[cobirds] Lewis's Woodpecker, Black Phoebe and Chihuahuan Raven in Canon City area 5/30
Yesterday I found a Lewis's Woodpecker on the east side of the Canon City Riverwalk (1/2 mile east of the MacKenzie Ave parking lot at Fourmile Creek marker) investigating a large tree stump. This species used to nest in several large cottonwoods at this location until Starlings chased them away. This is the first Lewis's I have seen here in some years and hope they will be able to re-nest at this location. I also found a lone Black Phoebe, presumably a non-breeder, just over a 1/4 mile west of the MacKenzie Ave parking lot in the location where there is a large grate over the Fremont Ditch (where people can cross over to access the river). This has historically been a location favored by Black Phoebes. I can remember when Dave Pantle and I led the CFO field trip to Canon City when the CFO Convention was held in Pueblo around 2004 (just my memory?)--that is the location where a number of Colorado birders were able to get their life or state Black Phoebe. If anyone is coming down this way, this is a good place to check if they want to see a Black Phoebe as it provides close views (the others in public areas are in more distant locations). I also got a Willow Flycatcher near the MacKenzie parking lot of the Canon City Riverwalk confirmed by several soft 'whit' calls. I got a pretty good photo of this bird that I have uploaded to my BirdsAndNaturehttp://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.comblog. I also saw Chihuahuan Raven (thick bill, long 2/3 rd of bill nasal bristles, throat only a little shaggy) a few miles south of Canon City (on CR79 a few hundred yards east of CR11A) getting harassed by Prairie Falcon then by a Northern Mockingbird that was likely nesting nearby. Hello all, I spent a couple of hours today at very birdy Dowdy Draw and located a nesting pair of blue-gray gnatcatchers toward the end of the southbound trail, at the foot of the switchback. [cobirds] The Western Gull has moved from the sandspit at Chatfield! Quo vadis?
I just got a call from Larry Modesitt who has arrived at the Marina sandspit at Chatfield and sees no birders, no gull. Many of us saw it half way between the parking lot and the tip of the sandspit, picking at a dead carp, around 1:00 PM and after. Peter Gent told me that it was there when he left. IF ANYONE saw where the bird moved to, please call me at 303 204-0828 and post to Cobirds, so guidance can be given to the many birders who will doubtless be arriving after work. I know that some West Slope birders are arriving in the AM. If I learn anything about the latest location of the bird, I will post promptly. Obvious places to check are the body of the lake and the South Platte or Plum Creek deltas. [cobirds] Alder Flycatcher refound; CU East Campus, Boulder, BOULDER CO.
At 14:45 I relocated the ALDER FLYCATCHER, previously seen last Sunday, along the Skunk Creek Greenway path on the CU East Campus. This area is between Colorado Ave and Arapahoe Ave. The bird was foraging in dense bushes and cottonwood on Skunk Creek immediately east of the SyBase building which is north off Discovery Drive. The spot on the bike-path is where the path crosses a ditch and has very low sandstone walls on either side. The bird is a dramatically different looking empid with olive back, yellow belly, yellow lower mandible, strong wingbars, and thin white eye-ring. There are many Western Wood-Peewees in the same area. Alex Brown, Boulder -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Late Post, Yuma Washington county
Hi all, Deb Carstensen and I decided to go to Bonny State Park on May 30th. [Yuma County]. To continue with the larger than normal amount of sightings for Red-headed Woodpeckers[at least along the front range], I had never, ever seen so many Red-headed Woodpeckers at Bonny before. We got to see 2, males competing for a f. with copulation between 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers finally. These Woodpeckers were litterally everywhere in the park. There were many Eastern Phoebes throughout the park also. Another highlight was seeing a pair mate. I saw several Orchard Orioles, along with Bullock's chattering in the trees. Like the Kingery's we saw many Western Wood- Pewees. Eastern Bluebirds, Warbling Vireos, too many Western Kingbirds and 2 Rattle Snakes were sighted. The highlight was seeing one Bell's Vireo, and hearing 2 separate ones. The winds were outrageous and most birds were hunkered down in the grass or shrubs. Hale Ponds were the highest I've ever seen them. We saw the resident species but I know we did not see alot of birds because of the wind. Continuing east on highway 36, about 20 miles east of Last Chance was a pond on the north side of 36. One Black Tern and 7, Wilson Phalarope were at this pond/pothole.[Washington cty]. At Last Chance I saw 3 f. American Redstart. Only 1, Swainson Thrush was seen.[Washington cty] On 5/29, we both saw 1, ad. m. American Redstart, at Brush State Wildlife Area, just north of the town of Brush,[Morgan County] happy birding!!
