[cobirds] Prob Glossy Ibis and other birds in lower Arkansas valley

2009-09-01 Thread SeEtta Moss
I birded several locations north of La Junta yesterday including the Ordway
stockyards. I saw a dark ibis feeding alone in ditch near the stockyards
that I believe to be a Glossy in Basic plumage- dark brown iris, very pale
blue lines above and below eye, head neck dark brown with white
streaking. Alderfer and Dunn, in *National Geographic Birding
Essentials, *states:
All adult (and even most juvenile) Glossy Ibis will show a thin powder-blue
line above and below the facial skin but not around the eye. (p.163) I
will get some photos posted by tomorrow on my blog at
http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com

Also in the Ordway area were 1 juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron, 4 Snowy
Egrets and a surprising female Common Merganser. There were few birds at
Lake Henry, just a few white-headed gulls and a few waterfowl. I didn't
have time to check Lake Meredith.

Lake Cheraw had at least 50 Black Terns enjoying the strong gusty winds. I
saw Western and Baird's Sandpipers, a possible White-rumped Sandpiper (need
to check my photos), a few Am Avocets, lots of Wilson's Phalaropes and many
waterfowl. White-caps from winds made it difficult to check some birds.

Lake Holbrook had 2 Snowy Egrets, increasing numbers of American White
Pelicans, a few gulls and little else. The water levels are starting to
come down at area reservoirs so not sure why there weren't more shorebirds.
In short grass prairie I saw an Eastern Kingbird apparently in migration
with several Western Kingbirds. I saw 4 Common Nighthawks working the skies
in late afternoon--it was very cloudy, a condition in which I have seen them
in daylight in the past. I only saw 4-5 Swainson Hawks and none of the
flocks of migrating Swainson's I have seen in past years. I also only saw
two flocks of Lark Buntings.

[cobirds] Ruby-throated Hummingbird

2009-09-01 Thread linda paulsen
Hello All,
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird, adult male, is still here.  If anyone is
in the area, the best viewing would be from the porch on the south side of the
house.  There is a table and some chairs there so sit down and enjoy!

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding

2009-09-01 Thread brian_gibb...@juno.com

Hi Cobirders

Today was less birdy overall but we banded 32 birds! This tally was helped by
a flock of American Robins that came through with 12 getting banded. We also
banded 1 Downy Woodpecker, 2 Western Wood-Pewees, 2 Willow Flycatchers, 2
Hammond's Flycatchers, 1 House Wren, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 1 Swainson's Thrush, 2
Gray Catbirds, recap Brown Thrasher, 5 Wilson's Warblers, 1 Lark Sparrow, 1
Blue Grosbeak and 1 Bullock's Oriole.

WARNING for the first time in many years banding at the Holmes Grove (but just
my second in fall) we found a decent-sized Prairie Rattlesnake very near one of
the trails we course through many times a day.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Long-tailed Jaeger, Whitewater, Mesa County

2009-09-01 Thread Dean and Mona Hill

Dave Leatherman has just called (September 1, 2009; 5 pm) with the
news of an adult, basic plumage Long-tailed Jaeger on the gravel
ponds on CO 141, about a mile (3/4 mile?) from the junction with US
50. There are two gravel ponds in the area on either side of the
road. The bird flew across the road from the east pond to the west
pond and was last seen on the south shore of the latter pond. I
wanted to get the word out as quickly as possible.

[cobirds] Available Banding Equipment

2009-09-01 Thread Patrick Gould

Hi

I can no longer band birds because of my health -

I would like to donate all of my nets (many all sizes including demo nets) and
banding equipment (pretty much everything a bander needs including pliers for
steel bands) to, preferably, a university or college ornithology (or zoology)
department that has ornithology grad students (can be used for bat studies
also). Failing this I could give them to a young ornithologist actively
studying birds (and publishing).

It would be nice if this equipment is used for Colorado Bird Studies.

It might take me a while to pack and ship the stuff or if your in the Florence
(Fremont CO) area you could stop by and pick them up.

The individual who gets the stuff must have valid state and federal banding
permits!

[cobirds] Boyd Lake, Larimer County

2009-09-01 Thread WARNER K REESER

We visited Boyd Lake State Park on Sept. l and did not see much migration
activitie there so far. however today gave a lttle increase in some areas -
Red-winged Blackbirds and Grackles are forming in large flocks. I showed one
of the Park staff an Osprey flying - she said she had seen two there earlier.
Some Pelicans showing signs of migrational intents - one Vesper Sparrow but no
Sparrow groups observed by us. Almost no waterfowl - a Lonesome George Mallard
here and there, 2 Pied Bill Grebes and a few Killdeer, probably in migration.
No big rafts of ducks on the reservoir which we expected to see. We keep
watching so we might see big numbers anytime now.
