leaking. Though there is an access port it is not large enough to see
or fix the problem.

Has anyone fixed this sort of problem before?

Thank you,

Joe,

We have considered sailing Honey up to Annapolis (we have made that trip a
couple of time) but this year we simply don't have the time and I hate to
pay a delivery Capt to return the boat to us in Savannah. Also, the yacht's
actual owner (my bride) wants to spend a couple of says in DC to see the
sights, so we agreed to split the difference. I get to meet many of the
folks on the CnC list and she get's to see the Smithsonian as well as visit
with a couple of old friends.

Re: Stus-List 2018 Mid-Atlantic C Rendezvous UPDATE Oct 26, 27, 28

2018-02-20 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Mr. Ken Heaton was kind enough to whip up a website for the rendezvous so
here's the link.

http://c-c-37-40.blogspot.ca/p/2018-mid-atlantic-c-rendezvous.html?m=1

It might be helpful if we move all of the discussions regarding the 2018
Mid-Atlantic C Rendezvous to the website in the comments section. We
could use informal RSVPs, general volunteers w/contact info, and specific
sub-coordinators for things like a race. All of this can be left in the
comments section where it will live for reference purposes. If it the
comments section becomes burdensome we'll figure out a matrix and/or
schedule to help manage.

Thanks!

2018-02-20 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Just one other thing. I've never intended this to be my rendezvous, it is
our get together. As the coordinator, I also never intended to exclude
anyone based on the boat they owned. If anybody is lurking on the list who
doesn't own a C, used to own a C, or is thinking about owning a C,
you're all welcome and as far as I am concerned you are all welcome to
invite/bring whoever you like.
